UIUC Class of 2024 Discussion

@cessna172 1550 SAT, NMSF, 3.99 UW

When people list their stats it’s really helpful also to know if they are in or OOS. Thanks.

@bh8690 – Could you share your stats? Curious what it took to get an EA Chem offer! Thanks

Decision: Accepted

I attended high schools in Shanghai, China for 10-11th grades and in Iowa, United States for 12th grade, with very different grading scales, curriculums and student populations. I find it quite unable to calculate an exact GPA nor provide class ranks and percentiles, but I have stayed a straight-A student all throughout high school.

Stats

SAT I (breakdown): Single sitting in sophomore year, 1560 = 770 (EBRW) + 790 (Math)
SAT II: Single sitting in junior year, Math II (800), Physics (800), Biology E (800)
TOEFL: Single sitting in junior year, 116 = 30 ® + 30 (L) + 27 (S) + 29 (W)
AP (place score in parenthesis): Single sitting in junior year, Calculus BC (5, AB subscore also 5), Physics C Mechanics (5), Physics C E&M (5), Computer Science A (5)
Senior Year Course Load: AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP English Language & Composition, AP US Government, AP US History, Dual Enrollment Linear Algebra
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): N/A

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Computer Science (first choice, waitlisted), Systems Engineering and Design (second choice, admitted)
State: Iowa
Country of Origin: China
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Asian/Chinese
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: $40,000 - $60,000
Hooks (URM, first-generation college, etc.): N/A

Reflection

Strengths: Life experience of attending high schools in two countries, decent test scores, senior year course load (I take every AP course offered apart from those I already tested out of, such as Calculus or Physics), research and publishing experience, a decent number of extracurriculars compared with others in the Chinese National Curriculum
Weaknesses: My identity as an international applicant from China itself, less-than-ideal extracurriculars, sloppy essays (especially the “why CS” one), no major awards

I have made a GIANT mistake in taking Illinois CS as a surefire safety, and I do not even like CS that much! The lesson: apply only to a major you are GENUINELY interested in. Not because everyone else is applying to it. Not because the mean salary after graduation comes in six figures. Colleges will know it. Maybe Illinois did and decided System Engineering as a better major for me.

@pllilcy Are you suggesting waitlisted in 1st choice, but accepted into 2nd choice?

@PPofEngrDr Yes, that’s how it works… I am guaranteed a spot in Systems Engineering, and Illinois will put me into CS whenever space becomes available.

@pllilcy interesting, does it mean you are still considered for CS RD? or If someone may not accept CS by May 1st, you will only be considered then.

Accepted into computer engineering!
UW: 3.7
W: 4.8
SAT: 1500
Out of state

Definitely thought that I would not get in as my stats were comparatively low to others

@slytherinriddle Congratulations! Can you please share you credentials, GPA W and UW, ACT, SAT? Will really help. My D got deferred. Would like to understand the stats and chances in RD. Any information will help.

For what it’s worth, Daughter got admitted

OOS
Sat 1490 act 32
Just 1 Ap.
In IB program
Some ecs. Nothing stellar.
Admitted to LAS

As mentioned earlier, won’t be considering though, unless by some miracle UIC comes back and offers something which comes close to what we’d be paying for our InState colleges as tOSU does.

@PPofEngrDr I do not really know! But I suspect that it may be the latter case you talked about. Here’s the school’s response on this topic:

https://www.admissions.illinois.edu/FAQ/admitted-freshman#Eight

"You were strongly considered for your first choice; however, we simply didn’t have room for all qualified applicants. You’re still considered waitlisted for your first choice. If space becomes available in this major later on, we’ll let you know even if you’ve declined your offer.

We strongly encourage you to stick with the major you were admitted into after enrolling at Illinois. If you’re interested in transferring to another program, we recommend you work with your academic advisor to learn the requirements and timeline needed to do so. If you were admitted into the Division of General Studies (DGS), you’ll work with an advisor to craft a unique schedule and declare a major before your junior year."

Wow, so many incredibly high-performing students here getting rejected, deferred, or wait listed. I know you’ll land somewhere good, and while I also know this is no one’s safety school, it is still really disheartening to hear.

Congrats to those who made it, too.

Accepted into computer science!
I’m in-state, white girl
Sat: 1510 (super scored with 800 math, 710 English)
Uw gpa: 3.77
Weighted gpa: 4.33

Senior courses: art, regular English, astronomy, economics, AP computer science principals (I already took apcsa and data structures (next highest after apcsa)), Multivariable calc and linear algebra, AP physics 12

Extracurriculars that probably helped me:

  • I did research after my junior year that had me work with python
  • I taught little kids how to code over the summer
  • I was a part of my schools girls coding club since sophomore year
  • been in a coding class since sophomore year
  • taken engineering courses at my school for 2 years

@Hillyyy73 Congratulations!

I already posted but my son was deferred instate for engineering.
GPA UW 3.7 W 3.97

His 2 friends from HS who applied for engineering and the other applied for computer science were both deferred as well. Kind of depressing.
