I believe there is an honors program and you are automatically considered as part of your application.
I am not 100% sure, but my vague memory suggests it was sometimes in March after RD were out 3 years back for us. If you read posting from previous year threads around March timeline, certain you will find them.
Heads up to all acceptances UIUC is raising the tuition and expanding the Illinois Commitment to 67K from 61K, 10% increase. This is affecting instate students only.
UIUC has a James Scholar Honors Program, which is by school (LAS, Engineering, etc.) and a Campus Honors Program. I believe that the Campus Honors program comes with some amount of scholarship money. I’m not sure when Campus scholars are notified, but I got an email and letter in the mail about being a James Scholar around last week.
@MM6785 @Artist2233 James Scholar doesn’t provide any scholarship. My S is a James Scholar.
My son is a Chancellors Scholar (Campus Honors Program) and it comes with a $1K yearly scholarship. No separate application. Awarded to approx 125 students. Notified in April (regular decision).
Not to discredit Campus Honor Program, but to my knowledge hardly any engineering kid enrolls to that program.
I just got notified that I am a James Scholar recipient. I know that at Ohio State, where I also got into the Honors program, there is specific housing that Honors students need to live in. Does UIUC have that same policy? Also, what are the benefits of James Scholars, since the program doesn’t seem to have any scholarship money associated with it?
Its primary benefit is priority class registration. Depending on the college you are accepted to that can be very useful benefit or virtually none for any CS related discipline.
I wonder why eng majors wouldn’t be in CHP? My son is a BioE major. With being first to register for classes, special honors classes, money for summer research, small scholarship, etc there’s really nothing but advantages.
Also Chancellors & James scholars have separate floors in an LLC dorm which is optional. One of the newer dorms so it’s quite nice.
Those benefits sounds great on paper, but it boils down to whether one is really needed for it. E.g. LLC is good for 1st year, after than most of kids move out to private apartments. That LLC is not coming for free, benefits for LLC can be easily achieved at other dorms as well. For BioE, I know my younger one was admitted 2 years back, but he picked NU over UofI, while elder one is continuing CS journey. Kids are getting far better scholarship than 1K for CHP, so one has to wonder taking that extra load of scholar classes worth any rewarded amount? My point is simple those benefits don’t fit all profiles even though one is granted that scholar label.
True, it’s what kids want to put into their education. My S likes learning and enjoys the small honors classes so he feels that CHP is worth the extra work. I have another son who graduated from NU, too, in computer engineering. But my BioE son decided that he wanted the additional track options at UIUC.
very small world.
Daughter accepted EA for (sociocultural and linguistic) anthropology. Classified as OOS, but we moved here in August/Sept, so we just need to submit our documentation for her to be classified as in-state.
@sapmom congrats! My dad was in the linguistics department for many years!
Check your email guys! The RD decision comes out on Feb 28th
Accepted directly into Computer Engineering
Out of state, Florida
Asian male
3.3 UW GPA, 3.7 Weighted GPA n/a rank
35 ACT, 1530 SAT
No AP freshman year, 2 ap sophmore year, 6 ap junior year
3.1 weighted gpa freshman year, 3.5 Sophmore, upward curve into 4.6 weighted junior year
Won state competitions in violin(11 years) many times
Completely redesigned school’s engineering club as president

only 1 honors society as my gpa was too low
So don’t lose hope!
It doesn’t seem like there’s anyone else on this thread from FAA, but to add a data point about scholarships for OOS students, my dd received a $10,000/year dance talent award. Still doesn’t make it low enough to be in real contention, but she was very excited to receive it.
Did anyone receive the FA package? My DD received a scholarship, but we’re still waiting for the FA package.
