***UC Irvine Class of 2020 Admissions Results/Stats Discussion***

So true @CaliDad2020 Thank God governor Brown put a limit on OOS acceptances to 35%! Still though, i think that number should go down, especially as other OOS schools are much more strict for out of state than instate. I can’t find the statistic, but average acceptance rates for OOS under the UC system are higher than those that are in state (besides Berkeley, 19% in state vs. 17% OOS). I believe I heard OOS for UCI specifically is 20%+ higher in acceptance rate than for in state

@jackisawesome Yep - raise OOS tuition. Lower cap on acceptances.

I’ll move into the President’s mansion! If I can manage on the 9k a year car allowance.

@jackisawesome have you decided where you will be going to school ?

@CaliDad2020 I am shocked and saddened that your daughter didn’t get in to those UCs. Does she want to send an appeal letter? My son has lower stats so he was bumped down even further. He was supposed to be a shoe-in for Cal State Long Beach but was waitlisted there. This is a crazy year. Very sad considering how hard these kids worked.

@CaliDad2020 appeal! Those stats are amazing

On the plus side schools like UCLA and UCSD are going to be full of rich out of staters. Good news for all the girls looking to get engaged by senior year.

Nope @pleaseacceptme99 Deciding between University of Washington Honors, UCSB Honors, and UC Davis. Also, will send in my waitlist statement for UCSD today or tomorrow (already written just getting advice from all the people I can)

@wombat11 Yeah, the worst part is telling our kid, “yeah, we told you that the world is dying for women engineers and your teachers told you that and your counselor told you that and you skipped parties to cram an extra hour for AP calc and you pulled an all-nighter getting your team ready for science olympiad and well, we didn’t actually lie, it’s just that everyone EXCEPT UC is dying for women engineers. The UC just want to sell your seat to Matt from Massachusetts so Janet Napolitano can get new curtains in her mansion.”

She is going to appeal, but meanwhile she has to make contingency plans - and has awesome choices. She’s got a couple of schools that are super-welcoming and very good at what she wants to study. The only bad news is to our pocket-book.

I’m sorry for you and your son as well. The worst part is that the expectations are set at a certain level. Our D knew that even with good stats UCB and UCLA and even UCSD were competitive. But no one ever suggested to her with her numbers she would be shut out of all of those UCs.

Again, she has great choices and it’s pretty hard to turn your back on schools that are contacting you daily and giving you money to see if you will come while your “home” schools could care less. But if the appeal works (not optimistic) we’ll reassess.

Has anyone received an actual acceptance letter yet? I have been accepted OOS in Mississippi.

@GeographySage I haven’t gotten one and I’m in-state in San Diego.

@CaliDad2020 Heartbreaking. Well at least she got into some good schools. My son only got into his low back ups. He’s an A-/B+ student with a bunch of film awards - it’s crazy to me that that gets you nowhere now, especially with the out of state thing. My son seems fine with it. I’m the one who is upset (which I am trying to keep to myself). I think if he could redo this all over again I would convince him to apply more broadly (tip to future seniors). He was so determined to go to college in the LA area (we’re from SF Bay area) but if he knew he would only get into his bottom 3, I think he would have added a couple schools outside of SoCal.

hope this helps you all who’s on the waitlist http://universityofcalifornia.edu/news/uc-dramatically-boost-california-student-enrollment

@wombat11 Yeah, the best thing we did was cast a fairly wide net. It’s hit or miss.

Anyway, on to #2. No UC’s for her. Not worth the effort. I’m a defunder now. Starve the beast.

As a women in engineering, I can tell you we need more. Decades after I started working in engineering, the percentage of women has really not increased. I can’t believe your daughter was denied a spot to almost every UC! The UC system has sold our children’s seats to those who have money outside the state. It seems that the qualified California kids were a very low priority.

@CMUmechEalumna Yeah, it’s wack. But the great thing is that she has found all the women in engineering (and even a couple of the men) to be very supportive. I think because the numbers are so low, you all really look out for each other.

Again, she will be fine. Having to pay the extra dough stings for sure, but we knew we might be here and planned accordingly. We’ll scrape through. But others won’t be so lucky. I am convinced, btw, that the UC engineering “holistic” admissions criteria effectively maintains the 20 - 25% women admits intentionally, even tho it is illegal to take gender into account. I have no proof, but the % numbers are so consistent across time that I would guess a good stats person could look at the admits to applicant ration by gender and find that it was too regular to be random or not “fixed” somehow.

The raw number of female applicants has skyrocketed in some programs (UCB COE EE CS for instance) but the raw number of admits has not moved.

Oh well - a battle for someone more motivated than me. I’ll be out driving my Uber, paying for college!

financials are up on the UCI portal…

The portal is down!!! I can’t log in

Whoa I got a full ride. I knew I shouldn’t have even looked. At UCLA I have to pay 9,000. This is going to make my decision harder even though I was already set on UCLA

Received the admission packet today finally! I’m in-state from San Diego.
