Also, here is a very helpful link for waitlisted students regarding the spring start option.

My problem with the wait-list is that they cannot guarantee that he will get into Mechanical Engineering. I was told that it is undeclared. Therefore RIT it is, at least he’s guaranteed the Engineering program there.
I’m embarrassed for my alma mater. I love UMass, but the Admissions process has been handled very poorly.
I emailed admissions and just heard back. They say “all” forms of decisions are still being communicated and will through the middle of April. Acceptance, rejection, and wait list. There is still a glimmer of hope for some of us!
I got waitlisted but immediately put myself on the list so that I can get in. Also I am going in the spring without a doubt so am I allowed to go to any of admitted day affairs this spring?
Good for you! You should be very proud of yourself. Good luck
Instate and someone said 6 nothing yet:(
I got waitlisted too. A bit disappointed as I really wanted to go to the school in the fall. I don’t think I’ll be considering the spring enrollment option as I want to stay at whatever school I end up choosing. As of now it’s WPI unless I get accepted from the waitlist, we’ll see how the cards fall. Good luck everyone!
@WalkerC you just heard right now?
@umasswaiting Same here. No news is good news?
Guess I’ll be waiting longer wait listed
Daughter just got the email- wait listed. The applicants in her school got the email a few days ago but her just now.
disappointed
Still waiting to hear. Son wanted mechanical engineering program and apparently there aren’t that many engineering students graduating. He is moving forward and going to 3 admitted student days in the next couple weeks at other colleges where he got into engineering. But UMass Amherst is his first choice. Very disappointing for many but a big congratulations for those that did get in. The competition is tough so you should feel proud!
@1momto2boys: We are in the same boat…my son wants mechanical engineering also. Would it be difficult to get into the engineering program? What other schools did your son get into? Thanks
My son just got the wait list email! He will accept the spring semester acceptance as a back up and go to his second choice school and hopefully love it and stay there but will have Umass as a backup. Good luck to all who haven’t heard.
@petiesmom My son has a 3.8 GPA and got 1700 on his SAT’s. His 2 friends had similar scores BUT they applied “undeclared” to the engineering program and got accepted.
My son is wait listed at UMass Lowell and WPI. He got accepted to UNH, Fairfield university, western New England, Hofstra, Quinnipiac (sp?), Florida institute of Tech. Denied at Georgia Tech (no surprise - reach school!). He didn’t like Tufts and Rensselaer but they have good programs. Who knows if he would have been accepted anyway!?
His guidance counselor told him UMass were “safety schools” but apparently not anymore. Competition is harder because college is getting so damn expensive! But I don’t have to tell that to anyone on this forum!
My son got around 15k merit scholarships at the schools he’s considering. Fairfield, Western New England and Florida IT.
I hope some of this helps. I know this is a stressful time. Good luck to your son.
Guidance Counselors need to stop selling UMASS as a safety school and making kids believe it’s inferior. What is inferior is the debt that so many young people take on and have to pay off from ages 22-32. It’s the whole joke about kids living in their mother’s basement into their 30s. This problem only gets worse if these kids who take on this debt decide to go to graduate school. My first is now deciding between UMASS and University of Maryland even though she got into Northeastern, her first choice. I know some here are upset with UMASS about a January instead of a Fall admission i just hope that when they send their kids to these private schools instead waiting four months that they aren’t putting their own kids in debt. UMASS is getting more selective and much of that relates to the value, but it also makes UMASS a better school. The dynamics are changing.
Speaking to the “Umass is a safety school” thing. My son is now a junior at UCONN majoring in Mechanical Engineering.
When he was a senior in high school his guidance counselor told him that UMass engineering would be harder for him to get into than UCONN’s engineering school. I was skeptical but he was right! My son got accepted Undeclared to Umass Engineering but got accepted into UCONN’s program.
And my daughter is just finishing up her freshman year at Isenberg School of Management. They are rejecting kids with GPAs of 3.7!
Accepted to my second choice major biochemistry. Applied for engineering but did not get in. I heard the cutoff for engineering this year was 3.9 gpa for regular decision and if under you were not considered for it but who knows.
