UCLA Engineering Q&A

For TBP, you will receive a letter and e-mail if you qualify. The only requirements are: 1) you are in the top 1/8th of your class (Junior standing) or 1/5th of your class (Senior standing) and 2) you must have at least junior standing (not necessarily 3rd year). The GPA’s depend on the average GPA of your class.

The minimum GPA for UPE is 3.5 (but that usually does not fall under the top 1/8th of the class).

My best estimate for the TBP GPA cutoff (minimum) is:

~3.6-3.65 = junior standing
~3.45-3.55 = senior standing

haha, I strangely never got anything from TBP, although i was near the bottom of the cut-off. My SEAS email is the same as a TBP alumni though, oh well.

hi. i had a few questions about the school of engineering scholarships. any responses would be greatly appreciated.

1) are these scholarships open to international students (for the ones that do not mention anything about nationality)

2) the requirements say that level of study (eg. freshman, sophomore etc.) depends on the number of credits. i have high school credit that makes me a sophomore, but i do not have a UCLA GPA. most scholarships for sophomores require a minimum GPA. so should i apply for freshman scholarships or sophomore scholarships or both or neither?

3) many scholarships mention that leadership and extra-curricular participation count. does this include high-school work?

4) what is the application procedure? is there an interview after applying or is it solely based on the essay, the application and the resume?

5) any tips/suggestions for applying.

thanks in anticipation.

Hello all,

I am an incoming transfer student and had two questions in regards to CS upper-div courses:

1) I was able to get CS 33 waived because I took a similar course at a previous college. How much of CS 33 is needed for CS 111?
2) I want to take CS 118 before taking CS 111, but noticed that CS 111 is a prerequisite for CS 118. How much of CS 111 is required for CS 118? Will I be able to get by?

Thanks all for the info.

From what I can remember, pretty much no CS 33 is needed for CS 111. CS 33 focused on architecture, assembly language (MIPS), and binary/hex/octal/etc, whereas in 111 you code in C. CS 35L had more content in CS 111 by far than CS 33 did.

Is it possible to double in Aerospace and Physics? I’m walking in with 60 units from APs if that helps.

I’m taking it with Reinman now. It’s no longer MIPS, its x86 (and some C)

It’s possible, but the AP units will not help too much.

Does the x86 compiler you use have some decent debugging capabilities instead of the POS previous classes had to use for MIPS?

Alright I’m making my resume right now and I’ve got an education section (gpa etc), coursework section (contains like the titles of my classes like “Circuit Analysis” “Logic Design” etc), and then I’m thinking a technical skills section and then a very short experience section. Does this sound good?

I’m a CSE major and I’m just trying to figure out exactly where I put what languages I’ve used. Because I didn’t know how to list the cs 31/32/33 courses in the coursework section because they don’t really have a meaningful title, should I just list in the technical skills section stuff like "C/C++ Programming, MIPS Assembly Language Programming, RC/RL/RLC Circuits, AND/NAND/OR/NOR/MUX Gates, etc) as bullet points? Or in the skills section should I write sentences or something.

Also, since that would mean my resume is just a bunch of bullet points, should I include a section called Projects and put in stuff like (“Implemented a text-based spreadsheet program in C++ using object-oriented programming techniques”) for classes like CS 32?

This resume stuff is confusing to me lol

The [UCLA Career Center](http://www.career.ucla.edu/Students/DropInCounseling.aspx) does resume critiques.

@imrightuarewrong

The UCLA Career Center also has a [Career Guide](http://career.ucla.edu/Files/SWF/UCLACareerGuide2009To2010_082409.swf) with a lot of resume and CV examples.

Double majoring is a waste of time unless you really want to learn both subjects. It won’t help with impressing grad school admission committee or employers. You’re better off picking one major and spending the extra time doing research.

Hello to Seaslab users here!
I’ve gotten Seaslab Disk OVER-usage warning several times so far, and I do delete things off my disk right away only to receive the warning again. To me, my disk now appears to barely have any file on it. I’m starting to think maybe it’s the Visual Studio 2008 I installed last year? It’s been baffling me =(. Do you guys go over the Disk Usage limit too? Do you have any suggestion for effectively reducing the disk usage? Thanks.

sudo shred -vfz yourentireseasnet_disk

Did you follow the instructions in the e-mail? If you log onto undergrad or grad server with the commands that are sent with the warning e-mail, you will be able to see which folder or file is causing you to go over the limit.

For me it’s usually the applications data folder that’s a problem, because that’s where the cache is stored for a lot of streaming video sites.

How’s this schedule for winter?

Math 33a
Math 33b
CS32
physics 1a

bearing in mind that I live 20 miles north and have to commute to school

Should I swap out 33b for a history GE or something? Would that be significantly less work?

Looks pretty normal.

I’d switch out Math 33B since CS 32 ate up a lot of my time though if you blaze through programming projects then feel free to take a heavier load.

History GE would probably take more time than math 33b…probably have to read a ton and there might be papers. Math 33b is just weekly homework.

is chem 153A with nelson easier than the other option?

and would 113a and 153a together be too much?
