top 15 most prestigious universities

…and came across the definition of “Prestigious” as “-of a household name”.
If that’s true, than I disagree with the first handful of lists I read.

I live in a town of about 40,000 in central Ohio, and I’ve never heard of Rice or Vanderbilt or Emory until this past month (and I still don’t see what’s great about any of them), and I am positive that none of the people I talk to regularly even know of those institutions. I’d have to say the same about Northwestern, and I only know of John Hopskins based off an obscure reference in House, as that’s where Hugh Laury’s character went.

So if that’s a list of “Presitge”, than this would be the top 10 for the region I’m located:

Harvard
Yale
Princeton
Stanford
Columbia
UC - Berkeley
Dartmouth
(And here’s where the list changes radically…)
Ohio State University - Columbus
Miami University at Oxford
Case Western Reserve

so I don’t really agree with “household name” being the proper definition of prestige. I’ve only read the first 3 or 4 pages, so this point may have already been argued. But in all honestly, I know of very few people in my town familiar with Berkeley, let alone the rest of the Ivy League (that’s not HPYC).

^Really? No MIT?

And prestige is generally “-of a household name for its renown academics”. Frankly, prestige is mostly worthless; sure, your average Joe might be more impressed by “I went to Harvard” rather than “I went to UPenn,” but anybody who does well at either school will face the same grad school opportunities and the same job opportunities.

For me personally, and pretty much the order of the first schools I’ve heard is:

Harvard

MIT

Oxford

Cambridge

Stanford

Yale

Princeton

everything else is about second tier and not very prestigious. What I meant by that is that they’re unbelieveably close, and only recognized by specific people/places.

^^^ CalTech?

Internationally,

1.Harvard
2.Stanford
3.Princeton
4.Yale
5.MIT
6.Cambridge
7.Oxford
8.Caltech
9.Upenn(because of Wharton)
10.London School of Economics
11.Columbia
12.Brown
13.Cornell
14.U of Chicago
15.Dartmouth

since i’m in tech, I’ll just rank my top 5 for engineering/science prestige as well,

1.MIT
2.Caltech
3.Stanford
4.Berkeley
5.Cambridge

i’m from caltech so i’m a little biased toward it, but i just wanna point out even though it indeed has a very narrow focus on science and engineering. For every 1500 students graduated there, there’s 1 nobel prize winner…i think they should really advertise this fact to bolster its prestige.

Caltech is like the Juillard, Cooper Union, or RISD of the science and engineering world. Small, tiny, prestigious, uber selective… Good at one area lol.

Ya cal-tech isn’t really well known. We’re talking about whether it’s a “house-hold name”, right? I’m not saying cal-tech isn’t great, but it’s just… too small I guess.

No. Prestige =/= name recognition

um how does NYU fair with u guys?

NYU is not Top 15, maybe Top 30

thank you!

In no particular order:

Harvard

MIT

Yale

Columbia

Princeton

Brown

UNC

Northwestern

Stanford

USC

Cornell

NYU

GA Tech

Boston U

Rutgers

then why are they numbered? o.o

and I highly disagree with that list.

Haha, is post 1712 still in regards to the OP?

UNC is good but by no means top 15.
Same with Northwestern.
USC, maybe in 10 years.
Cornell, eh, maybe.
NYU noo way.
GA Tech, not familiar enough with it.
Boston U. Is that a joke???
Rugers. I repeat my questions but with less animation.

tigerbound - I agree for the most part with your list, but I’d get rid of BU, GA Tech and Rutgers and replace them with Berkeley, Penn, and Michigan.

no to Mich.

seriously? It’s internationally renowned dude

Yeah, its a very good school, but top 15?

I mean, ignoring the fact that we’re all forgetting about foreign universities (Oxford and Cambridge come to mind) there are still a good number of schools in the US such as Duke, Cal Tech, U Chicago (especially), Georgetown, and others that I think are far more prestigious (and better) than U Mich and the other schools I talked about in post 1714.

But again, that doesn’t mean I don’t think U Mich is a great school. There are just a lot of great / world renowned universities out there.

H Y P S M

UC Berkeley, Columbia, Caltech, Duke, Chicago, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, Michigan and UPenn
