UC Berkeley Class of 2029 Official Discussion Thread

I have a question. My friend’s child was not admitted early uc berkeley Feb . But got email from UC berkeley like ." We know you are waiting Scholarship but be patient . Any idea why did they send this email?

They send this email to let applicants know only a small group of students are admitted early and that the majority of the applicants will get their decisions in March. It helps avoid the numerous emails and phone calls admissions would get from the stressed students whom believe they have been rejected by not getting an early admit or want to know when they will get their admissions decision.

The new engineering center will be named for Berkeley alumni Michael (EECS 87) and Janelle Grimes (PoliSci 86) who also co-founded the MET program. More below…

Something interesting… I was invited for R&C interview but was admitted to my alternative Major? Does anyone know how the alt Major process works (Primary L&S BA Linguistics, Alternative L&S BA Mathematics)

I’m not sure what your acceptance says, but Linguistics and Mathematics are not high demand majors, so you do not have to be admitted directly to either major.

This page explains how to declare the Linguistics major: Applying to UC Berkeley and Declaring the Major | Linguistics

This page explains how to declare the Mathematics major: Declaring the Major | Department of Mathematics

For reference, high demand majors are listed on this page: L&S High-Demand Majors for First-Year Students | Letters & Science

Did everyone get the email that explained the study abroad in London path?

My daughter got it.

So it looks like on Reddit everyone got it. I didn’t know that Berkeley did this kind of program. My older son did the version of this at Northeastern in their NU IN program two years ago. And I know UT Austin is doing it too. Has this been a longstanding program at UCB or is it a new?

I’ll ask my daughter if she did when she gets home. It’s new as far as I know.

Just speculation on my part that many students might graduate in 3.5 years and this semester abroad students take their spot.

Freshman semester abroad types of programs seem to be proliferating rapidly.

We got it, and I don’t think it’s new as this was said on the page the link clicks though to.
" Attend our upcoming online information sessions to learn more about the program, and hear from program alumni!"

Did the email also contain information about the Freshman Edge program? (Summer sessions)

Early accepted student here who didn’t get any email about the program!

Not surprised as it’s a way to make space for more students by spreading them out. My daughter did receive as well and it said that everyone did.

Did everyone receive an email yesterday about Global Edge and Freshman Edge program? Wondering if mass email or if targeted audience. Thanks!

GlobalEdge is a few years old if I recall correctly. The difference is that for UCB reg is first-come-first-serve, while UT Austin’s “Take the World By the Horns” (First Semester Abroad) requires an application. I got TWBH at Austin for South Korea, and early admission for UCB; Berkeley also offers 2 summer courses as well, while TWBH is just a few weeks up getting ready for the program. You don;t get credits or take full-fledged classes at Texas. Hope this helps.

In my personal opinion, I would not recommend FPF (freshman edge) unless you truly believe you need help in starting the college expereince.

Can you tell me more? I have friends who had their kids do summer on ramp programs at other schools who said it was the best decision they made.

I am college CO29 and our school sends about 20 to 30 kids to Berkeley per year. About 4 of them normally do FPF, and I’ve heard that you built good connections with the students, but after three program it feels like you were left behind everyone else who took classes. Really not good, especially at a school where people use each other like ladder rungs to get to the top.

edit: I don’t want to discourage anyone from the program, this is just my experience. Please do your own research and choose what is best for you. If you think that the culture is going to be too stressful, consider the program.
