DD24 got decent merit based scholarship to UIUC engineering school today, 1 day after being rejected by UChicago. Cheers!

did you apply for it? Did UIUC inform you via email? thanks

Same here. S24 procrastinated on UChicago EA and did not submit, but his counselor said that he will likely be deferred anyways. He got admitted into all his other EA schools, but they are all target schools. Making us wondering if EA has any advantage at all.

No separate applications for merit based scholarships, it’s based on college application.

EA to UChicago is not as easy as ED1 and ED2, ED2 might be easier than ED1, in my opinion.

what is the likelihood of getting into uchicago if put on the waitlist?

from what I’ve heard its dependent on how likely they think you are to attend for the most part

Will they tell you your financial aid before you commit? Otherwise, what if the financial aid doesn’t work for your family? Is it just a verbal commitment or do you pay an enrollment deposit?

It is just a verbal commit only. So do not worry.

around when do they usually start contacting people/accepting people off the waitlist?

Son was waitlisted
public high school
36 ACT composite
9 APs
4.6 weighted, 3.95 UW
JROTC battalion commander, 4-year army ROTC scholarship recipient

i would assume based on past admissions cycles and other stuff probably after ivy day/april 1

There are different ways UChicago RD manages WL, both before and after LOCIs. Here is what happened to D23(unhooked): Was WL last yr, RD, mid march. TheUC rep CALLED her HS head counselor, completely unsolicited, 3 days later, before she even had started writing an LOCI, Said they loved her, wanted to offer her admission, but did WL because they didnt think she was likely to pick them in the end. They said once all her decisions were in , IF it was near the top and she was seriously considering then they would have a spot for her/give her some time to get more info or even her come out and see campus again before she would have to commit. The counselor did not tell her about the call and the offer of a spot if pursued, until after ivy day and all decisions were in. UChic rightly guessed she would have decisions coming until the end. It was not in her top 2 when she had all the answers, so she did not pursue it. The Salutatorian also was WL (but did not get into any T20s-D23 got into 5–so was likely not considered similar by AOs) , definitely was very interested, yet, no offer at all. UChic is known to do that type of WL management, ie starting very early by reps reaching out to selected targeted students, and then continuing the process through ivy day and weeks after.
There was no shortage of interest–she had met the rep when he came to the high school, toured, even had some correspondence due to really liking the school (it was in her top 6-7, she didnt ED anywhere). In other words, this is not “demonstrated interest” yield mgmt, it is UC knowing the high school and knowing that very top rigor/top-of the class kids at her private school usually pick other T10s, which they do, and which D23 did. So their model was correct. They have never admitted a kid RD in the last 10 yrs, even the unhooked tippy-top kids who get into multiple T10s. They admit a kid ED from the top 10-15% with top stats most years they apply(not many apply there ED, only 1-2 a yr).

D22 EA and, as expected was deferred, received lots of suggestions to ED2, rejected RD. I WAS in her top 2, but we expected that result given she chose not to ED2. She did EA simply because she was not ready to ED and I was not comfortable with committing bling since it was our first time through the process.

In any case, to be fair to the UChic, she was the only EA at her school who was genuinely doing so. All others were kids who had an Ivy ED, so UChic is not wrong. They have these kids number.

does this mean UChicago has a ranked waitlist?

Well most schools do. Who knows the details ? But clearly there are some sort of priority kids in each region.

exclusive uchicago class of 2028 admissions stats

the following data were disclosed by admissions dean james nondorf in an in-person admitted student reception:

  • no. of applications received: 43,000
  • acceptance rate (total): 3.7%
  • acceptance rate (rd): ~1%
  • acceptance rate (ed1 + ea): 5% (according to another post)
  • average sat: 1540 (well,
he said “5 points higher than last year”)

nondorf also stated it was, in his opinion, the strongest – and “kindest” – class he’s seen so far.

They only accepted 1,600 students this year. It was 2,408 in 2021!

That’s less than their number of students enrolled per year, before accounting for the yield.
