Has anybody received an opportunity to apply from UMass to study abroad in London their first semester. It seems like a new program and only up to thirty students will be enrolled. They receive regular UMass credit and are assigned on-campus housing when they return. It seems interesting, but I am somewhat skeptical about the reasons for why they may be implementing it.
My son got that āinvitationā as well. Essentially if you apply it looks like you are committing before the traditional deadline. Since it is only for 30 kids I canāt imagine it is to relieve pressure on housing. Itās too small for to make much of an impact. It may be a way to lock kids in earlier.
I agree, but with only thirty kids, locking them in early doesnāt do much for their bottom line given the size of the freshman class.
No, it doesnāt. They may be piloting this program to gauge interest and see how successful it is. If it works well (and is appealing) maybe it will be expanded.
Must differ by school and/or guidance counselor. Never received any reminder (for anything).
Is it for a particular major? My son hasnāt seen anything (CS major). I donāt think he is interested either way, Iām just curious. Especially with such a small group
In the email it said it was being offered to Humanities, Isenberg and Social Sciences.
Does the SPIRE issue have to be fixed by calling IT? I have already activated my account, and reset the password 5 times, but it does not work. IT department says it is closed until Monday so I am wondering if thereās anything else I can do.
I had to call. They said it requires a fix on their end. The good thing is that they knew exactly what I was talking about and what to do.
It is 1 hour and 40 minutes from the campus to Boston. How frequent is the bus there to Boston?
Iām not sure. Youād have to check with the bus lines. The only times Iāve been out to UMass, weāve driven (we live in MA). I know Greyhound and Peter Pan serve that area. Where would you (or your student) be coming from? I believe there is Amtrak (train) service through Northhampton to VT to the north and NYC, Philly and DC to the south.
I just wonder how to get to Boston easily if live on the campus.
Although the drive is only 1 hour 40 minutes (or so) a bus trip is closer to 3 hours because of all the stops. You can certainly get to Boston, but it would take a while. There are probably better options than taking a bus (although the bus would be cheapest).

I was pleasantly surprised to find that we are now able to register for the 3/27 Destination Day , where we previously got a message that the event was at capacity. Just wanted to update this post in case anyone sees it - didnāt want to steer anyone wrong.
Thatās great! We did it last weekend (my son is comp sci) and really enjoyed it. So excited he has found his place!
Any indian who got into Umass?,pl text
Congratulations! Thatās a good feeling. We are still trying to make decisions, and anxious to see UMass Amherst since weāve never toured it before. I think the visits are super important.
My husband attended UMass way back when, but I hadnāt really had a chance to see it until a couple of years ago when we toured with my eldest (he ended up elsewhere). The tour helped me immensely. It felt so big until they explained itās like a dartboard. Library is the bullseye, academic buildings in the first ring, dorms the next ring, athletics the outer ring. Helped a big school feel smaller!
We have since toured it several times (on our own, as a tour with my twins, and now for the accepted students day). My son feels so at home there already. And the food is actually good!
Hope you have a great experience!
We did a Designation Day at UMASS Amherst earlier in February and my D22 fell in love. They did an excellent job of giving the facts and not doing a hard sell. My D22 has already turned down other big schools because she would chose UMASS over them. The visit definitely helped her solidify that decision.
