Which college is Cal? Caltech?
Berkeley
Why is Berkeley called Cal?
I asked this same question a couple days ago. I guess itâs because originally there was only one university of California and it was Berkeley so itâs still called Cal
Interesting, thanks.
Oh. Really?. 2 years ago, some students in our school got into 2 schools . But this year is really tougher. So far only 4 students got into ucla in our school . It is really less than previous years.
Did your son decide his major yet?
It is hard because he applied Econ in most but uci ,ucsd and Columbia. He applied Data Science in Berkeley. Pomona has not enough seat for CS now. I didnât consider CS but i think he has to major CS with various reasons. So we are in dilemma now. We also applied HMC but he will be not accepted as Astrology.
UCLA has top 10 Business/Econ program for gradute school, but undergraduate problem is not⊠If he wants to major in Business/Econ, Cal, Stanford and Upenn is top picks.
Why you want him to major in CS? He is behind, as I mentioned in previous comments, those CS students took several CS courses in HS or CCC, some of them already had hand on coding experience⊠If he decides to major in CS, he may catch up in the summer.
Thank for good advice. He has a teacher for CS. He learned from 9 th. But he didnât take it at school . He did one quarter AP CS A. He got A+ but dropped because of homework. Our school doesnât record dropping course. Thank you very much!
Students do not need to have taken CS courses in HS or have prior coding experience to be successful as a CS or EECS major at UCB, if they are admitted to one of these majors as a freshman.
Students entering as freshmen donât need to âcatch up in the summerâ; there is plenty of time in 4 years to complete a CS or EECS major. âCatching up in the summerâ is something you would see more with transfer students who may come in needing several UCB-specific lower division courses, or with students who declare a major relatively late.
Students with prior experience may start out with a slight edge in 61a (however, they may also have bad habits or assumptions that need to be unlearnedâŠ!). Most students havenât been exposed to the bulk of the material in 61a in high school or CC, even if theyâve done lots of coding.
My personal feeling is that studentsâ math maturity is more important than programming experience. CS 70 can be a big stumbling block for some students.
Prior CS experience can help students to get a sense of whether they are genuinely interested in this area. But itâs not necessary for success.
From our experience, the hand on coding experience absolutely helped. Lots of assignments/projects need to be done independently, the workload is overwhelming.
The workload can be heavy in these courses. However, there is variation in how difficult and time consuming this is for the individual student, and it doesnât break out neatly by whether they did coding in HS.
Students who didnât have ANY experience and who would like a gentler on ramp to the major can choose to start with CS 10 which is only one semester. There is plenty of time in 4 years to complete a CS or EECS major even if you start with CS 10.
You just have to get admitted to the major. Good luck to all who are waiting for decisions
I now have only two addresses like before. Probably just a glitch on the website
My son who is an EECS Freshman at Cal now had no CS classes in his public HS, he is doing fine now in 61B(61A was last semester).
I agree with @tamagotchi that students donât need to take CS classes in HS nor they need to spend their summers grinding coding.
This will be the last summer before joining college and I would let my kid do whatever he likes.
We donât knowwell but if it is possible, we donât matter whether he will complete it for 6 years in college. I know some graduate late since changing major. Is it possible?
I know well about my sonâs personality. If he focuses on any thing, he doesnât care of anything , even doesnât hear anything. You know what like autism spectrum. ( not diagnosed). And he seats for 12 hours on desk , very consistently. Heâs weakness is speech. I think he can do well at CS and his IQ was 148 at mathematics but language.
Are you asking whether changing major is possible?
I think that possible. Some i know changed major in ucla from biology to CS now . They are sophomore in ucla. My daughterâs friends. I asked my daughter how they changed.
He applied for Data Science you said above (?), and is he still waiting to get in or did he receive early admission?
Data science in UCB but pre economics and business in ucla. I talk about ucla case. He suddenly insists to go ucla today. I guess it because of friends ?
