No, but we haven’t committed. My daughter’s heart is at Tulane. My wallet isn’t there yet. She applied for the big scholarships and was a finalist for the Paul Tulane. They increased her merit aid for that reason, but we’re still in the hole.
We’d love to commit, but as things stand, we can’t unless we can wrestle up some more money. We’re those people who responsibly started a 529 when our girl was a baby. We’re middle class, but make too much to get any need aid. Right now, I have about an $80k deficit over 4 years to figure out how to fill. We’re retirement age, so tapping our retirement monies or borrowing are not viable options. We’re applying for every two-bit scholarship we can find, hoping we can raise the money by May 1.
The one bright spot is she’s received scholarships elsewhere. It’s not Tulane, but she’ll go to college.
No I’m visiting for the first honors weekend to get my first impression of the school. I would love to be able to give away any scholarships I got if I don’t commit because I’m less likely than not to attend and I already have a similar financial offer to a high ranking public that’s more suited to my field. As for that email I selected the “waiting” option and filled out the bubbles of fields I wanted information on.
Thank you, Stressed. I guess that email was about planning for RD admissions instead. I know they have this thing down to a science, but I also know they accepted a record percentage of their entering class by ED this year. That leaves even less space for RD admissions. They probably want to get a grasp on what the EA students who haven’t yet committed want to do.
Meh. I’m still bummed about my girl not getting TRIA. I mean, she even has experience. She’s worked for a freaking university lab as an intern in high school! Of course, this is her mom speaking, but objectively speaking, she’s better than good.
Appears TRIA is new and I cannot find any information on how much the stipend is. But I would say that just because she did not get TRIA doesn’t mean a paid research assistantship isn’t an option. My D is currently in her second year and is on her second assistantship and the current one is paid. She uses it as spending money, but there would be nothing preventing a student from using that money to help with educational expenses.
I believe I recall Tulane saying it was new this year. I’m optimistic something will work out. We’ve got a lot of lines in the water. And worst case, she applied to all good schools. She’ll go … somewhere.
We are attending the first honors weekend, too, Stressed. Not sure it’s the best use of funds if she doesn’t end up there, but it may give her a better sense of what’s right for her. She is also interviewing this week for a full ride at a well-regarded public institution. That option came through after we’d bought nonrefundable tickets to NOLA.
Enjoy the trip!! There are worse places to visit even if she doesn’t end up there. Treat it as a getaway as much as an evaluation, see the sights, have some fun. Also, don’t sweat those emails asking if you are going to commit or not. They go out to all accepted applicants and are simply a way for them to gain a clearer picture of their current numbers. Some will tell them straight up that they will or will not be attending and those are the responses that they are looking for from those emails. They also understand that others like yourselves are awaiting additional acceptances and information, so no harm in responding the way you did. That’s exactly the way we did a couple of years ago. After Honors Weekend, though, she was sold and we checked the “Yes” box shortly thereafter. Good luck!
Are you kidding? We have reservations at Commanders while we’re there. And at the risk of outing my kid, she wrote about food and beverage in at least one college essay she did. This family knows how to eat!
@h8annah My son has high (relatively) financial need. He was deferred times including Tulane. High stats, good-great essay(s), leadership, etc. Apparently, at this point anyway Tulane doesn’t want him nor any place else. I’m glad some schools are throwing money at you. Try to love those who love you. I know I’ll encourage my son to if anyone does show any love. Best of luck. I know this hurts regardless
@seniorlol. My friend’s daughter (deferred EA) just got good news from Tulane so it seems as though there are rolling acceptances going out. I do know she visited recently. The waiting is dreadful so best of luck!
