@Elisette I’ll add a single data point: my D20 was awarded TE at Simmons. Her GPA and SAT scores were solidly mid 50 .
We were out of state (and out of New England) and my hunch is that holds a lot of sway there.

Just as with S23, the list is still evolving. My current top pick for her is U of Scranton. Anyone know about TE there?
I found some documentation that Simmons might have tightened up the amount of TE they were offering in recent years. I think they were going in the red a bit much, and changed their employee policy too.
Hi, we’re TE class of 2024. We were awarded for Scranton. So she’s a freshman my only logic from all of this was we were certified by our home institution in like early September she applied EA had her application in by early October we were accepted and we were awarded TE in December. She is very happy there.
They changed the sign up process at our home institution and I tried over Labor Day with no luck. I will try again soon to get approved!
Our data is on the spreadsheet from last year. Let me know if I can help in anyway. And like I said, we are very happy at Scranton.
I was also wondering that, and if they have changed policy since I emailed with them in May. Because in the new portal it has been possible to add 20. I asked the TEL at my institution and she did not have an answer.
I thought I would share since it’s been pretty quiet here. My son and I went to a Colleges That Change Lives college fair in Chicago, and spoke with at least a dozen reps from places that have TE. In fact, many of them said that they award to almost all applicants., which was different than what the official TE website said. These are smaller liberal arts colleges around the country, and have a lot to offer average students as well as those that are more competitive applicants. Also, many have rolling admissions and you can find out early in the game where you stand, and many don’t require lengthy essays or letters of recommendation. I would just encourage everyone to think beyond the big names that you might know and embrace the possibilities of smaller schools.
I’d love to hear what schools impressed you at this visit.
My S25 will be applying to TE schools this year. Is there a spreadsheet (as in year’s past)?
3.95 gpa competitive/rigorous suburban high school
AP US history award
5 APUSH, AP Calc A/B, Human Geo, and Japanese this year
Writing Fellowship
Full Scholarship to Berklee 5 week program
1400 SAT (will retake 10/5)
His list:
Syracuse
Pitt
Clark
BU
Fordham
Conn College
Looking for urban/near urban schools with strong Education and History programs. East Coast is preferred (as he doesn’t want to be further from home).
Sure! He really liked Beloit College and Lawrence University in Wisconsin, and the reps said Tuition Exchange was pretty easy to get there, almost a guarantee but they stopped short of a promise. He also like Willamette in Oregon a lot, but we took it off the list because it was a little further from home than we wanted. They also said that TE is very easy to get. Finally, he really likes Millsaps College, in Jackson, MS. They are small but seem to be focused on student outcomes and have a great track record for competitive fellowships. Plus the price is right! TE covers full tuition and they have fantastic study abroad programs and applied learning and undergraduate research opportunities. I just went through this with my daughter in 2023 and she got TE at really competitive schools but it was nerve-wracking and really expensive at the end of the day, even with TE. My son has chosen to be less stressed and think about the money and the kind of experience he wants versus the rankings. Many paths up this mountain!
Lawrence has curious phrasing on the new TE page – it says “Lawrence University offers the set rate to all admitted students. For Fall 2024, the Tuition Exchange Scholarship at Lawrence is $42,000 and tuition is $56,670.” The “all admitted students” implies a guarantee, but definitely worth double-checking for folks applying there through TE.
Yes, we went on a tour after the college fair and the admissions officer verbally told me everyone gets it but couldn’t promise without going through the whole process. I would encourage anyone who’s considering it to do the tour. It’s a cute little town and the campus was nice. I think my son liked Beloit a bit more as the student body seems a bit more funky/artsy but it’s going to be a tough decision between those two.
S25 isn’t applying outside of East Coast / New England but from what I know Lawrence indeed is great! My university has both TE and CIC-TEP, and Lawrence just joined CIC-TEP this year as a member, which I thought was wonderful.
Bard has a cool Historical Studies program and a 4+1 MAT for Education (but 2 hours outside of NYC might fall outside the scope of “near urban”?)
Wheaton in MA has a comprehensive Education major with different specializations, and a History major with a concentration in either United States, Europe, or East Asia
Temple has a whole College of Education and and a solid History major
Providence College just revamped their History major making it less Eurocentric and more Global in curricular scope, if that appeals, and a pretty versatile education program
There are a bunch of NJ schools strong in both that are on the TE list. One thing is, in NJ all Education majors have to be double majors (so, History can be one of the “content” majors) – which if your son already wants to double major, may be a good option, since the schools are set up for that.
S23 toured Lawrence and it is a nice school (his gf attends currently). Sadly I got the “too small and too close” from him!
Thank you- I think Temple needs to go on the list!
Is it 20 schools now?
Acceptances to 2 TE schools so far (Mercyhurst and Lindenwood). Now to wait for financials.
I just went to a TE webinar and they said it is 20 now. Sounds like a recent change.
