Thoughts on Marist vs. UConn?
tbd
@beachmama1 what about schools that don’t rank. My sons school doesn’t rank.
@tmac4101 Where from? Major? Relative cost? Preference in terms of size, location, environment?
unfortunate had lots of EC and national merit scholarship finalist . Large high school that does not rank
@Luke123456 IS or OOS? Major?
OOS, Bio major
other choices
@beachmama1 My school doesnt rank actually so idk but if I had to put myself somewhere I would say prob top 10%-15%. and thank you!
@Luke123456 Based on your stats, I would think you would be up for merit as an OOS student. It might be worthwhile to call your admissions rep to discuss. Even though your school does not rank, they probably provide wgpa ranges for the past few years in the school’s profile. Would that put you clearly in the top 10%?
thanks its unfortunate, loved the school, getting merit from other schools so may need to look elsewhere
Just got the letter. He got 18500 a year, leadership scholarship. No honors college. This made it uconn the first choi e.
UDel, Rutgers and UConn came in within 300-400 of each other in total cost. Rutgers is the only one who gave him honors college though. Now it’s decision time.
@jdcollegedad was the honors invite on the same letter as the scholarship amount.
Congratulations to all, Just thought I would drop a note and let you know that the engineering program at UCONN not only is it wonderful but it is incredibly difficult, I will tell you that It is on the lines of grueling and I am serious when I say this. My son is in the program he is junior and just be prepared because you are in for some ride. When you have heard through the years that engineering is tough it is beyond tough trust me!! They do not hand out that engineering degree easily I promise you. Not trying to scare any one but I would never have imagined this!! One day at a time…
@HSinLI My D received the letter at home, but I believe it was in the same letter. Checking with her now.
Interesting, D got into honors at every school she applied to (including Villanova), but not Rutgers (where her dad and sister graduated from). She also got top scholarships at all of them except Villanova, and nothing from Rutgers. 34 ACT, 9 AP’s, the rest honors, 4.1 GPA, in the top 10 students (out of over 300), tons of EC’s, 4 officer positions, 4 honor societies, varsity captain…
if merit is not used, will it be passed along?
@mrs806 You are absolutely right that engineering is tough beyond tough. I studied electrical engineering at Rochester in the late 1980s. We started with about 175 students and graduated 55. Second semester of freshman year we took a digital circuits course requiring students to build a complex digital circuit on a breadboard with different chips and wires connecting different terminals to get the desired outcome By the time we were done, the wires looked like spaghetti. Junior year, I took a computer engineering course where we wrote a programming language interpreter. I can’t tell you how many all-nighters these two classes caused me. And there was a signals and systems course where the instructor would fill up chalkboards of proofs where I was entirely lost for the entire semester. When you get through an engineering course, you feel like a survivor and have a close group of friends who helped you through it. It is a calling! Don’t do it for the money!
