UCLA Housing Thread

Yeah, I’m definitely excited for the courses. I think I’m most excited for the research course!

Will we be living in Res halls? D:

Evan-
looks like we’ll be in Reiber??

For the 2010 Summer Sessions, students will have a choice of living on campus in a residence hall or residential suite, or off campus in the University Apartments. Please note that prior information indicated that Sproul Hall was going to be used for A Session (the first 6-weeks) and that Rieber Hall was going to be used for C Session (the second 6-weeks). Plans have changed though and now Rieber Hall will be available for the entire twelve weeks of Summer Sessions. Students who have already purchased a summer housing contract in Sproul Hall will automatically be reassigned to a room in Rieber Hall.

I had a bad feeling about that whole TSP thing… I think they were trying to pull one over on us. First off, if you have IGETC done there is no reason you should be enrolling in any of those courses they’re offering during the program because they won’t count for $hit. Second, if you still have a couple major prereqs to finish before your upper div., then you should probably take advantage of summer to finish them. Thirdly, UCLA doesn’t enforce prereqs to enroll in your upper div. over the summer so you could have taken any class you wanted. As far as how much aid they’ll provide you over the summer through TSP, it’s just as much as they would have offered any student enrolling in that same amount of units. Also, the counseling and other services I believe are available to anyone. My 2 cents… save your cash or spend it on something worthwhile.

What do you mean they wont count?

“Students enroll in two or three University courses that meet UCLA requirements for graduation”

[AAP Summer Programs](http://www.aap.ucla.edu/summer/index.html)

Also, in that $5,200 is housing and food, as well as every other expense. $300 to live on campus, take classes, and ease my way in to UCLA? Sounds damn good to me.

@evan

If you have IGETC you have already met those “requirements for graduation” they are talking about.

Even so, they’re 11-12 units that count toward getting your degree.

Well I think it depends on the specific student… I know a lot of students may benefit from the upper division writing class, the research class & for me personally, the Psychology class counts for my major… Research clearly is new for 99% of the new students. The majority of students will have some type of writing / research projects so I see it as a plus! Also my major only requires 50 quarter units but I need 80 something quarter units to graduate so these units will most definitely count towards this requirement…

TSP is not for everyone… :)

Do you remember what were the course numbers for the select classes… Because I know that anything under 100 is not considered upper div. GE.

188, 148, 175, 178B, 100W, Honors 101A.

100W is the writing course
175 is Psych
& Research is 101Honors I am pretty sure…

mkay, dumb question…acronyms for tsp and aap? I clearly haven’t been following closely enough…

Transfer Summer Program

Academic Advancement Program.

I’m sure you guys will still get a lot out of it since they are going to keep you busy for sure. 12 units in 6 weeks is insane, no matter what the course subjects are. However, I didn’t sign up because I felt like they were selling us things that were already available to us for free (like some of the student resources). Plus, I wanted to take some of my major courses (biochem… ugh… we’ll see how it goes).

Anyways, I’ll be there on campus with all you in Reiber. I move in in 3 weeks! =)

gotcha. anyone know about how the study abroad works?

wow! woo hoo!! Glad to see you stuck with UCLA. What is your major? Biochem?? Props to you! That is REAL WORK. I have a Gen Chem test tomorrow… :-/

I’m in the Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics (MIMG) program. I know… it’s a mouthful.

I wanted to fly in under the radar over the summer to try and establish some relationships with the science and research faculty to see if I can get into a research lab and, also, I’m going to try to get into a volunteer position at Ronald Reagan or David Geffen Med. A couple of tasks which will undoubtedly be easier to accomplish before the entire Bruin pack arrives for the Fall quarter. I’m excited!

Wow, UCcasualty, that’s intense! But very exciting that you’re moving in so soon! Its kind of annoying that we have to move out, and then move in 2 weeks later. Ha ha.

That is sooooo intense! I know who to ask if I have any questions about the Sciences… Congrats! That is a VERY tough program to get into…

You’ll have to update us & give us the inside scoop since we are moving in July 28…

^Thanks very much. I will let you know. I’ll post a thread after my first couple of weeks there, that way I can bust a few rumors and give you guys the heads up on what to expect.

Well, gotta go catch some Z’s… organic chem. test tomorrow, wish me luck.
