Doh. All we’re doing is speculating, including me. This really goes without saying.

I do think that if what one of the alleged mistresses says is true…that she was in an affair with Tiger from 2004-2006…that the marriage, at least for Tiger, was nothing more than an image enhancer for the sponsors.

However, who knows? They may have had an “open marriage” agreement from the beginning. We really don’t know–we can only speculate from what we observe.

Some people post their “speculations” almost as though they are facts…

“Wasn’t Wilt Chamberlain bragging that his numbered over a thousand?”

Wilt said he had over 20,000 (twenty thousand) women.

Tiger: greatest athlete in the world, billionaire.
Elin: former nanny.
She should get down on her knees and thank God every night that he even looked at her in the first place. What sort of ego makes a women of her (or any) accomplishment think that she should be the be-all and end-all of a superstar’s sex life?

Oh Schmaltz, I can’t believe you just said that. Of course, knowing you, it’s probably a joke.

On the other hand, I think a strong ego (this is a good thing) makes people of any accomplishment, male or female, feel they are entitled to the love of their spouse. If a person (I’m looking at you Tiger) does not yet feel capable of loving another person, that person should not get married.

Tiger could have stayed single and had as many hookups as he wanted with no repercussions. He chose to get married, so he chose to give up the hookups. Except that he didn’t. His bad.

Wow, Schmalz. I feel sorry for any of your girlfriends… The worth of a human being is not measured by their money or athletic ability. Nor is the fact that marriage vows pretty much always include the promise by both parties to be the other’s only sexual partner. Just because Tiger is a rich jock does not give him a pass to violate that promise. If he didn’t want to make and keep that promise, he should not have married her. Tiger has enough money that he could have gotten a girlfriend pregnant and gotten shared custody of any kids. He probably could have found women who would have agreed to do that. He did not HAVE to marry Elin. It is pretty clear from his statement to the press and her reactions that they did not have an open marriage arrangement, which would give him some excuse.

Just saw yesterday’s news, the latest (4th) woman to talk gives a timeline that extends back to around the time they were married. He is just a spoiled, arrogant, all-about-himself loser. I used to be a fan, but I have zero respect and no interest in seeing him ever win another tournament. This is, by the way, a bad event for the game of golf, because Tiger was a huge draw. I think many fans will by turned off by the breadth and depth of his bad behavior.

Men have such a tendency to exaggerate measurements, schmaltz.

It would seem that way–I agree. But, it’s possible that there was an agreement that would allow it as long as it didn’t result in Elin’s public humiliation, and that is the part that may have been violated.

I find it sort of difficult to believe that she had no earthly idea about what was going on during entirety of her marriage and probably her “courtship” too. I think you’d have to be pretty blind…

It’s all part and parcel of her status as “wife.”

Exactly. No one is demanding monogamy of all sports stars, only of those who take marriage vows. There’s a simple way to be promiscuous and get away with it, if that’s your thing: Don’t get married.

Some sure sound cynical and so very sure of themselves here. I agree that we cannot know what others do or do not know in their relationships. Fortunately I have never had reason to question my spouse, but have a friends whose bfs of many yrs were unfaithful. Took a long time and a lot to “catch” them as they had a long distance relationship for part of the time, and this was before cellphones and email and the ability to look at such things. One friend suspected but the other did not, and was very hurt when she discovered the signs in her bf’s apt.

From the sound of some of the messages that Tiger left his gfs, sounds like his wife, and perhaps even his gfs, suspected his infidelity. Perhaps not to the degree that it was going on. But no one wants that to be the case, and some spouses are such good liars, and have ppl who are willing to cover their lies for them, that perhaps Elin questioned Tiger’s fidelity but didn’t have the evidence or believed his promises and those of his “handlers” that either it didnt happen or did but would never happen again. That doesn’t make her a fool or an opportunist. It makes her a young woman who wants (or wanted) her marriage to work, and perhaps believes that husbands will be, or should be faithful to their vows. Wow, what a concept.

I agree with others that part of what makes this story such a huge media event is the fact that Tiger had such a squeaky clean image.

Did Tiger portray that image? Was it a concept sold by his Dad? Or was it all media driven?
Did we all just assume he was a total package (intelligent Stanford student, gifted athlete, principled human, perfect family man) simply because he was such a brilliant golfer?

Just curious how he cultivated such a pristine image which now appears to be incongruous with the truth.

nr…

that’s a good point. how did the image come to be?

is it because he is so seemingly perfect on the golf course?

Yeah. No reason to be cynical, folks!

I have the feeling that Elin didn’t know for sure but perhaps suspected it after a while. She’s 29 now and they were married in 2004. He proposed in 2003. So she would have been around 23 when he proposed. I can certainly see a young adult at that age not seeing the signs. If she know about this (as fact) I think that she would be concerned about conceiving with Tiger as there’s the potential for disease that she could get that could be passed on to their children. There is the embarrassment part and that’s not a little thing but the disease part would be something to get very mad about.

So, in summary, I do think that she didn’t know for sure.

BCEagle:

I would agree with that. It sounds like Tiger Woods went to great lengths, even involving body guards and good friends, to cover for his frequent and numerous extramarital activities.

I do think that when Tiger said his vows, he knew he had no intention of keeping them, though Elin may have gone into the marriage with different feelings.

It looks like mistresses 4, 5, and 6 have emerged, and I’ve seen reports listing as many as 9. Wow.

Sounds like he was a really adept liar who made declations of “love” to many women, including his wife. Narcissist much?

Okay, I confess. I was having a torrid affair with Tiger. It was at his tournament in DC. I was standing along the ropes of the thirteenth hole and that’s when it happened. I feel so used. I am glad I saved the banana peel he threw my way. I am going to see if TMZ is interested in my evidence.

"Lawton, a 33-year-old manager of an Orlando Perkins restaurant, told the British tabloid, News of the World, that she and Woods had year-long sexual relationship that began in May 2006 and occurred when Wood’s wife, Elin Nordegren, was pregnant. She also claims they had sex in Woods’ Isleworth, Florida family home.

“Tiger just used me as his sex toy. I thought I meant something to him, but all he cared about was lust. He is a selfish, heartless man,” Lawton told the tabloid"

It amazes me how so many women are willing to let the world know that they had sex with a married man during his wife’s pregnancy. But, I guess there are people who’ll do anything for money – Tiger’s and whatever tabloids are buying their stories.

What surprises me now is that no woman has come forth saying she has had his baby. Seems that would have been a sure fire way for the golddiggers to have guaranteed years of economic support from him.
