UC Berkeley Freshman Class of 2028 Waitlist/Appeal Discussion

From what I’ve heard, UCB especially has issues with space and housing. They overbook to the point that melt might actually be a good thing for them, such that they don’t replace most of the melters from the waitlist. That being said, I’d bet a lot more melt arises from getting off the waitlist as opposed to weird housing situations.

There is a lot of such information about AI. TBH no one really knows for sure what will happen.
If CS is no longer the most sought after major then what is? Arts is much easier to replace as that is what LLMs do - generate text, poems, articles, images, videos…
Lawyers are super easy to replace as chtgpt cleared bar exam months ago, scientific exploration is much faster with AI (alphafold is finding new protein synthesis techniques)… even medicine is ready to be disrupted with personalized medicine…so whats left? trades?
Even there you will soon have bipedal robots to fix your dishwasher or clean the house.
So which major is future proof?

Can we stick to the topic of the waitlist on this thread?

Nothing much to discuss anymore

The housing shortage is gradually getting better now that there is a tremendous amount of new housing being built in Berkeley near the university. As a Berkeley resident, I have never before seen so much construction… it’s mind-boggling. The increased supply of housing in the area is causing rental prices to decrease, as well.

True - but CS discussions will be lost under the current subject heading. It needs a different discussion thread.

PLEASE, keep discussion to UCB waitlist!

Deleted, as poster already changed their user name

@tamagotchi, as a local have you heard of anyone negotiating a lower monthly rent on their lease, due to all the construction? My son is a student there starting his second year lease off campus. I’m aware of a very similar apartment (that also has a yard!) the same company has available with a lower rent. The price difference stuck out to me and your comment made me wonder if prices have dropped since they signed the original lease.

I don’t personally know any students who negotiated lower rent after signing a lease, but your son could try.

Speaking of waitlist. Is there any update in the last few weeks or is it still zero movement for in-state applicants?

Seems we are all experiencing the same thing — no movement, just despair! We’ve fully shifted gears away from any hope of getting in off the waitlist. Plan B has become Plan A.

I know it is not over till it is over but at this stage I have parked my car in the garage and switched off the lights. Haas would have been awesome but the current option is also excellent. All the best everyone.

Any updates or news about waitlists??? has it ever been so late for the waitlists to come out?? any long timers here who can throw some light please …

To answer your previous question, for your major, AI Engineer is one of AI proof jobs. CMU has the best master program in AI and Machine Learning, and the competition of getting into this area is insane. Are you still hoping to get off the waitlist? Student loans may take longer than you expected. I wish you the best of luck!

Any updates or movement for waitlist !! just despair and waiting ???

Yup. At this point (and for a while now, really), the waitlist only serves the university’s needs, not the applicants’.

I just got off the phone with admissions, and they said that all decisions will be out by tomorrow!
