UMass Amherst Class of 2020 Decision Thread

Since the Accepted Students day is full for tomorrow, will there be another one or no? Should I just go anyway?

@GetLucky Go anyway. There is nothing gained accept for the $6 lunch voucher by being registered. Parking is free and you will not be stopped from any presentation or tour of the major of your choice. It is a good event and they explain the Spring Orientation. We learned a lot more than when we just did the tour on a visit.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how difficult the competition was for Isenberg this year? A few of my friends applied to there and I was hoping to be able to dorm with them, but I was the only one in our group to get in.

Still waiting here…it’s lousy that you do everything right and others drop the ball. Hard for me to feel the disappointment for my son. He, on the other hand, is still excited about his future. Love his confidence. Don’t know where he is headed…he is captivating and driven. He just says no worries mom. Thank you to everyone who has posted here, it has helped to see how this process was handled.

@heavyheart2 Sounds like a great kid! Where else did he get in?

I’m so glad I started this thread as it seems like it has been helpful to folks, even if it was just a place to vent a bit. An update on my son’s personal situation. He was accepted quite a ways back to the Natural Science Exploratory Track. He applied for Computer Engineering, though his actual preference was Computer Science and Engineering but UMass doesn’t have that as a major. His first choice was Ohio State and he was chosen into the CSE major so he has accepted admission there. We have visited the campus and it is everything he wants in a school. He will obviously be assuming additional debt going there since OOS but ultimately it’s the right decision. Good luck to all!

We still have had no word from UMass. Is there anyone else out there still waiting? Thank goodness my child has other options but it’s hard to believe after receiving his application in October they are still working on a decision.

Hey! Yes I am still waiting, I am an international applicant and applied for Regular in December.

Still waiting…

Yes, my son is still waiting–but I am not optimistic, due to the lack of communication on the part of U Mass

My son is also waiting for a decision (In state) and we attended admitted students day today without an acceptance. Before the large presentation in the Mullins center we visited the admissions booth and made a connection with a senior director of admissions which we plan to follow up on Monday. He said we will all hear this week. I didn’t push him on why it was taking so long to get a decision but it was reassuring that we will all hear this week.

The initial presentations were very strange but as we broke away and met with my son’s major (Building Construction Technology) it became apparent that UMASS is a great fit for him and its his #1 school. We met with a professor who did a great job of walking through the major and classes my son would take over the first couple years. There was only (1) other family within this specific major so it was extremely personal. My son’s #2 choice is Purdue and we are scheduled to visit on Friday but we are both hoping to cancel the trip if we get a yes from UMASS.

@Stevedivot Fingers crossed for your son. My D was also considering Purdue but they didn’t give her any financial aid (except loans) so that doesn’t look like an option for her.

@BladeHunter I was at UMass acceptance day today and found out that the average GPA to get into Isenberg this year is 4.04.

@supergirlsmom My son checked Spire this morning and got the good news. He will be going to UMASS Amherst in the fall and now we don’t have to go to Purdue. Our son is very happy and so are we. We already have a D in the midwest (UW Madison) so its nice to have one local.

Got waitlisted but wondering do they ever take anyone the waitlist and will they tell me if I don’t get in from the waitlist? They don’t explain the procedure like if a spot opens up what exactly happens

Just notified UMass Amherst that I will not be attending so that someone on the waitlist can get their spot at a school they adore. Very happy I can do that.

That’s just a rumor that the cutoff for engineering RD was 3.9. My S has a lower GPA (3.7ish) and did get into his first choice engineering major (electrical).

Congrats to your son @Stevedivot !

Just got accepted on spire for undeclared exploratory natural sciences. applied for engineering, but whatever. I already paid my deposit at another school on Saturday

it’s my 5th school accepting me into the school but rejecting me from engineering: Virginia Tech, Purdue, RIT, Umass, and stony brook (well I got in there for engineering, but it was confusing).

@umasswaiting According to the common data set, which you can see at the College Board, https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/college-university-search/university-of-massachusetts-amherst by clicking on applying, in 2015-2016 here are the wait list numbers:

Offered place on wait list 5,450
Number accepting place 1,278
Accepted from list 26
