I think the apps will be submitted this week! Having a pet die throws off your (very attached) kid’s essay editing focus. She’s so close to submitting.
We have visited a few-and thus far my daughter has crossed most of them off her list.
*** Mount Holyoke-**TE here would have been unlikely, and when we visited we did not know about TE, only CIC. It was our first open house and we got a lot of information. We were shown a parking spot and greeted by two very enthusiastic and kind young women. There is a lot of emphasis on “collaboration over competition” which would have worked well with my daughter’s personality. Overall, it was just a really nice vibe. My daughter decided not to sit in on any classes, but many were available. The campus is gorgeous. She decided she wants something a little bigger.
*** Siena-** We went to an open house in late August, when students were only starting to move in. The campus is compact and very pretty. The panels with professors and students were informative and we learned a lot. The initial presentation from the marketing staff was a bit off-putting. One speaker in particular was throwing around stats which compared SUNY unfavorably to Siena, including one comparing graduation rates that was off by 20 percentage points. The school’s core curriculum is very thorough, the academic programs are interesting, and there are lots of opportunities for academic and social activities.
- Drexel-my husband took our daughter to this one. We like Philly a lot and she really liked the campus-so far it’s the only urban one she’s seen. The main draw was the co-op program and she’s not super set on communications, but she saw several majors that had potential for her. She decided she prefers a more suburban campus (apparently Quinnipiac has a state park across the street and she loves that feature). And it seems they are going to a semester system, but she did not like the academic calendar-she wouldn’t be home when her friends are home, and she wouldn’t be home when her dad has his break in December/January.
We are going to see Drew, Salve Regina, and Quinnipiac soon. She just added Hobart & William Smith, Le Moyne, Seton Hall, Marist, Sacred Heart, and Saint Anselm. Maybe Ithaca. Not sure when we’ll be seeing those.
Did she consider Saint Joseph’s? My daughter liked that campus a lot! She has visited LeMoyne as well.
My daughter is a sophomore at Mount Holyoke and loves it. I can’t speak to likelihood of TE this time around but my sense is they are relatively generous with it. I would just say that if your daughter wants something bigger, there’s always the 5 College Consortium. My girl goes to some classes at UMass and to parties there and gets the big school experience, but is happy to return home to her small liberal arts college.
We had a problem originally but just the wrong year selected. Make sure the right application year is used.
My son loved Drew – it’s at the top of his list from the TE list. If your daughter wants to be in a green area, the “university in the forest” Drew is perfect for that. I believe they are about to officially sell their forest to the town of Madison, but the whole point of the sale is preserving/conserving it, so it’s not going anywhere.
Did you see the news about Drexel’s enrollment decline and combining colleges? That one surprised me a bit.
In her current preferred order, SUBMITTED Apps!

Just need supplemental questions for Simmons completed.
Question for fellow parents: there is a question in the common app that asks “do you intend to pursue need-based financial aid” – what is everyone else putting down as an answer? Does pursuing TE count as pursuing as need-based financial aid?
We put yes. I don’t know what it means to “pursue” need based aid? We just filled out the FAFSA and sometimes they offered grants.
My son is now a junior on TE, so I wanted to circle back with some thoughts. I decided to leave my institution this year. It was difficult to get an answer about when TE would end, because I was trying to ask questions before I decided to actually leave. I left the week before the start of the semester. Since he was already recertified for the year, his college said they would not remove TE unless the exporting institution rescinded the re-certification. My son will be on co-op for the spring semester so I won’t know what would have happened with spring tuition, because we don’t pay tuition while out on co-op. His college said they will change his financial aid to the academic scholarship he was awarded at application ($18000), rather than the $41k set rate, and would also have given money based on need (we do not qualify). We will have 3 semesters without TE. Because he is in a 5 year coop program I would have had to work there 3 more years for those 3 semesters, and hospital pay is a lot higher, so the math mathed for us. I hope this helps people consider what if scenarios. Also, I had another thought…He was very interested in UDel, but was not even offered a waitlist for the exchange. I can’t help but wonder if we had made a deposit if it could have made a difference at the last minute. He was offered TE at 3 schools, what if spots were offered and not used? Just a thought in case someone is interested in gambling a deposit at a dream school. Good luck everyone! Prepare your seniors to wait! We heard on 3/3, 3/9 & 3/14! It felt like forever.
yes, it is financial aid. They want to know if you are full pay. I hate to say it makes a difference but colleges are much more willing to take the kid whose parents will foot the full bill. Saw this especially with BC in our town.
Cross posting and putting it out there. 3.3 gpa, TO, Latina. Major will be in the social work, criminology, family/human development or counseling realms.
Putting it out there in print to see how wrong I may be in the future. If I had to rank where she may end up, here is my current list of guesses (in order).
Due to her lower stats we know receiving TE is a long shot so we have given her other options that we feel may end up affordable for us and where she may be happy attending. She has applied to quite a few other schools (both TE and non-TE) but these would be what I feel she would consider her more “top picks.”
Lindenwood (TE)
Central Michigan U
U of Scranton (TE/FACHEX)
U of Southern Mississippi
U of Nebraska Omaha
Saint Joseph’s (TE/FACHEX)
LeMoyne (TE/FACHEX)
Creighton (TE/FACHEX)
St. Louis U (TE/FACHEX)
Marquette (TE/FACHEX)
popping in from the class of 2024, but I believe my D is at the same school, and I was curious if you knew how your (former) home institution was going to handle the co-op semesters? My HR liaison seems clueless about it, though I did get in writing (email) from the RIT liaison that they would honor the TE set rate amount for 8 non-consecutive semesters, regardless of how our home institution certifies.
I have tried to reconstruct the answer to this question from the various ExCel sheets from previous years, but thought I would ask on the thread too. I would love to know about schools that allow for “top-ups” to TE via their own institutional merit scholarships (not need-based). So if you know of schools that have done that, I would love to know!
That would be called “stacking” scholarships…
Syracuse
Right, I know, I saw that there is a column for it in the ExCel sheets, and Syracuse was one place that was mentioned. But I figure not everyone fills out the Exel sheet or maybe they have second-hand knowledge about someone getting extra money.
ED/EA/Regular admission question here:
I have the sense that at least some TE schools give preference to ED applicants (Syracuse, particularly), but have also been told “all are considered.” Has anyone heard specifically about any advantage to being ED vs Regular for TE?
Thanks everyone- getting real here!
Some schools do have it explicitly on their TE webpages that their process favors ED students, and that there may or may not be leftover TE scholarships for regular decision applicants. Muhlenberg used to have it on their page on the old TE site (does not on the new one).
Admission #1 is in, DD25 is in at Duquesne! I love the Duquesne campus for her, but it’s not her top pick. I think she has a good shot at TE there (3.7uw, 4.3w - will go up this fall semester; 33 ACT; 11 APs, 3 DE; average activities) (Applied: 10/10, Accepted 10/18, invited to honors college)
Admission #2 is Saint Peter’s in Jersey City… she is 99% not attending here, but will likely receive TE as 90% of students do and her stats are far above the median. She had to add it to her app though. Kids.
