UC Riverside Class of 2028 Official Thread

Congrats!!!

My daughter got accepted into 3 universities so far. Yesterday, she got an Early Acceptance into UCSC for her proposed Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major. And today she got accepted into 2 more universities: UC Merced for her proposed Chemistry major, UCR for her proposed Biochemistry major. She has to wait for 6 more UC decisions coming up this month.

We thought as a California candidate, we will get one UC but if we didn’t get in UC riverside which was safety so have lost all our hope. If we get rejected from all the UCs, what do we do? How does this Guaranteed UC work?

If the student is ELC eligible, the default campus is UC Merced.

The last of the UC decisions will be posted on March 28 (UC Berkeley). If an ELC eligible student does not get admission to any UC campus (waitlist does not count), their application will be referred to the UC Merced campus in April. The referral program is Count me in.

https://admissions.ucmerced.edu/count-me-in

Last year, some ELC eligible students were referred to UCR also but the majors offered were also limited.

Note that not all majors may be available for referral applicants but it is pretty easy to change majors after enrolling at UC Merced.

Thanks

UCR’s admit rate for CS has dropped down to 33% for 2023 so CS has gotten extremely competitive. I have already seen some high stat applicants waitlisted at UCR for CS. What was the alternate major listed?

At this point, all you can do is wait for all the decisions to be posted and you never know since the UC’s tend to be unpredictable.

Do you have the source for the admit rate by major? or admit rates for CS in general?

Here is the link: Admission: Undergraduate | Institutional Research

My son cannot get into his account to check he tried resetting password multiple times and so we checked the portal for all the other Ucs and he cannot log in either… anyone else having problems?

I was really hoping for my S24 getting into Computer Engineering at UC Davis. Considering that he did not make it into CS major at UC Riverside (he only got his alternate major of Robotics), now I am not hopeful of his chances at UC Davis next week.

Hopefully he will atleast get his alternate major at Davis (Math and Scientific Computation, which has a transfer acceptance rate of 60%. He is not a transfer student, but it gives us some idea of how competitive it is for freshmen applicants).

He really wants to take a gap year, and UC Davis is the only campus that would give him a year off without an emergency/serious situation.

Since Robotics is in the CSE department, it is possible to change the major to CS. But you should ask the advisor like the UCR admissions suggested. With the advent of AI, I would pick both if they are of interest to the student.

The UC Riverside’s decision is not predictive of the other UC Campuses chances since they each evaluate an applicant independently. You never know what the decisions will be so there is always a chance for a favorable response for UC Davis.

You’re right. I have been telling him that pure coding jobs are on the way out. I code for a living myself, and I have been reading the writing on the wall for sometime now. It’s only a matter of time before AI came for my job. Two kinds of jobs that I think will be hot in the not-too-distant future: Robotics, and AI Research.

Will housing decisions come in before the deadlines? S24’s final decision may depend on whether or not he gets on-campus housing.

Housing application deadline is in May after the SIR deadline and room selection does not start until July. Freshman that submit the housing application by the deadline are guaranteed on-campus housing.

Is that also true for SJSU (even for local residents)?

D24 is currently deciding between UCR and SJSU. Would definitely choose UCR if he’s forced to be a commuter for SJSU.
