Happy end of our kids’ first semester as UC Berkeley freshman! Hope all your kids are thriving at Cal and are ready to have a nice, month-long (!) break!

Looking forward to some lazy days at home before starting back up again.

BTW, my D is teaching a DeCal in the spring, if any of your kids are looking to pick up an easy 1 credit class

It’s been a great first semester for our kid, in so many ways!!! I am so glad that he managed to find his way to Cal, as it seems to be the perfect place for him :blue_heart: :yellow_heart:

Anyone know when is the best time for kids to start looking for apartments for the next year? And do they mostly start a lease at the beginning of the summer, or end of the summer?

Which DeCal is she teaching? My son may need one more credit.

My son and his roommates started looking in February I think, and found an apt and signed their lease in mid March. Their lease started in July, but their lease period was for 10 months until end of May. Leases can start at all different times depending on when occupants are vacating. It’s worked out great for them, and I think they will stay for their full 3 years.

I highly recommend North Berkeley Properties which had great communication, easy to deal with and especially important is that they are ethical. (Not all their properties are in north Berk). There will be more properties available in the coming months. Check their site often. Be very aware of scams and unscrupulous property managers and landlords. I think my son was able to apply for 3 properties on one application and they didn’t have to pay for the fee until their application for a property was accepted (if I remember correctly). Good luck in the search!

Another option : L&S 110 - Brilliance of Berkeley, was mentioned in this thread and looks really great. 1 unit, /no pass, in person or virtual option and has lots of room. My son is enrolled.

If you’re interested, I can DM you the info (I don’t want to post it publicly since that would essentially make her identity easy to figure out once DeCals are posted). But would be happy to provide the info privately

Happy New Year to all! Question, can Breadth requirements be taken in the summer at community college?

As long as the courses are transferable to UCB, yes they can be taken at a CC during the summer. I would have your student double check with their academic advisor to confirm they will be accepted and also check assist.org.

question on foreign language requirement, my daughter came across this on the L & S page. “Completion of high school foreign language (other than English) through the third year of instruction Letter grade of C- or higher”
would 3 years of high school spanish satisfy the foreign language requirement?

Your student can run a report in their Cal Central to see what degree requirements have been fulfilled by completed courses, exams, test scores, submitted transcripts. Its “Academic Progress Report” in My Academics tab.
