UC Berkeley Class of 2029 Waitlist and Appeal Discussion

Since there were very few admits for 2024 off the waitlist, these are the dates that some individuals posted they were either admitted or knew someone admitted off the waitlist. Not everyone student admitted off the waitlist posts on social media so there may have been more admits on other dates but I only saw these 3 dates last year.

For the 26 admitted off the waitlist last year, do we have some idea on what major they were given admission for? I know one of them was EECS but were there any others?

does berkeley admit waitlist by major? do the non-impacted majors have a better chance or is it just a free for all? and same with california residents, do they have a better chance than oos?

Not all Colleges admit by major such as L&S so no not all waitlisted students are admitted by major. Open spots will be filled based on where there is room and UC Berkeley’s institutional priorities.

Regarding admits by residency, I am sure that UC Berkeley like all the UC’s will try to maximize the number of OOS and International students that they can get to enroll up to their cap of 18% but only admissions will know how many spots are available after May 1 for in-state, OOS and International students and will then admit based on these open spots.

i applied as a forestry major in cnr, idk if they accept by major or not and i’m in state. could u assume that there would be a significant number of open spots for cnr? is there data on this, like how many people get waitlisted and then get admitted from each college

CNR does not admit by major and there is no publicly posted waitlist data by college, major or residency. The only waitlist data that I have been able to find is posted on the Common dataset for each UC which shows the number of waitlisted students, the number the opt into the waitlist and the number admitted.

Here is an article on UC waitlists and will help you understand no one can predict whom will be admitted: https://www.sfchronicle.com/california/article/uc-waitlist-admission-numbers-berkeley-ucla-19408727.php

Based on the very few waitlist posts there were some admits from the College of Chemistry and L&S.

Hi Gumbymom, my son has applied for FA, does this reduce his chance of getting off Waitlist? Thanks.

UC Berkeley is need blind so applying for financial aid is not factored into the admission’s process.

Now that it’s the deadline to opt in waitlist, do we have any idea how many opted in this year?

Admissions would be the only one that would have that information and normally they do not make it public until the waitlist admits are completed and the waitlist is closed.

We are also in state student waiting for CNR. Let’s hope for the best.

i’ve been seeing that some colleges have already been accepting people off the waitlist now, has berkeley ever accepted people off the waitlist before may?

No. However, UCSD and UCSB also don’t usually accept people before may, but they did this year.

Honestly I think it just comes down to their yield and the major you chose

is there information regarding how many people were waitlisted this year? or do we have to wait and find out later. if so, does anyone have an assumption estimating how many people were waitlisted? do we think it’s more or less than before?

i feel like it’s probably more than before - i’m just a single data point but at my school (a public medium-sized HS in MA) we usually get no berkeley admits, but this year we had 2 admits and the vast majority of the remaining ~20 applicants were waitlisted (me included)

UCLA just had some big waitlist movement in CS+Lingusitics and Data Science a few hours ago. I think some other majors will have movement in the next few days. Its very unusual that UCLA is already sending waitlist offers since they are usually very good at predicting yield espically in majors like those which always tend to have high yield

So far, it has only been OOS kids. No in-state or intl kids. I don’t think there will be much intl acceptances espically with all the visa restrictions.

My prediction is that UCB will have similar outcomes with mainly OOS kids getting waitlist offers and not many in-state and intl kids getting offers. Just comes down to finances at the end of the day with OOS kids paying more tuition over in-state and also not having to deal with any visa stuff that intls might deal with, and I dont think colleges are willing to take the chance on that

that sucks for intl but esp for in state, the uc schools are literally for us :sob:
