yes
Similar to @sfbayareaForUC said, when it comes to decision of Irvine and Davis, more bay area kids choose Irvine. My son is leaning toward Irvine than Davis.
- Davis is too close to parents, Irvine gave a good distance.
- People said the internship is easier if your target is Bay Area tech company, but never be able to confirm or deny. It become a “potential” benefit only.
- Irvine still ranks better.
For patent, choosing Davis has benefit
- Chance to see kids every two weeks (just one train away)
- You can jump on a face-to-face internship interview the same day the appointment is made.
- Less disruption in Davis.
But don’t forget that Davis housing is a potential issue.
Why would you say Irvine is ranked higher than Davis? Currently they are tied at 33, and historically Davis has ranked higher. My Bay Area son chose Davis over Irvine. We toured both schools and Irvine was too boring - there is nothing around campus except a big shopping mall and you will need a car to go anywhere fun whereas Davis is a college town with a vibrant downtown.
For ranking of Computer science related majors, UCI is the only UC that has a dedicated school for computer science. That possibly means it has more resources for those majors and make these majors ranked higher than Davis. On the other hand, Davis has the best animal science and vet program among all the UCs.
In respond to “For parents, choosing Davis has benefit” section. I prefer driving to Davis over taking the train because the train station is in downtown and is not close to any where I want/need to be. When my son has internship interview with companies in the Bay area, the interview format is still online instead of face-to-face. Finally, housing does not seems to be a problem in Davis, first year dorm is guaranteed and there are a lot of off campus housing available in Davis. On top of that, the Green village (on campus apartment) is also a good option for 2nd to 4th year students.
Sorry I was too fucus on the CS related ranking.
For CS, Irvine is only “slightly” higher in US News.
And dedicate computing school helps on the ranking.
I agreed that on the overall college ranking Irvine and Davis tied at 33.
No problem at all! My son is not majoring in stem so we are not focused on the computer science ranking. I think unless we are talking about top 20 schools, the little differences in ranking between Davis and Irvine does not matter too much. The students should pick based on how they like the campus, college life, etc. On a side note, the only person I personally know who went to Irvine for computer science ended up working at a university (less pay, no stocks) and was not able to get a job in corporate. But that is just one sample out of many. Good luck to your kid on choosing the best college for themselves!
Reasonable take, and I fully agree – the ranking by third party is good for an overview, but other factors become important when rankings are too close or even irrelevant. What a student derives from a school is based on what he or she puts into it, and even a school ranked #1 is worthless if the student is not happy to be there.
I’d like to add there are about 15 non-stop flights from three bay area airports to Santa Ana (SNA), and tickets generally tend to be less than $100 roundtrip. Odd days, or booked in advance, you’ll get a roundtrip tix for about $70. Considering this, both Irvine and Davis are equally accessible for parents.
creating a separate school is usually a way to gatekeep stuff. not really a big plus in my opinion.
Did you get an answer on whether updated accomplishments are able to be added within the waitlist section? I’m have our student check now.
According to the waitlist opt in, only updates on Senior grades were asked for this year of waitlisted Freshman applicants. UCD’s FAQ’s state that admissions will not accept
letters of recommendation, transcripts or other documents.
Since the opt in deadline was April 15 for Freshman, the question is moot at this point.
My son’s appeal request was denied this morning around 9am. Disappointed but this was rather expected given that appeals are rarely granted. Still holding out hope for a few waitlist responses from other campuses.
“UCI is the only UC that has a dedicated school for computer science. That possibly means it has more resources for those majors and make these majors ranked higher than Davis.”
Thanks for pointing out Wiki maybe outdated and having a dedicated school for computing (even just for gatekeeping) is significant enough that even UCB (the best UC, IMO) follows suit. Previously, having CS under Letter and Science in UCB and UCD never makes too much sense to me.
Thank you. Son is on the waitlist, added himself immediately, just wondering if those “additional accomplishments” were possible to add at this stage. Appreciate it!
Hey everyone, I’m currently waitlisted for computer science as a transfer student, the message on my portal says “We will notify you of our final admission decision by email and on this website on or around July 15.” As I understand it the waitlist is unranked, so does everyone have this date? Maybe I’m not quite understanding. Davis is my first pick atm and the waitlist is always on my mind haha.
Last year, UC Davis started admitting students off the transfer waitlist in early June after the SIR deadline.
Please note that this discussion is for Freshman waitlisted students. You can start your own discussion thread here: UC Transfers - College Confidential Forums
To anyone reading, I was fortunate enough to be accepted from the WL for IS L&S: Statistics on the May 6th wave.
However, I decided to pass the opportunity over to someone else on the WL as I intend to choose between UCI, UCSD, and UCLA (if I get into the WL for Actuarial Science). Good luck aspiring Aggies!
Any in-state for Mech Engineering got off the WL? Have kids gotten off the waitlist in prior years - for engineering with UC Davis? Also is yield rate for engg pretty high?
I have not seen any ME admits yet but there has been BME, Materials and Aerospace. Engineering yield has been around 20% so not as high as UCLA or UC Berkeley which have been close to 50%.
