My daughter also got admitted today into UCSB for preBiology major. But she had already sent SIR to UCD for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major. And she is still on UCSD waiting list though. Congratulations to every one who got accepted into UCSB today anyway :+1::kissing_heart:!

My son was accepted today too & has already committed to UC Davis for biochem/molecular biology. I think Davis will be better for research opportunities. What are your thoughts?

Which university is better for PreMedical students between UCSB and UCD? Please advise, thanks a lot GumbyMom?

My opinion is that both schools offer the resources for any student to apply to Medical school so it is more up to the student than the school which will make them successful.

The student needs a place where they can thrive academically, socially and personally. Medical schools are looking for students who are not just top academic students but also interesting, well rounded individuals with leadership and social skills.

I am not familiar with UCSB’s Pre-health advising program, but UC Davis’ Pre-Health advising is one of the best out of the UC campuses.

In the end wherever the student is happiest to attend for the next 4 years would be the best choice to be a successful Medical school applicant.

Similar situation here, my daughter sent her SIR for UCB. However, had UCSB been an initial acceptance, that would likely have been her 1st choice. At this stage in the game though, she’s mentally prepared for Cal and has a really nice roommate worked out. The difference between the schools, campuses and locations are all considerable… Also considering pre-med track, I worry about the competition at UCB vs UCSB… :woman_shrugging:

Congratulations to your daughter!

Take a look at the services offered at through UCSB Health Professions Advising and compare to UCD Health Professions Advising.

My daughter is still on waitlist but would seriously consider the option if admitted. Can anyone talk how being a later admit affects housing choices…

excellent question…

your daughter would be crazy to go to UCSB over UC Berkeley. Can you tell her I want to trade? I’m currently SB commit but wl-ed at Cal.

Daughter was accepted off the wait list yesterday. Not sure what she’ll do. She has committed to another UC school already and has grown to be mostly happy with her choice. She liked UCSB originally as much as any other UC not named UCLA, and I think an acceptance initially would have made a difference.

Just found this website and so thankful to have a group to commiserate with during this time.
Anxiously waiting to hear as well! My senior science major was waitlisted at UCSB. She has a backup in place, but UCSB is her dream school.
So hard to watch your high achieving and hardworking kid not get their “dream school.”
I almost wish they were test optional vs test blind, but unlikely to change anytime soon. So hard to be in the waiting game phase.
Good luck to everyone!!

Welcome to the community! We are in the same (waitlist) boat, and my kid is also a science major. Your words struck me as I feel similarly, our kids worked hard throughout high school to achieve good stats, only to be waitlisted by a dream school (and we’re not talking about Harvard or some crazy reach)- but a school that, had they applied to just a few years ago, they would have gotten in with the same stats and profile. But the number of applicants increases every year, and the competition gets more stiff. Your kid sounds wonderful, and I wish your family good luck in matching to the dream school!

Yes! We knew that the ivy leagues were a longshot as they are for everyone, despite the fact that the stats were there. We naively assumed that the UCs were more solid options.
