UC Berkeley - Class of 2022 Applicants Thread

@parentworry It absolutely has to do with impacted majors like CS. It is one of the most popular majors. They can only take so many kids. The reason you see many applicants with weaker stats getting accepted is EXACTLY my point. It is no longer enough to have high stats. One has to go above and beyond in their ECs - have a story so to speak. Have international or national or state awards in their passion - or be a leader, not just with title. It is so much more than grades/test scores. The essays have a tremendous impact these days, as do recs from the teachers. There are tons of smart kids. Yes, lots are getting denied, but they hang their hat on the fact they have top GPA, or are Valedictorian or NMF…it doesn’t matter as much. You must have that, PLUS everything else. Another thing is that “hooks” help - legacy, URM, 1st generation, athlete. Trust me…and then there is the dart board in the admission office. You hope the dart lands on the accept center circle for your child’s admission!!!

Why are people so shocked that high stats won’t get you into everywhere. Shouldn’t we judge people based off who they are and not just numbers

@anidad, you should be bold enough to apply for MAT then you might get into EECS instead, but applying for CS shows you might not be confident enough, since there are too many applying for L&S CS, they won’t pay extra attention to your application. To be honest, getting an A in CS61A proves you are a good programmer already, you could be successful anywhere else in other UC if not accepted by Cal

@Norinco522 what is MAT? EECS? and L&S CS.

Thank you for all your perspectives. My son’s resume includes his ECs as well as any awards he could muster in these 4 years. His essays were supposedly professionally reviewed with keen and well trained eyes.

Therefore, We are also resigned to the fact that his sticking to his self-belief rooted in his academic achievements would not cost him by asking for Engineering/ CS majors explicitly to any of these schools did make probably a big difference unfortunately. If he had his major in letters and sciences or undeclared, it might have been a different outcome. Hindsight is 20/20.

He is mature enough and confident enough he will live with the consequences, keep his head high and march on to make the best out of it to have a great future regardless of the UC experience

@LvMykids2, come on, you don’t know what?
http://met.berkeley.edu/
https://eecs.berkeley.edu/
https://eecs.berkeley.edu/academics/undergraduate/cs-ba/faq

So even if you got accepted into berkeley L&S CS, your chance to declare major is probably only 50%, so if you know you are good, got rejected by Cal is fine, you can do well, especially the CS61A is the first entry level CS course in berekeley, which will kill the CS dreams for more than half of the students if you can’t score more than 3.4. so if he can get an A in summer session in this class, it proves he/she is very competitive

wait im kind of late to the conversation but what is SIR on the portal and where would I see it if it war there?

@Norinco522 - Thank you for the clarification. When you said MAT in your previous e-mail, that confused us. We know about MET. BTW, my daughter did do her under-grad at Berkeley (dual major in 4 years B.A Applied Math, B.S Business from Haas). She is currently doing her Masters (MBAn) at MIT. My son could have chosen MET. You are right. But let us see what happens now with L&S application.

@anidad, Good luck to your son, if he got in, I’m sure he can claim his major and eventually it would be treated the same in the industry no matter if you are L&S major or EECS major.

@froggypop You will see SIR on Thursday if you are admitted.

We’ll just have to wait till Thursday cause that is when the truth comesout!! GOODLUCK TO ALL!!

what time on thursday are they releasing decisions

@pattybil4321 no clue

Ive been off for two days so I’m about out of the loop but I now have the 4 addresses, what exactly is the speculation on this?

@quinnbossel look at post #1290

Anybody out there still have 2 addresses? Maybe they’re slowly changing them all…

@knowledgeispower18 i have 2 addresses still, but im not sure why they would change mine, because according to chris, they changed his to add the street type abbreviation and extended zip whereas my address listed already has those.

Oh ok, doesnt that seem like a reach though?

Is this CHRIS dude the same guy that had all of you chasing your tails to get your calnetID?

Why would the list of addresses go from two entries, to four entries?
