UCLA Housing Thread

When I went on the housing tour they said that mini fridges are fine, but no full-size microwaves or heating appliances. Also, if you don’t want to buy a brand new fridge you can rent one from them for about ~$20 a quarter (split between 3 roomies).

In regards to alcohol, the tour guide (a petite 1st year nursing chick) told me that your not supposed to have alcohol in your dorm but everyone turns a blind eye to that sort of stuff unless you are stock piling huge amounts of it. Also, she said that when they do room checks they are not allowed to pick up or move anything, so if you have your contraband covered or concealed in some way there’s no way of them doing anything about it.

Personally, I’m planning on bringing a little hot plate and a pan so I can make eggs for breakfast. Who wants an omlet? =D

so hide your contraband…and make sure they cant smell it if it is extra “skunky” sweet part 2, what about being drunk on campus do campus cops look to get you in trouble or look the other way as long as you aren’t a safety hazard?

UC, you’re inviting me to your room :P

I hope none of my roommates are smokers/stoners. I hate the smell of it all (cigarettes, weed, bongs)…

bongs smell like ass if not cleaned frequently
cigarettes are w.e I can live with them around but not a fan
weed smells like wonderful especially those frosty nugs

@ DC

I spoke to the tour guide specificly about being drunk/buzzed/whatever around the dorms. She said that people usually come back from downtown stumbling all over the place and nobody bothers them, that is unless there is a reason for concern (i.e. your thrashing around in the bushes puking on yourself). Also, if you, for some crazy reason, end up in the res halls it is a little different because I believe she said after 10pm you have to check-in with the front desk for them to let you in and if you are too drunk (like unconscious/incoherent drunk) they cannot let you in. I don’t think any of the other housing options have you check-in after a certain hour (res halls are like this because they mainly house minors).

ucla housing thread—>proper bong care

“she said after 10pm you have to check-in with the front desk for them to let you in and if you are too drunk (like unconscious/incoherent drunk) they cannot let you in”

What the hell are you supposed to do? Pass out in the hall? O.o

^Actually, they call the ambulance to take you to the hospital. Plus, if they were to let you in and something went wrong, they are responsible. So they are just covering their own a$$ from a lawsuit.

Oh, ouch. That’s a $1000 taxi and a $1000 motel. That’s $2000 I’m not spending on hookers. Drinking IS costly.

sweet, wonder what 4/20 is like on campus smoking blunts on bruinwalk? taking bong rips at the statue gardens, puffin on a join walking down janss steps? that would be
awesome-o

they’d send you to the hospital!? that is ridiculous.

i think they only send you if you are belligerent/ need to get your stomach pumped, if you can act sober for 2 min checking in you should be ok anyways we are transfers and wont be in res halls soooo who give a rats ass

I don’t know that UCLA is a stoner haven. Although you find mainly north campus majors here on CC, the majority of students at UCLA are south campus engineers, scientists, pre-heath types (not exactly a ganja oriented community).

so, I live in Century City, work in Westwood (and sometimes at my store’s branch in Ackerman), and have been affiliated with UCLA tons of times throughout my life, soooo if anyone needs info about shopping/the Westwood area, I might actually be able to help. So ask away.

here’s what i know re: questions i’ve seen on this thread-

microfridges and minifridges are allowed, but having a fridge and a separate microwave is not. it’s because of the fire risk AND the increased energy consumption. there are microwaves in some of the plaza lounges. but yeah, you can just put a box over it during inspection. my friend has a little electric kettle thing.

the ikea in carson is not that far, maybe 25 minutes if you don’t go at rush hour. and there’s a Bed Bath and Beyond on Olympic. it’s LA- you’ll never be short on places to shop

they do take care to match up like with like when it comes to smoking- at least, that’s been what i’ve witnessed.

students’ cars: I don’t drive so this isn’t a problem for me. But let me tell you that once you leave Westwood or Santa Monica, public transportation is a b-tch. Blue Blus and UCLA buses are great; they run frequently and are clean and there are bike holders, etc. You can easily get to the beach and to Venice, Santa Monica, Brentwood, the Palisades, and some parts of the Westside. But outside of that you have to take the Metro. The Blue doesn’t really go east of Westwood Blvd, with a few exceptions (mostly Rapids) which sucks for me since I live just too far east to walk. If you want to go to downtown, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, basically LA proper, you have to take the Metro. Let me tell you, I may be a little white girl but taking the Metro for 8 years has opened my eyes to some janky-ss **. It’s cool during the daytime (except for that the buses don’t really run evenly so it gets annoying waiting for half an hour and then like five pull up) but at night it can get creepy. Especially since the only reliable maps are online. I’ll stifle the Metro rant before I get to the time I had to give official witness to the police because there was an assault at a bus stop where I was waiting. Long story short, LA’s a car city. You can get around UCLA and Westwood just fine, but you do want to know someone with a car to get you to anything out of the West LA bubble.

oh, and here’s a tip for parking when you guys visit: drive down Westwood to the ticket booth past the Reagan medical center, and ask the people at the booth for 20 minute pass to get into Lot 6 (it’s right in front of you to the left). Once they let you into the lot, you can pay at the parking machine and you can stay for at least two hours- longer if you come out to refill it. It’s just about actually getting INTO that lot.

oh and I’m sure everyone knows about “bring out the red” in the autumn- there’s a store in Westwood that gives you a UCLA tshirt for any shirt in Trojan colors that you bring in (we’re trying to get red and gold off the streets haha).

is anyone else going to transfer day?

@ UCcasualty
…that’s a bunch of lies. Who do you think possesses and cultivates the best stuff, if not the engineers, scientists, pre-heath types?

I guess there’ll be a plus to being packed in DT ahahah…

booo, is the campus stoner friendly atleast? like are people going to make a big deal about bud in general/ seeing smoke and such cuz that would be a big time burn I always felt people need to understand work hard play hard, you can still drink/smoke/party w.e and maintain a high gpa it is all about managing your time i was always under the impression UCLA’s student body as a whole understood how to balance social life vs academic please don’t tell me im wrong that would be terrible

Most of the lots in Westwood have labels that say you gotta pay a certain amount/hour, but with validation (and usually before 6, except the garage for Trader Joe’s - you just stamp your ticket through a machine in the store but you can park there whenever) it’s usually $0-3. Not so bad.

@DC. Maybe you should check out Santa Cruz… Hahah

I can’t I didn’t move across the country for a lesser school I came to california with Berkeley or UCLA as the only viable choices. UCLA is a huge school im sure i can find people who break the stoner stereotype and aren’t idiots

@mroblivious & DC

I’ll give that you could probably find some environmental or plant bio majors that are down, probably even some astronomy majors, but seeing as the south campus community is mostly work-aholic, bookworm asians, I’m sticking with my previous assessment. I feel like adderall is more common among this group.

In general, pot is a kind of whatever in Los Angeles. But this city loves its alcohol and cocaine. Actually, I bet you’ll find a greater number people who are more likely to take you up on a line than blaze.
