Transitioning from High School Academics to College

Hi!

So recently I am almost through with my Junior year and let me tell you. It’s the hardest year I’ve ever had in my entire life. It was so overwhelming and so many test and I have 2 AP test coming up this week, and worrying about ACT, Scholarships, and mentoring programs it was all hard. My biggest challenge was AP. I am so use to either briefly going over my notes and acing test and not really having to study that my AP classes was a slap to the face. I struggled all year and continue to struggle with studying and focusing. Time management is still tricky for me, I a learning how to teach myself, but I am slowly getting use to projects have longer due dates and not leaving it to the last minute, (I am a horrible procrastinator) and slowly trying to work on my organization skills but its all so hard. I am not confident I’ll do to well on my AP, I’m taking English Language and US History, and sometimes I have burst of confidence but then I’ll plummet into despair and it seems like no matter how hard I study I can’t seem to retain the knowledge but afterwards I am to call it up or it just takes something to jog my memory and that’s frustrating. I honestly don’t know if my school is preparing me well to succeed in college because everything is so disorganized and alot of my friends say they don’t plan to go to a 4 year like I do because of the school, and that affects me as well. How is College Academics? What I fear most is that I won’t be able to keep up with the course work, even though I am predicted to do well, I feel like I could adapt but with AP giving me such a slap in the face I’m nervous. I heard many pople say they mess up first semester of college then spend the next 3 years trying to fix their GPA, I don’t want to be that one. How do you succeed in college? How do you study? Like really study? Is it as hard as people make it out to be? I really don’t want to drop out because College really means alot to me and idk… I just feel so overwhelmed. Any help, guidance, or tips you could give me about managing college work versus high school work so I don’t get to jolted by the change.

Thank You!

College course work require more of your own time management and self motivation.

Classes do not necessarily meet every day, but may meet for longer times every other day. Assignments and projects tend to be less frequent but larger than they were in high school. You will be expected to read the books on your own before going to class.

High school AP courses may cover material similar to that in college frosh courses (depending on the course), but they still have the high school format with closer teacher supervision to help keep you from falling behind too easily. In addition, many AP courses take a whole year to cover what is ordinarily a semester’s worth of material in college.
