Thank you for the notes on tights vs leggings. I didn’t think the leggings would work with that dress but I couldn’t figure out why. That concept of top length is helpful!!

If you wear it with boots, no one will necessarily know whether you’ve chosen tights or leggings. I have no problem with the look of the longer dresses with leggings. It really depends on who is wearing it, how it looks on her, and how she feels in it, in my opinion.

I don’t think there are rights and wrongs here with fashion so much as we have differing tastes.

abasket…the merino wool dress is nice. Before I even saw Gourmetmom’s post, I was going to also say that I think a dress of that length warrants some heel, not flats, or else tall boots. I also think dresses of that length are better with tights. I think leggings look best with shorter dresses/tunics.

I’m not sure what momofthreeboys thought was unreal about the Starbucks woman’s outfit, and people are mentioning the flats with studs (not my thing but may have been tasteful) but maybe she was referring to the leggings with zippers at the ankle? If so, I have leggings, ponte knit pants, cotton pants and cords that are are narrow at the ankle that have a zipper (though the zipper is on the ankle/side and not in the back). Just sayin’!

abasket,

A casual tunic length dress to be worn with leggings that I bought last year, is being shown in this year’s catalogue again that I received today from ACACIA. I own the brown fall print version and have dark brown leggings. I thought you might like this, though it is quite casual…(I’ve mostly worn it at home)

While I shared the following one the other day on this thread from the Sundance Catalogue, Acacia is also selling it:

This one I’m considering is knee length and so I am thinking it would be nice with black tights…might be good for your office:

I bought this knee length dress last year in the cranberry color, and it seems to be on sale now! It would be good for your office, I think, with tights…

I noticed zip-ankle leggings in a recent J.Jill catalog. Not exactly dressing on the edge!

OK, you guys have convinced me. I bought the CK leggings in charcoal from Costco. They are VERY comfortable and I think I may wear them on the airplane, as I have four flights coming up over the next few weeks. H thinks I look nice in it, as long as I wear it with one of the many long tops I already own. He and I think it will be fun for D & I to go shopping for another top or two to go with it.

The leggings are nice–don’t bag but don’t cling. Like that it contains a lot of cotton and is not sheer at all. I don’t believe I’ve ever had a pair of leggings before. I’ve only worn tights when I was taking aerobics decades ago and hate the feel of wearing nylon. HI is way too hot for synthetics.

I just thought it amusing that the Starbucks woman outfit hit the trifecta…studded flats, asymetrical stop AND leggings with zippers. Here’s the J Jill ones. I, too, had noticed the zipper last week.

Probably totally appropriate for running around town or an airline flight, etc. etc.

I have these, though paid a bit more than the ebay price!!
There are several inexpensive studded flats here http://www.qvc.com/Kathy-Van-Zeeland-Shoes-&-Handbags.category.9945.html?refine=1431718+4294966607

The JJill leggings - at least in that picture - look really cute!

Haha - Mom of three- maybe that’s why she looked so “put together” - she was like a magazine ad for a dept store!!!

Thanks for all the fun talk everyone - it’s what I love about CC. It’s been a rare 80 degree days week here in Ohio for October so I’m still enjoying wearing dresses to work WITHOUT any leg covering - but who knows, in 2 weeks (or less!) I might be putting those leggings to work!!!

Totally agree with Gourmet Mom on leggings vs tights. If it doesn’t look like a tunic/big shirt wear tights!

…wear tights or leggings masked as tights (e.g., with tall boots). Agree.

I don’t understand why that makes a big difference, but I also have close to a foot more leg than a lot of women so I wouldn’t necessarily always make the same choice.

I am slim, a size 2 or 4, after finally losing some weight that I carried for a number of years. I won’t wear legging with a mini dress/skirt/tunic type top. I prefer the skinny jeans or pants, something that defintiely are more pants than tights for any to that is short. I don’t like the look for myself and for that matter, most anyone who looks like she is wearing tights and regular shirt.

Isn’t it great that we live in a day/age in which we get to make the decision (re: tights, maxi dresses–whatever!) and still be acceptable, regardless??. No more fashion czars dictating skirt lengths, for example!

I was told by a young woman at Ross today that what I boughtvand thought were leggings are actually jeggings. I guess I have more flexibility in wearing them? I went back and bought a black pair to go with my grey pair. I wear it with a fitted long tshirt that covers my butt as well as a silver belt that H bought me a while back. It looks nice together.

Don’t have flowing or draping tunic tops, but do have some sweaters and tshirts that cover my butt that H and I candidly think look good with the jeggings/leggings I got from Costco My 30+ niece also bought them and plans to use them for flying. She says they’re too casual for her to wear to work.

I was poking around online tonight and found this site. Very pretty things.

These are the ones I just bought in black and also charcoal at Costco. It was $17.79 each, including tax.

Wear them in the best of health, HImom. :)

EPTR, I have occasionally ordered from Soft Surroundings.

Hey ladies who are considering any of those Soma shorter dresses to wear with leggings that were mentioned up thread…
I just got an email from Soma that for TODAY ONLY, they are offering 50% off your higher priced item if you buy two or more items. Use code 12962.

It so happens, I do plan on ordering at least 2 of the dresses discussed here and already thought these were priced pretty low. I was going to place the order last night but got too tired and so was going to order them today and voila, now they have this discount. Hope the rest of my day is this positive!

Late to this thread, and not a fashion maven, I have a question about leggings: According to this thread, when you wear leggings (without boots) you are supposed to be showing some ankle skin. So, how does that work for people with short legs and long torsos? Seems like it might be an unflattering look that makes the short legs look even shorter? And ankle boots over the leggings would cover the skin, but ankle boots also make short legs look even shorter.

Looks like a cute and comfortable fashion trend, and one that would work for people who, like me, get around by bike, but I’m afraid it wouldn’t be flattering on me.
