Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): NHS, community service club (founder/president), competitive dance team (captain), JV swim team, French Club, Model UN, ALA Girls State participant
Job/Work Experience: I’ve worked at a local farm for four years, a water park for a year and a half, and an ice cream shop for less than a year
Volunteer/Community Service: My main community service is over 200 hours volunteering at a local hospital. I have some other stuff here and there totaling to over 350 hours I think.
Summer Activities: work, dance, volunteering
Essays: My Common App essay was okay, not my favorite thing I’ve ever written, but it was about my global community service experience.
My Why Tulane? was really specific. I was really proud of it and think it definitely showed I’m really interested in the school even though I wasn’t able to visit.
Teacher Recommendations: An English teacher I had for two years and am really close with and a US History teacher who I knew pretty well.
Counselor Rec: I grew really close with my counselor junior year so I think he had a lot of good things to say about me.
Additional Rec: nope
Interview: no
Other:
• State (if domestic applicant): MA
• Country (if international applicant):
• School Type: Regional public school but one of the best, most rigorous public schools in the country
• Ethnicity: white
• Gender: female
• Income Bracket: around 150k
• Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): girl going into politics? lol that’s the only thing I can really think of
Reflection:
• Strengths: Test scores, community service/job experience
• Weaknesses: I’m in CP math and am not taking a science my senior year.
• Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: One of the questions on the application as about community service abroad and I went to South Africa for a community service trip with my school junior year then wrote my Common App essay about that so I think that helped. I also think my Why Tulane? essay showed how interested I am in the school. Also, girls going into political science is kind of rare so that might have helped a little?
• Where else you are applying or have already applied: Villanova (deferred), Lafayette, Loyola Maryland (accepted), American, James Madison, University of Richmond, William and Mary, Elon (accepted), Wake Forest.
• General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Don’t be too pessimistic and keep an open mind! I wasn’t expecting to get into Tulane so I more or less crossed it off my list but here I am! Also, definitely get your apps in early. I got all mine in two to six weeks before the deadline which definitely takes a lot of stress off the whole college application process.
For reference, I applied 11/1 and heard back 12/8
I was on a business trip and on the way home decided to swing through my old neighborhood in Kentucky, where I saw my next-door neighbor emptying the trash. His son, who was one of my son’s best friends through fifth grade, got EA to Tulane, as did mine. They have since swapped a couple of text messages. My son is 80-percent-plus on Tulane. His friend is still undecided, but I think it would be great if they were both at the same school.
FWIW, they both had 35 ACT and extraordinarily rigorous high-school coursework. My son was light on community service, but guess it didn’t matter.

• General Comments/Advice/Hindsight:
Do you guys know if PTA and DHS are rolling notification or do we have to wait until February as it says online?
Around Feb 20 I think.
They are not rolling, they are mailed out on the same day.
And they’re only mailed right? They don’t tell you anything online? That’s the impression I got from last years PTA and DHS awards. You had to wait for the UPS package to find out.
Yes, and I think if you sign up for a UPS account you can see if a package is being mailed to you in advance. I know several people found out that way last year.
@rollwave21 I applied EA to Tulane with a 33 ACT and 4.0 UW, full IB, great extracurriculars, leaderships, recs, etc. and it really is one of my top choices. Regarding your earlier post, do you think it’s possible that an admissions counselor thought Tulane was a backup, and if so, how would you suggest that I show interest?
I was wondering if any ED Applicants that did the interview get deffered or rejected?
@queensaana I did the interview and got accepted for spring semester. I don’t know how much it helped.
To anyone accepted for spring semster please join my Tulane spring semster thread to talk about your plans and your thoughts

do admitted students have to send their final high school transcripts if they plan on attending?
Well, I guess it’s about time I post this.

Objective:
• SAT I (breakdown): Didn’t send
• ACT (breakdown): 30
◦ English 32
◦ Math 30
◦ Reading 32
◦ Science 28
Note: I retook the ACT in December and got a 35 (E36, M36, R36, S31), but this obviously wasn’t used in decisions.
• SAT II (place score in parentheses): M2: 700, Bio: 700, Lit: 460 (I didn’t mean to submit this… it was an accident.)
Another Note: I also retook Subject Tests again in December and improved to M2 (780), Bio (710), Lit (650)
• Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.41
◦ Weighted (out of 5.3): 3.71
• Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): n/a
• AP (place score in parentheses): I didn’t submit scores… but here are the APs I’ve taken: US History, Euro History, Bio, Enviro Sci, Lang, Physics I,
• IB (place score in parentheses): N/A
• Senior Year Course Load: AP Lit, AP Psychology, AP Calc AB, AP CS, AP Stats, Creative Writing
• Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): none? All my awards are athletic or ec.
Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses):
Former top swimmer (I fell off the radar a little bit)-as a freshman in high school I was #1 in the country in a couple events, so with this I’ve been Utah High School Athlete of the Year twice, I hold multiple state records in my high school division, and some other stuff I guess.
I also do science olympiad: I got 6th at state in cell biology, and 12th at state in disease analysis (last year).
I am working with some peers to create our own cafe (through an organization). I mostly help with creating the website and some of the manual labor, but we also have to design the space, interview people for jobs, and create a financial plan.
This year I am a co-head editor for my schools Literary Magazine. Our lit mag is highly regarded and has one dozens of awards, often being called one of the top 10 high school literary magazines in the country.
I am president of our schools LGBTQ club. Most notably, last year we petitioned to get a gender neutral bathroom in our school and change graduation robes all to one color (rather than segregating by gender) to help make transgender students feel more welcome.
I played piano for 10years (stopping when I was 15) and went to competitions state-wide
Job/Work Experience: n/a
Volunteer/Community Service:
For the last two summers Ive been a 1st grade teachers assistant. I worked about 20hrs a week in the summers?
I used to work at the rape recovery center, volunteering about 12hrs a week, only for a year though.
Over summers I taught swim lessons to disadvantaged children.
I helped participate in a cell biology cancer research thing at the University of Utah (it sounds prestigious but I mostly just got people coffee and did copy machine crap)
Throughout high school, I think I have close to 800hrs of community service?
Summer Activities: swimming, volunteering, eating
Essays: My Common App essay was about not feeling I fit in anywhere (being gay, mixed race, Buddhist, and in a divorced family) and how after my sister dropped out of high school I felt the need to be perfect. It was very well written and many people loved it. Maybe 9/10? 10/10?
My Why Tulane? It was hella specific. Since I want to go into medical research I talked about Tulane’s history as beginning as a med school, and I quoted certain professors at the school who I admire. I loved this essay - 9/10
Teacher Recommendations: At my school we’re not allowed to read our teachers/counselor’s lor, so I’m not quite sure.
One of my teachers is an amazing teacher and I know her letter was hella person (I’m also the only person at my school who asked her for a letter since she’s scary af). I know it was really well written, I’m just worried she might have been a little too critical.
My other teacher, my physics teacher, might have been too nice. He’s great and all, but I’m worried he only wrote good things about me lol.
Counselor Rec: My counselor LOVES me. I eat lunch in her office (the waiting area part) and always talk to her. She loves me and she’s really, really great.
Additional Rec: My longtime swim coach wrote me one, but he just sent it to my counselor and she incorporated it into hers.
Interview: no
Other:
• State (if domestic applicant): Utah
• Country (if international applicant):
• School Type: Private School - very well known. We are consistently a top10 debate program in the country, ski program in the world, and lit mag is well renouned. Additionally, my school is often known for deflating grades. I have had teachers in the past who will curve a test down.
• Ethnicity: white/asian (japanese)/pacific islander (malaysian, singaporean)
• Gender: male.
• Income Bracket: my parents are divorced. Mom is ~60k, dad is very wealthy, 500k+
• Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): not that I can think of
Reflection
Strengths: ECs, Essays,
• Weaknesses: Grades, test scores?
• Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My ECs and Essays definitely stand out. Being white or asian doesn’t help… but being mixed race is a sweet spot that does. My diversity definitely though: Gay, mixed-race, Buddhist, and I did this in Utah of all places where everyone is White and Mormon. It might be important to note that I also had to write in the additional notes sections about how I have a missing trimester of grades - I was hospitalized for pneoumonia and out of school for about 5weeks. Also, my mom worked 3jobs to support my school and swimming (b/c my dad didn’t help finnancially a lot), so I talked in my common app essay how I did all the cooking, cleaning, and grocery shopping at home.
• Where else you are applying or have already applied: Georgetown (deferred), UMich (accepted), UnivofToronto (accepted-Trinity College), McGill (accepted), UnivofVirginia, Princeton, Yale, Indiana-Bloomington (accepted), NYU
• General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Work in advance! I can’t tell you how relieving it is to be done with applications like a month in advance. Additionally don’t stress too much! I don’t have great grades and so many people told me I wouldn’t get into schools like Michigan, or Tulane, and here I am! Good luck to everyone!
I applied 10/16 and heard back 12/5
Has anyone received the final COA numbers for those accepted?
Good luck everyone!
Anyone know when stamps scholarship interview invitations come out?
@Harryp17 Last year they went out around late February/Early March. Some alumni interview invitations did just go out for the full tuition scholarships, from which they pick the Stamps finalists, but these aren’t the actual Stamps interview invitations.
