This year's Oscars thread

Her body looks great but not her face, and I don’t think it’s age. I know we all age, ha.

@“Youdon’tsay” Marriage Story was my favorite of the few I saw. Ford v Ferrari was very good and car racing is a zero interest sport for me (loved Rush 7ish years ago too?!). Many fans of Joker, couldn’t wait for the movie to end, Irishman took us parts of 3 nights. I am Brad’s age, saw some of his movies 5plus times and Once/Hollywood we also found long/boring. Will wait for Parasite on DVD (hope I don’t hear secrets about the movie).

Maybe I liked Marriage Story so much since I’ve really enjoyed Adam Driver since Girls, This is Where I Leave You, Logan Lucky, Blackkkclansman. He was even in another Noah Baumbach movie While We’re Young. Scarlett and Laura, I enjoyed these actors even during the tough/sad scenes.

Me, too! I’m cracking up!! I love the Oscar talk shifted to plastic surgery, facial lines and wigs!!

Dustin Hoffman is 82??? So is Jane Fonda! I would love to be like her when I am 82 - standing tall (I’m 5’ 1", still…) with straight back. Gee she is gorgeous!!

By the way, can someone tell me why Tom Hanks was nominated for “supporting actor”? I thought he was the leading character in the movie.

@HiToWaMom I didn’t see A Beautiful Day, I did read that Matthew Rhys was the lead actor? Somehow, I don’t remember ever seeing Mr. Rogers as a kid. I’m one of four and we are all a year apart, ages 50 years plus! I’ll have to look what years the TV Show ran.
I am amused by the hair comments. Honestly, I said when I saw Brad and Al Pacino, why didn’t they get hair cuts?

Basically that is how Sony marketed the 2 to voters. The studio campaigns with their “For Your Consideration” ads targeted to the voters. In some instances, the actor will express their desire to the studio for Supporting vs Leading (cf Viola Davis who won a Supporting Actress Oscar for Fences in a role the was clearly, IMO, Leading (but which she would not have won in the Best Actress category). I’m sure that Tom gave his blessing to Sony to market him as “Best Supporting” although he does have top billing.

Ooooh, I remember that! I don’t know if it was Viola Davis or not but I do remember an actor or actress being in the supporting category because there is no chance for him/her to win in the leading role category.

But this is Tom Hanks of all people!! He is becoming like a male version of Meryl Streep.

Where was Meryl Streep this year by the way? If Judy Dench could win the best supporting actress by mere 8-minute appearance in the movie as Elizabeth I, Meryl should be nominated for her role in Little Women!

If she’d been nominated for that performance, though, another deserving actress would have been denied a nomination. I love Meryl Streep! but was relieved she didn’t get nominated for Aunt March. We can all be sure there are more nominations in her future.

I would like to see 10 actors nominated in each category, anyway.

I generally think Streep is vastly overrated- I can’t think of a single role I liked her in or “lost” her in, so I’m perfectly happy she wasn’t nominated.

Sophie’s Choice?

@milgymfam 80s movie Silkwood and Heartburn. And 90s The Bridges Of Madison County, One True Thing with Renée Z as her daughter. The 2000s The Devil Wears Prada? I have to be pulled away when that’s on!

Sophie’s Choice on another level, up alone until 2 am as a teen.

Postcards from the Edge is one of my favorite early Meryl Streep films. Screenplay by Carrie Fisher from her novel (based in part on her relationship with Debbie Reynolds), great supporting performances from Shirley MacLaine and Gene Hackman, a very cute Dennis Quaid … plus Meryl can really sing country. I think it was her 7th nomination for Best Actress, but it’s easy to lose count.

Where is someone hanging out that men at the age of 56 look better than Brad Pitt? Obviously, he has aged, but I’d say time had been very very kind.

@frazzled1 ahhh Dennis Quaid in his prime…

I’ve seen a few of those and liked none of them. Different strokes. She’s just not my cup of tea. At all.

Yup, that was Viola. That was the season that she campaigned so heavily that the joke was that she would attend the opening of a car door.

In general, 2 actors in the same category will cancel each other out in the voting. I’m guessing that Tom, with 2 Oscars already and with a Mr Nice Guy reputation, opted to step aside. Of course, Matthew Rhys ended up not getting nominated anyway, and the odds makers had Tom in 5th place in the Supporting Category anyway.

I thought Billie Eilish’s rendition of Yesterday was hauntingly beautiful.
I was disappointed that Luke Perry was not included in the Memoriam.

Meryl in Bridges of Madison County - sigh. For whatever reason, I really love that movie, and her performance.

Ignoring or forgetting Luke perry—just wow

On the subject of Brad Pitt’s and Al Pacino’s hair, I always assume that actors have their hair a certain length or style because of a role they’re currently filming. I know that Al Pacino is in a new series on Amazon called Hunters. I’m not sure about Brad Pitt, but I think he looks pretty good no matter what length his hair is.

Many were forgotten ( time issue?) : Tim Conway, Carol Linley, Rene Auberjonois, Peggy Lipton, John Singleton, Peter Mayhew, Doris Day, Valerie Harper, Ken Kerchaval…(although I may have missed some of these and some may not be “movie” actors?).
Personally, In Memoriam went way too fast last night, so hard to read, reflect much.

The Oscars does have a full list of those lost this past year…I’m sure the show couldn’t show all 164+ (the last few pages have multiple people bullet pointed) on the list…
