lol, I am struggling to find someone to attend a concert of Stevie Wonder music with me at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
Is Stevie Wonder playing or is it a cover band?
Alas, not the man himself.
From BAM website:
Between 1972 and 1976, Stevie Wonder released five albums that changed the course of popular music: Music of My Mind , Talking Book , Innervisions , Fulfillingness’ First Finale , and Songs in the Key of Life . Affirming the unparalleled genius expressed in this unprecedented sequence, PoetWarrior Productions and the Black Rock Coalition present Stevie: A Life in the Key of Songs , a three-night celebration.
The BRC Orchestra, an all-star collective of premier musicians and world-renowned guests, performs those five masterpiece albums in their entirety over the course of three nights. Directed by PoetWarrior founder/CEO and BRC Director of Operations Darrell M. McNeil, with Willie Mae Rock Camp executive director LaFrae Sci, the Orchestra will mix faithful renditions of Wonder’s original songs with bold, contemporary re-imaginings. The set list also includes songs Wonder composed for other artists during the same period, underscoring his versatility and unstoppable imagination.
Among the major artists joining the BRC players onstage are keyboardist, composer, and bandleader Ray Angry; Living Colour vocalist Corey Glover and guitarist Vernon Reid; singer-songwriter and guitarist David Ryan Harris; The Family Stand founders Sandra St. Victor and Peter Lord; harmonica virtuoso Grégoire Maret; and jazz guitar great Mark Whitfield.
We saw Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass last night. He’s 91! So much energy! The concert was more than an hour and a half, and he told stories, too. The first thing he said, as he looked around the auditorium, was, “I love playing in places that are older than I am!” They also showed photos and videos from when he was in his prime. DH and I agreed that it was probably the best concert we’ve ever been to - so much energy and talent. Who would have guessed?? But yes, almost everyone in the audience was old!
Our friends were given tickets to a concert of Patty Griffin with opening act Ricki Lee Jones, who was fresh, jazzy, interesting and really sexy when I was a grad student. They invited us to join (they’d never heard of either of them). Well, although Patty Griffin (who is 61) was excellent and her band even better, someone should have told Ricki Lee Jones (who is 71) it was time to retire. Her show was embarassingy bad.
Yesterday, the dental hygienist said, “You are in good shape for someone your age.” I had spinal fusion surgery in September and my posture is very erect I’m riding my indoor Zwift bike including two HIIT sessions each week. ShawWife and I also do two core sessions with a trainer each week which includesseven minutes of planks and 40 pushups (although I was doing that before the surgery). And, I have lost 25 pounds since the surgery. I do have low iron that the docs and I are trying to figure out, which limits my stamina at high power, but she doesn’t know that. I thought it was interesting to qualify it with “for someone your age.”
Another thing that makes me feel old are the organ recitals we participate in when we meet people for dinner.
OMG, we saw him as well at the Atlanta Symphony Hall - he was FANTASTIC! Yes, 91 and I forgot how awesomely good looking he was as they rolled those slides and videos of his youthful playing while performing. Funny, I said, obviously a little too loudly to my husband “I wonder how many middle school band teachers are here tonight” and 2 gentlemen in front of us turned around and “we are”!
My parents had a couple of Herb Alpert albums in their hi-fi console, you know, the one that took up a whole wall. I’m sure you all remember this:
Actually back in style today - love the consoles!
I’m waiting for shoulder pads to come back into style. So people will stop with the side eye.
My parents had that same console. Several years ago my husband revamped/revitalized it. It now works. IMO there is nothing that compares to an album played on an analog system. Digitized music is simply not the same. Playing some of the old albums brings back so many wonderful memories. Oh, an in case of massive failure of everything digital…this thing has working AM/FM radio!
Ya, I just one.
Just saw this thread and haven’t read it but just turned 65. Sold our practice but still lecturing. Anyway. I guess this makes me old but kinda makes me feel old.
I get 18,000-23,000 steps a day in usually. Most but not every day but that includes a few hours of pickle ball 2-3 x a week. I play against 30 y/os and people in my age group but ya. Pickle ball (love it). But I have recently seen my ortho. Yes have an ortho for a lateral knee meniscus tear. Then a few week’s later a hand surgeon for bone on bone thumb base arthritis of both hands so medro dose pak (steroids) for 6 day’s. Worked great. Now I woke up after working out a few days ago and added weight to my lower extremity workout with flexion /extention and my left calf was swelling and painful but not hot. I have had 2 clots 14 year’s ago. Tested negative for a clot so a pulled calf muscle. But I do take short acting heparin for flight 4 hours or longer.
Going to work out now just upper body. Gotta lose weight and like to keep moving and grooving.
So as I ask the committee here…….
. Does this qualify me as old ![]()
…..?
Not to this 69 year old!
Today in my gym class, I mentioned that I’d gone to see Herb Albert perform, and the young trainer had never heard of him.
I don’t know who that is either and I’m not that much younger than you ; )
I guess that’s the best answer I can get ![]()
Oh, my! You’ve missed out! I’m sure you would recognize his music. His bands played with such amazing precision, but they had fun, too. ![]()
“Alpert is the only musician to have reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 as both a vocalist (“This Guy’s in Love with You”, 1968) and an instrumentalist (“Rise”, 1979).”
“Taste of Honey” is one of my favorites:
His music is great. No question. She’s so “young “![]()

You don’t have to be old to feel old. Forty years ago we had a summer intern at the government office where I worked. In some conversation I mentioned the Beatles. “Oh, we studied them in music theory class,” she replied.
As a trade off for knowing Herb Alpert, I know of about 10% of current Grammy nominees.
I no longer know the music of the Super Bowl. Or the Grammys.
Feels old not to follow current music trends
