Kid just got in, off WL, Bio major, in state
Son in state off waitlist for math analytics and operational research
what are his stats?
4.1 CALC AB BC, 5 on Ap calc test, AP comp SCi 4 year varsity basketball player
Well rounded
My son is off the waitlist for UCD. PoliSci, in state from San Jose. (Super relieved. UC admissions have been unexpectedly brutal.)
Just got off the waitlist earlier today for biochem & molecular bio, instate from San Mateo, relieved to say the least
Depends on your priority I guess (I assume you meant “socially dead”).
sfbayarea said that they knew kids that all preferred UCI over UCD and I was kind of wondering why 'cuz UCI isn’t known for a vibrant student life and it seemed kinda boring to us. But we live in LA and go to OC all the time …
My son got off WL for UCD but he’s already committed to UCSB and we’re going to probably just stay at Santa Barbara…
Anyone get off the waitlist for data science? I have not heard anything back yet and am getting scared I wont get off.
Because it is in OC. Northern California just doesn’t have a place like that- world class theme park, close to beaches and good food all within 20 mins. We had DL AP for years and they just could not get enough. It was my kids’ dream to go to Disneyland once a week. BTW, none of my kids got into UCI.
Really? This surprises me. I have a child who attended both and the schools, their culture, and community couldn’t be more different.
@chanchiyang what is your student looking for?
While UCI is close to Disneyland, that isn’t where a student will be going to school. It is kind of like saying that Berkeley students hang out in SF. They don’t.
Certainly, the reason a student goes to college is to receive an education. However, just like when they get a job, it is important to understand the environment and culture prior to enrolling.
My personal experience with UCI is that Irvine administration is hands off and bureaucratic. There is more of a sink or swim approach to how they deal with students. Davis administration is more hands on. They realize that students are young adults navigating things for the first time on their own and they are more likely to work with them and walk them through the process.
Davis has a friendly, close knit community. Students, TAs, professors and administrators (including the chancellor), live within a few blocks of campus. They go to the same coffee houses, restaurants, and community events. The primary mode of transportation is by bike. Irvine is much more of a commuter school. There are large parking structures and parking passes are awarded based on class rank and how far a student away a student lives. They even have a My Commute portal. 75% of UCI students live within a couple hour drive from home (UC Irvine Data Hub - Student Enrollment By). On weekends, a large percentage of students go home. The dorms and campus are very empty. Really empty. Sure, if your student doesn’t have school work, they can leave and go to the beach or Disneyland, but who are they going to go with?
Finding your people can be difficult for students at all college campuses. At UCI, non local students eventually end up meeting each other but it can be a pretty brutal freshman year.
Hey! Has anyone heard back from the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences? I’ve been a bit worried since I wasn’t in the “first wave.” Thanks!
My bay area kid chose Davis over Irvine. His high school doesn’t have a single kid committed to Irvine, but has many at LA and SD, Cal, SB and Davis with a few at Santa Cruz too. Our kids seem to favor Cal Poly SLO over them all.
It is hard to believe “His high school doesn’t have a single kid committed to Irvine”.
Did you verify your observation with the UC source school website?
Yes, back to 2019, not a single one. Smaller private school, but around 8 are admitted each year and no one enrolled.
I don’t have first hand experience with UCI. I personally went to UC Davis and my son is studying there right now. Your descriptions of both schools match what I heard about UCI and my personal experience at Davis.
But for the young kids that I know, UCI (Southern California in general) has a bigger pull than Davis because Southern California is generally painted as a vacation spot for families in the SF Bay area. Also, kids nowaday seems to talk about life/work balance and Southern California (in their mind) seems to provide just that.
Also, part of the college experience is to make new friends, so they can go to beaches and DL with “new friends”.
However, I “strongly” dis-agree that SF is a better place to hang out than Berkeley - because SF don’t even have the Boba day.
To all students still on UCD waitlist, don’t give up yet. S24 got off UCD waitlist for Aerospace Engineering 2 weeks after commitment deadline last year. Good Luck.
I assume you are aware that enrollment of less than 3 is showed as “empty space”, for example, the following high school shows systemwide enrollment as 17, but if looking at individual UCs, UCSB shows 6 and UCSC shows 4. The “missing” 7 students could be spread out to other UCs with no more than 2 students each. In the case of only one UC enrollment is showing as “empty space” and the sum of individual UC enrollment is less than SystemWide enrollment, the number of students enrolled in that UC could be calculated but not meaningful because it could only be 1 or 2.
Nope I haven’t either
