UNC Chapel Hill 2024 Transfer Admissions Official Thread

hey everyone,
i was also waitlisted from unc last year and am applying as a junior transfer this year!
my stats:

  • applying as a poli sci major
  • transferring from unc charlotte
  • college GPA: 4.0
  • high school gpa: 4.2 (weighted), 3.8 (unweighted)
  • 1 LOR (it’s a very good letter)
  • have an work experience, joined law society club, volunteer club, and two other extracurricular clubs, play an instrument and give lessons, and volunteered at a law firm up until school started this year.
  • all essays have been reviewed and I’ve been told they are very strong
  • i was accepted into NC State as a transfer for fall '24, but Carolina has always been my dream school.

do my stats seem good enough? especially having been waitlisted last year…

I think you have a pretty decent shot of getting in. One of my friends who goes there said that UNC likes to see extracurriculars, so it’s good you’re doing something related to a career. I think the average GPA of incoming transfers is around a 3.7-3.8, and since you have a solid 4.0, I think you have a pretty good shot.

I just called and for those who were missing a LOR, the required LOR is the one that might not show up, but it is a part of your academic evaluation. (Don’t worry!!)

Thank you so much for calling!

hey everyone, I’m currently a freshman trying to transfer there for my sophomore year
My stats:

  • applying as a bio major
  • transferring from Shaw University (NC resident)
  • College GPA: 4.00, I didn’t submit ACT Scores
  • high school GPA: 3.99 (weighted). finished 16 out of a class of 110
  • 2 LOR (my first was my counselor, who is a current graduate student there, and the other was my English teacher I had in HS for three years)
  • have work experience, volunteer hours, president of the math club, played three sports, and started a chess club
  • I was unable to apply during my senior year of HS because of family circumstances; I took care of my dying mother for a year before she passed away
*strong essays about the circumstance that caused my GPA to drop my senior year and my work as a church youth leader
  • Hispanic student not sure if I had to mention that
do my stats seem good enough?

Same I’ve been so nervous since I submitted. I just don’t know what my chances are which are making me more nervous

im wondering what the stats are. like how many people applied? I’m sure its just bc I’m anxious but I feel like I’ve seen way more posts(on here and reddit) of people applying as a transfer than last year but idk.

Yeah I am not sure either. Last year 3654 students applied, and 1535 were admitted which is roughly a 42% acceptance rate.

Super nervous for friday, hoping the best for y’all

I’ve heard not to take that statistic at face value. A bulk of students transfer through their community college’s guaranteed C-step program which boosts stats for instate transfer

Oh that’s right. I forgot about that guaranteed admission pathway. That makes me more nervous now :joy:

Do they factor c-step into admission statistics ?

According to the Admissions Advisory Committee report, in 2023 109/899 enrolled transfer students (12.1%) were participants in the C-Step program. The percentage gets smaller when you consider how many students were actually accepted (not just those enrolled). That brings it down to less than 1%. While it is factored in, I don’t think it should be a major concern.

Sorry, typo. Less than 10%.

That is actually super nice to know, I mean I can also tell a lot more people in general have applied this year so…yeah

Nah, I’ve also seen a good bit of posts about it. Some posts I see is someone who is insanely competitive as well, like having an entire non-profit and raising a lot of money for their causes. It could just be confirmation bias too though! Like you have to think that thousands of people apply and I have seen ~100 posts about transfer students to UNC (and not all of them were the insanely competitive ones I stated earlier). It may just feel like a lot.

You also have to factor in that some kids are applying to UNC as a safety school :joy:
