Folks, rankings aside, I wanted to see what your thoughts are on the safety on and around Tulane’s campuses. Looked up their crime report at
https://publicsafety.tulane.edu/daily-crime-log
it shows over 200 evens over some 50 days or so, 4/day. Not every university would have it out in the open, hard to compare to other institutions, urban ones in particular. As a parent, cant help to be concerned. Is their a reason to be concerned or it’s business as usual for urban campuses? Interested to hear from those parents who have/had their children study at TU especially if they need to commute across NO for classes, volunteering, clinicals etc.
As a parent with a son there (sophomore) and someone who keeps an eye on the parents FB page - but also someone that lives in the northeast so don’t have direct knowledge/experience -
The bulk of safety issues I hear about from parents relate to MardiGras and/or the Boot and center around theft of phones and/or wallets/purses. There’s a certain amount of awareness that the student needs to have while venturing out. For example a recent post highlighted that the woman had her phone stolen out of her back pocket while in a crowd at a parade. The parade routes attract pickpockets. If your student has the awareness of the extra precautions one would need to take going into any city or “club” atmosphere then I wouldn’t worry too much about it. The school does send many emails and have on-campus information sessions on “how to be safe during carnival season”.
There are area’s of the city that aren’t great - no different than any other city - and the students get to know what area’s those are and know to avoid them, etc. Without knowing where your student would have their clinicals or volunteering it’s tough to say if it’s in an area of concern.
Will they have a vehicle? That’s a whole different animal between parking (car break-in’s) and weather (periodic flooding).
I took the data you linked and of the 212 events, 68 were on campus. Breaking them down roughly:
Alcohol/Drug/Disturbance/etc - 31
Theft or Damage - 21
Violence (sexual or otherwise) - 16 (4 of which are Rape (1) or sexual assault(3))
Of the 144 off-campus events, 101 of them are noise/disturbance complaints. Hence the reason Tulane is driving towards a 3 year on-campus requirement!
Tulane juts announced on Instagram that they are releasing the rest of their decisions today

what time
My daughter was accepted EA and is 90% planning to attend. She is waiting to commit until her Destination Tulane visit next month. I understand that the housing portal opens soon (before our visit). Is she at a disadvantage for freshman housing if we don’t put the deposit down now? Thanks!
No, the housing is done randomly. There is no disadvantage as long as the deposit is in by the deadline.
Thank you!!
Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask … looking for a hotel for admitted students weekend. My son has grown up in Europe and has never visited New Orleans. I havent visited in 15+ years (but have always loved it!). So looking for a hotel that will give him the best 1st impression of the city. Thank you
Parkview Hotel is in a great location and it is close to Tulane.
I asked this recently on a different site and got lots of replies. By far the most common response was St. Vincent Hotel (8), followed by Chloe (4) and ParkView (4). No actual experience…just passing along
It depends on what the intent is. The school is about 4 miles away from what I would call the city proper. If you’re looking to stay someplace that gives easy access to the school look at the Alder. Basic accommodations but free parking and only a couple of blocks from the school. Lots of AirBnB options closer to the school.
If you’re looking for things closer to the downtown area there’s TONS of options. Look for things along St. Charles street for easy access to the Streetcar.
Not always giving the best deal but there are discounted deals/programs on the university site:

Did anyone hear about the release dates for the Paul Tulane/DHS?
Someone posted on one of the other threads that they called and was told “sometime in March”.
We received a notification about updated scholarships this afternoon/evening.
Thanks for posting, good luck to all that applied!!
Scholarship update, nothing received. Time to put this baby to rest. But will have a conversation with D before declining the waitlist
Can you clarify your situation? D applied for some of the competitive scholarships but had been deferred to waitlist (?)
I could well be wrong (often am) but I would think schools award scholarships to applicants that have been accepted. If some of those decline to attend it would free up those dollars to potentially re-award. Not sure how that might extend to applicants coming off WL and I have no direct knowledge of Tulane doing this but have seen on the boards for other schools that merit money is not uncommon for WL students. The schools know that they often need to incentivize someone to switch - that may have already committed to a different school. That’s unlikely to mean 1/2 off or a full scholarship but possible to be something. Last year was the first year in a couple that they pulled any substantial numbers from their WL so no idea if that might be an indicator for this year or not.
We are in the same boat. It’s just that her school counselor told her that even if she were to be picked from the waitlist, chances of getting any money from the school is very minimal. She has good aid offers from Northeastern and Baylor, so it’s better to move on, rather than seeing another disappointing email. I just hate her having to go through that. When the first deferral came, she cried while we were out in public.
Son accepted this week, just reading thru this, have they gone to 3 yr on campus requirement or just talking about it?
Plenty of good housing options next to campus.
