Just read a post here that says the computer science drop out rate is 24%. Is this true? Any references? Is there CS advising or tutoring?
I would recommend contacting the department directly and ask them a few questions. https://www.cs.umd.edu/contact
I don’t see me calling them; too awkward. I will be going down with my son who was accepted in April…might make some inquiries then. Just curious to see if the CC community has and first hand experience with this.
Yeah, sometimes it’s easier to get info here, less awkward. But for what it’s worth, I emailed the Physics department and received an informative email response of all my questions, including some stats I was looking for.
@CDK It does had a 24% drop out rate right here http://www.ourumd.com/class/CMSC131
@LustinJack12 that figure from the link you gave is for a single class, not the entire comp sci program/major…students “drop” classes all the time due to schedule changes or wanting to take a different section/ teacher.
@CDK while I don’t have any info on comp sci per se, where did you see the post about the 24% drop rate?
FYI, it’s possible there is some confusion. At Maryland, unlike many schools, there is both computer science and computer engineering.
The drop out rate for engineering in general is higher than most other majors, so I am not sure if the person who posted that realized there is a difference between comp sci (which falls under CMNS (computer, math & natural science) and computer engineering (which falls under Clark school of engineering). That drop out rate could very well be for computer engineering. Within the engineering department, electrical and computer engineering fall under the same sub-department.
@maryversity I agree, however CMSC131 is the beginning of the computer science class sequence. Im a computer science major at UMD right now, and I have spoken to the an admission counselor and he did tell me that the dropout rate is high. Computer science is one of the hardest majors at college park due to the fact they rely heavily on math. I know a lot of friends who thought CMSC was going to be easy but ended up dropping the class after mid term week. Most of my friends who drop CMSC 131 do not pursue computer science anymore and have decided to purse information systems or their alternative majors.
My daughter (bio major) took 131 as an elective. It was a pretty hard class for her, but she didn’t have any programming experience prior to this class though. She worked very hard to get a B.
