TV series recommendations / Comcast OnDemand

We are looking for a new tv series to watch on Comcast OnDemand. Any recommendations?

DH andI have liked many of the USA TV shows - Parenthood, Royal Pains, Fairly Legal, White Collar, Necessary Roughness, Cover Affairs and Suits.

If you are looking for a new TV series, I highly recommend Suits. We re-watched the Pilot episode last night. The Pilot and all of Season 1 are still available at Comcast On Demand… it’s great to not have commercials!

We are trying out Common Law (USA) and LOVE Burn Notice for summer fun. We are also trying out the Syfy show about a succubus Lostgirls, but I am not hopeful. If Scandal is still on there, that is a fun show as well.

I’ll second Burn Notice. If you’re into Sci-Fi and they have it, Falling Skies has been great. Can we assume you’ve already watched Monk? It’s no longer on, but it was a great show that ended when White Collar began.

Thanks for the ideas. DH really likes Burn Notice. I watch it sometimes too but prefer the other shows. Yes, Monk was fun!

My D recommended ‘Suits’ to me and I like that one. The next season starts in a few weeks.

Do you get PBS stuff on that on-demand (I don’t on my on-demand but it’s a different company)? If you do they have a few series that are good - the new Sherlock Holmes and Downton Abbey.

Other series I’ve watched are a couple of reality ones - Amazing Race and Celebrity Apprentice but I think you’re looking for more non-reality shows.

I don’t really watch any particular series since my W watches those endless, cloned dancing/singing contest shows (which I can’t stand) so I go to bed and read.

Thanks for the PBS Sherlock reminder. We saw the first ones when we did a month of Netflix at the holiday.

A reality show might be a nice change of pace. The few Survivor episodes I’ve seen were not too interesting. But Amazing Race and Celebrity Apprentice sounds interesting.

It’s funny you mention dance. I just saw the SYTYCD thread - I liked it but DH probably won’t. He also hates Glee. But… we both really enjoyed SMASH - that should have been on my list too. GladGradDAD - that might be a show that you and your W can watch together.

I haven’t heard of SMASH.

I tolerate her watching those shows because I don’t really care that much. While she’s watching them I just do work or something on my laptop.

The problem with Amazing Race and Celebrity Apprentice is that once you know who won it takes something away from it. There’s a thread on CC on Amazing Race (don’t read it if you’re going to watch the season that just finished or it’ll be spoiled). I watched the first Survivor but I don’t find that show that interesting and it moves at too slow of a pace.

I didn’t think I’d like Celebrity Apprentice but I do. It’s pretty interesting to see the true colors of some of these celebrities come out on that show plus I think about how I’d do some of the tasks (same with Amazing Race). My opinion of some celebrities has gone way down after watching them on that show but it’s also gone way up for some of them. If you can watch these from the beginning on on-demand and don’t know how it’ll end then give it a try.

Another reality show I like - Shark Tank (ABC). It has basically venture capitalists (the ‘sharks’) considering business propositions from individuals who are trying to start their own business. It moves quickly and is pretty interesting.

Have you tried Big Bang Theory?

Thanks Creekland - we love Big Bang Theory. (We are a geeky family. I’m surprised but delighted it’s a hit with all of America). Thanks for the reminder - I’ll look to see if there are any we missed.

We also enjoy Two Broke Girls. It’s a little crude, and the kids are amazed we like it. Sadly we can’t find it on Comcast On Demand. It’s really nice to have skipped or shortened commercials.

For those curious about Suits, here’s a link - [Suits (TV Series 2011) - IMDb](Suits (TV Series 2011–2019) - IMDb). Season 2 starts soon. It’s the kind of show that only has minimal plot beyond each show. It’s nice to know the premise (or better yet see the pilot), but each episode can stand alone.

Last year we had tired of “House”. The episodes seemed to follow the predictable formula (plausible misdiagnosis in the middle of the show, then later the final solution) or be really odd.

We decided to try “House” again, and only the 4/30 episode (Spring Break). We liked it and checked this week. Only the Finale was available. I have to admit, it was quite good! Now I wish we’d watched the full season.

I enjoyed Revenge and Body of Proof. I also enjoyed CSI Las Vegas now that Sam Malone from Cheers is the new boss. (I can’t think of his real name at the moment)

I hate that you can no longer fast forward on Comcast On Demand (sometimes it will let you use the page up/down arrows to advance in 5 minute increments.)

MizzBee give Lost Girl a chance. It’s campy and really fun. And it’s great to have a show with a positive relationship between two women at the forefront. Bo, the succubus, and Kenzi, a human, have a great friendship that is featured in most episodes.

We watch FallingSkies and Eureka, which is dopey and can be irritating with its psuedo-science, but sometimes I think that’s what we like about it. And we can’t say enough good things about Sherlock. Or Hell on Wheels!

Eureka has been EOL’d.

I don’t have Comcast anymore, so I’m not sure what they have On Demand. Ignore the following if they don’t apply ;)

If you like Sherlock, you might want to try some of the last seasons of Dr. Who. Steven Moffat is a lead writer for both now & he’s an amazing story teller. D2 powered through The Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) through the current Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) in record time & ended up dragging DH & I along for part of the ride. I NEVER thought I’d watch Dr. Who, but those BBC shows are smart.

One of her summer projects is watching Supernatural.

DH & I really like Person of Interest. We have a few on the DVR to catch up on.

You may like Leverage, Psych, or The Mentalist.

Sorry, just got back to this thread.

We’re science geeks too… love the show! Some of my mainstream friends don’t get it at all (or like it). I had to remind my guys that if you don’t get some of the science/relationship stuff it might not be all that funny. Others do like it, but most that do appreciate academics at the very least.

We used to like Psych. I’ll look into Leverage and The Mentalist.

For our geek family, Big Bang is funny enough that we’ll watch reruns and laugh again. We don’t know anybody exactly like Sheldon, but we do recognize many traits on the show.

This week we’ve gone back to watching our DVD set from Christmas - lecture series on art at the Louvre. It’s a nice change of pace. As always, we LOVE not having commercials.

Ted Danson, for the poster looking for the actor who played Sam Malone…

I love Person of Interest. I am so glad to see that it was renewed.

I also really liked Touch, the new Kiefer Sutherland show. The finale was last week and was just wonderful the way it weaved in a lot of the characters who had been featured during the season. The finale set the scene for a great second season.

I just had a look at the Streampix service at ComCast for $4.99/month. They are have a three-month free promotion. Seems perfect for us - especially as Hulu has been decreasing their offerings and moving to Hulu-Plus.

Does Streampix require a tv subscription though? We have no need for Cable TV but streaming would be nice. I have the feeling that we wouldn’t like Hulu-Plus given our usage of Hulu and their oddball list of what they carry and what they don’t.
