UIUC Class of 2024 Discussion

I also have a question about deferral – Does a deferral mean that UIUC has totally filled your major (and second major if applicable) with candidates that were deemed “better” and now you wait to see who declines (in other words, a “waitlist” situation). Or does UIUC hold a certain percentage of spots open within each (or most) major(s) in order to see what the RD applicant pool looks like, and then fill those open spots in March with the “best” from the RD/deferral group. Am I making sense? Is deferral really waitlisted?

@aewlmom

No, Deferral is giving you a genuine another shot at admission process during RD cycle alongwith RD applicants, While waitlisted is you are on mercy of someone already accepted declines admission, which is for highly sought majors very very slim chance as there are others waitlisted in similar situation, happens after 1st May of acceptance deadline.

@PPofEngrDr – Thanks. That’s what I thought / hoped. However, the UIUC verbiage cited above in Post #135 regarding those who were accepted to their second choice major suggested otherwise to me (“You were strongly considered for your first choice; however we simply didn’t have room for all qualified applicants. You’re still considered waitlisted for your first choice”). I guess it was the use of the word “waitlisted” in that context that threw me off.

Does any know if you can reapply for RD if you are declined during EA (for CS)? For example, my son was recently declared a state scholar and his first semester grades are on track for all A’s or A+ (including 3 AP courses). I would think adding this to his application may help.

FYI - W GPA 4.2, 8 AP courses, SAT 1380

S20 accepted to Gies!
OOS 1470 SAT
I can’t believe the high stat kids on this thread getting deferred and rejected. Best of luck to all during this stressful time.

@plato98 I assume you mean RD, not GD. If schools thinks your son is competitive enough, they would have given either acceptance or deferred, not declined. The extra credential is not big enough to improve chances as there are already enough qualified candidates who are deferred and not declined.

Thanks for the quick feedback! UICU was my son’s #1 preference but fortunately he was accepted at every other school he applied. It’s still unfortunate because for the past 2 years all he would talk about is UICU. He’s taking this a bit too personal. I’m struggling to answer his questions about what more could he should have done. I can’t remember the last time he received a B and he’s in several EC’s at school (including NHS).

@plato98 being a parent certainly understand emotions, not getting into a desired school is not end of world. This is just EA, sure your son had applied to multiple schools for RD and so wait until all decisions are known before making a decision.

I have a question and idk which thread to ask in

So I was admitted for CS (first major choice), but I was wondering about double majoring.

I want to double major in CS and something with business (Business Unassigned was my second choice major that I believe was not even evaluated).

Does anyone know how I would go about it?

@popbizzy as per https://admissions.illinois.edu/FAQ/admitted-freshman under Majors section it states “If you’d like to double major or add a minor, you’ll need to speak with your advisor at New Student Registration. He or she will be able to instruct you on how to proceed.”
Alternative as per ECE site, https://ece.illinois.edu/academics/ugrad/advising-tips/dual-degree.asp, dual degree requires 30 additional hours, assume it is same for CS as well.
