Hey! My parents don’t speak English, so I’m writing the parent statements with them.
Do you have any tips?
Do your parents have an inability to write in their native language? They should be doing that. And then perhaps you might be aiding them as translator. You should not be writing the parent statement.
They wrote in portuguese but the type of writing used in American schools is very different than the one used in my country’s schools, so while I’m translating, I want to make sure I’m using the write “form”/organization. They aren’t sure of how a parent statement should look too, that’s why I’m asking…
FWIW, I don’t think students writing parent statement in such circumstances is that unusual. IMO, this is such a small part of the application - mostly intended to give parents an opportunity to share their thoughts on their child with the school. Parents aren’t being judged on their writing ability, so don’t sweat it.
In my opinion (fyi) the parents should be ideally saying something that’s not anywhere else in the application. It’s a place for them to talk about intangibles, e.g. what a helpful child, or kind child you are. And how they write is not important.
this! The schools will know they are from another country and not used the US system. They aren’t going to be judging grammar or style.
