Same thing here. My son created an account last week no problem. Added a few schools. This week, he’s getting a log in error and it’s telling us the username doesn’t exist. Did you have any luck getting your issue resolved?
Does anyone have any information on TE at Lindenwood?
My daughter created a TE account and is able to get into again after creating it. I sat down with her to fill it out and we noticed that the button says submit rather than save. She did not submit because she hasn’t decided if her list of TE colleges is final. When we got back in, nothing was saved. Does anyone know if you can get back in and add schools once you’ve hit the submit button? @EastCoastProf and @Wendy did your kids hit submit? I’m wondering if there is any relationship between your login problems and the lack of ability to save v. submit.
My kid made a short list of schools he was sure he’ll be applying to this month and hit submit, thinking it was more like “save”. By clicking submit, it entered the portal app and is now waiting for an “export decision” from my employer. My employer let me know they received his request, and can add more schools at any time.
What kind of information are you looking for? It sounds like they cover full tuition, and that they award it to less than 10% of the applicants, although I think those percentage estimates aren’t always super-accurate.
No, S25 hasn’t clicked submit yet, and we also found this issue that there is no “save” option, and that the application does not save between log-ins.
I found a webinar online and it said colleges can be added/removed after the application is submitted, up until the deadline. It’s a max of 10 colleges at a time. My daughter still hasn’t hit submit so I can’t say if there is a login problem thereafter.
Exactly. Hopefully it may be a bit more than 10% and no clue what they look for in TE applicants. If its first come first served or stats.
Hi all-glad I found this-it’s been very informative and I appreciate it!
D25’s list has:
Siena
Fordham
St. Bonaventure
Drexel
Quinnipiac
Salve Regina
We are in NY so she has SUNYs on her list too. She has a 4.0 W, 7 APs/DEs, 1140 SAT but wants test optional. Minimal ECs other than Girl Scouts. Plans to major in communications.
Second-timer here! Just had a son graduate from Lafayette where he was awarded TE after initially being waitlisted…that was an April 2020 nailbiter for sure
On to my next/last kiddo:
S25/29. 1300 SAT, UW GPA 3.9 or so, smattering of AP courses, section leader in band, captain of a sports team, Eagle Scout by the time he applies.
I work at a mid-sized comprehensive private university in New England, so of course this son wants to move to VA, NC, or SC. Current list is prohibitively short. Admissions is likely at many of these, but TE is a total crap shoot:
Richmond
Elon
High Point - already a “Junior Scholar” - they are the KINGS of marketing
Furman
Wofford
As he’s visited colleges, his measuring stick is “Would I rather go here than ?” and the answer has been a lot of “no”. I don’t really see his list growing, but I’d welcome suggestions if anyone has them.
I have no idea what the secret TE sauce might be, other than seeking to make as many meaningful touches as possible. Richmond admissions said flat out that they do not count touches, so they are his least likely admit/TE school. The others are reasonable admits but all are uphill TEs.
The spreadsheet that is linked in this thread is AMAZING and is about as good of a guide as we could hope for.
I’m happy to field q’s from any first timers, and am thankful for this community – I think the effort to find this thread elevates the discussion above the one in the Facebook group, but I lurk there, too.
Good luck to the seniors and their families!
I’m assuming he’s already checked out all of the TE schools in NC/SC/VA and decided that these were the only five of interest. Is that correct?
It’s not a TE school, but he might want to take a look at Christopher Newport (about 4400 undergrads) in Virginia and perhaps U. of Mary Washington (3500 undergrads) too. Has he considered any schools in Georgia, Tennessee, or Kentucky?
In terms of other TE schools to consider, if he’s willing to expand slightly geographically he might want to look at:
- Samford (AL): About 3700 undergrads in Birmingham
- Bellarmine (KY): About 2300 undergrads in Louisville
- Centre (KY): About 1400 undergrads and a Colleges that Change Lives (CTCL) school Centre College – Colleges That Change Lives
- Belmont (TN): About 7400 undergrads in Nashville
- Lee (TN): About 3400 undergrads
- Lipscomb (TN): About 3k undergrads in Nashville
- Rhodes (TN): About 2k undergrads in Memphis and a CTCL school Rhodes College – Colleges That Change Lives
- U. of the South (TN): About 1600 undergrads
- Union (TN): About 1900 undergrads
- Berry (GA): About 2200 undergrads
- Mercer (GA): About 4900 undergrads
- Oglethorpe (GA): About 1500 undergrads in Atlanta…and offers a flagship match, even if he doesn’t get TE
- Harding (AR): About 3500 undergrads
- Hendrix (AR): About 1100 undergrads and also does a flagship match and a CTCL school Hendrix College – Colleges That Change Lives
Sorry if this is common knowledge, but what is a “meaningful touch” in this context?
Some colleges track the number and quality of interactive touches with applicants – visits, emails opened, email interactions with admissions staff – and while the touches may not be more important that overall candidate quality, they CAN be a tiebreaker. It’s just like looking for a job or even dating – we all just want to be loved! In admissions, someone’s clearly expressed interest is a good indicator of having a higher likelihood enrolling – better “conversion rate.”
Thanks for the feedback! We have family connections to VA/NC, and we’re looking to keep it to a (long) one-day drive to campus. The VA state schools you mentioned are in the mix but I didn’t bring them up here (not TE).
Another one that was considered was St. Mary’s College of Maryland, but the vibe was off for him. It’s a rare TE state school, and off most folks’ radars.
Randolph Macon and Campbell are maybe as a possible second tier, but would really be a toss-up for him against my home institution.
He’s looking to study business, econ, econometrics, analytics – basically business/math/tech hybrids – and is not interested in an activist student body, so that is a limiting factor in his likes/dislikes.
Did he consider Hampden-Sydney? My impression is that it has a similar vibe to the other schools on your list, but it is a men’s school. Perhaps one of these majors might interest him? Economics and Business, Mathematical Economics, Mathematical Computer Science, as well as Applied Mathematics. I’ve linked the relevant departmental pages below.
oh ok so what’s called level of interest in the CDS.
YES! Seems to check the boxes.
I tried to sell him on that one, and he wasn’t biting. HS has one of the BEST alumni networks in the country, but that couldn’t tip the scales.
Does anyone have an idea on how much recommendation letters factor in? Only 2 schools (Suffolk, Simmons) require a teacher recommendation at all, would more help her TE app? She is well above the stats for admission at all schools (4.35 gpa/33 act) so not worried about that
Broadly, the grads/scores should be above the admissions median in order to be TE competitive anywhere. After that, it’s a crap shoot and I can’t find any data or anecdotes for Simmons or Suffolk!
I tend to stick to “demonstrated interest” as a determining factor – if granted TE, would your D definitely attend? If so, she should let the schools know that in any way she can.
@merc81 shared that the Princeton Review recently updated its lists of colleges based on student surveys. Hampden-Sydney ranked #5 for friendliest students and #13 for most loved colleges (i.e. overall satisfaction).
