UNC Chapel Hill Early Action Class of 2030 Official Thread

That was not hte case for my kid. She got in over some ranked higher than her who were test optional. Her high score (33 ACT) and slightly lower GPA appealed to them I guess.

Great!! happy for her. May I know her rank?

If 10+ APs, 10 honors and 4 DE all A’s except couple is not rigor enough and 1560 SAT is not good enough, not sure what else is. The point in our case is .1+ gpa is hard to cover to be in cutoff point for rank consideration (may be 20% depending on highschool) . We were not aware that rank matters that much. Otherwise my child could have beefup 4 to 5 DEs in summer and be in within the threshold. My child was working in summber to earn for college and realised that her rank is fallen behind and took 2 DEs last year to cover. But wasn’t enough. If you are in or around the rank threshold with decent rigor and score your kid has a chance. To put it in numbers .1+ GPA would have helped him take atleast 12% jump in out case due to amount of competition we have. But .1+ GPA difference with all the rigor and lack of easy DEs be reason for denying a child a seat? Basically kids are put in rat race.

UNC in state acceptance rate is much higher than UVA in state. UNC in state has a 40% acceptance rate. UVA in state is almost half that. UNC out of state is lower than UVA out of state due to the legislative cap in North Carolina.

Yeah, this sucks… I am guessing you all are in an uber competitive district. We found in our district (competitive, but not Wake/Mecklenburg), higher test scores with slightly lower gpas got in. But who knows. Mine also had deep commitment to one activity in a multi-faceted way, had a lot of volunteer hours, leadership, was a Morehead Cain nominee and has a parent who works at a state university, and had stellar recommendations, so maybe that mattered?

She was ranked in the top 9% of her class.

Attending CIHS in NC where all thigh school level courses are honors and the remainder (roughly 18) to wrap up the Assoc. in Science degree are DE.

Too early for UVA OOS.

UVA released ED decisions for both IS and OOS applicants, they don’t release on different dates for IS and OOS. Accepted results were 25% and 23% respectfully. Both rates will most likely go down for EA, but nothing like the UNC OOS acceptance rate, which I think hovers around 8%. Basically if you’re OOS, you have a better chance at a top 20 school. My D26 was accepted to ND Mendoza, but I doubt she’ll get into UNC KF.

Just to follow up on the other thought (General Admission w/o BSchool guarantee). My S24 (Purdue 1st year 3.97 in Daniels School of Business) and applied to KFBS from UNC during first semester (the old pathway) - was declined for spring start. He had a 3.85 this fall at Carolina In Economics, has several different applicable work experience/internship plus leadership roles and will apply again in Spring for a Fall start - but it’s a long shot. He’s made acquaintances with multiple folks with 3.8+ GPA from Carolina who also applied and were denied. I think he ā€œknows a guyā€ who got in, but just one…

My D25 is at UVA and her default is also Econ, which I think is a great major and it’s great to hear your son has many opportunities. What UVA does better than UNC is that anyone can get a Business Minor there, there’s no application process for it. But UNC having an assured pathway is much better than UVA where everyone must apply to the Bschool during their first year and last year only 43% kids got in. I really think my D26 will choose a school where she has an assured pathway to a business school, even if she likes other schools more.

I think KF is still about 40-50% admit when they apply, and few get in assured, so it’s pretty similar.

My child also has tons of ecs that showed long commitment in volunteering, music and science. What you said make sense.

That seems to matter I guess then.

In comparision DUKE doesn’t even recognizes class rank in their common dataset. It is blank for that category. It is strange each renowned university measures students with different scale.

UNC is a state school and by law NC public schools have to rank, so it’s more easily used by UNC!

My oldest is a KF grad (old pathway). She had several friends who did not get in and fell back on the Econ major. They all ended up in full time job roles similar to her (corporate investment banking). So your son shouldn’t worry about an Econ degree from UNC. She also has a good friend who graduated with the master’s in accounting at UNC (5yr program), worked a few years in accounting, hated it, and pivoted to a job in corporate banking.

My younger daughter did the same thing. Chose a university with an assured pathway for finance, secured the same summer internship program that my older daughter got and was offered a full-time job in corporate properties at the same bank my older daughter started at (younger daughter is dual-degreed in finance and real estate). I was relieved she did not have to go through the stress of having to get into KF - and she’s not a big fan of econ so I’m not sure what she would have done if she didn’t get in.

Seeking confirmation that the ā€œspecial opportunitiesā€ like honors and pre-admit to business are pretty much over at this point through ea admissions. Has anyone ever heard of a student getting an update on these ā€œopportunitiesā€ while waiting to commit? I assume not, but just curious if anyone has any anecdotes. I know you can apply for honors once you’re admitted so that is not what I’m asking. Anywhoo, hope everyone had a nice holiday with their families!!

It is not uncommon to be denied the first time from KF and get in the second time. Tell him to meet with the people at KF to go over his application and essay and let him know where it is/was lacking and where there can be improvements. A friend’s kid was denied the first time with a similar GPA and after he was denied he met with someone in the business school. They gave him multiple pointers and he did everything they said. I believe they were particularly helpful with the essay. He was admitted the next time around.

Curious, has anyone received their admit letter in the mail yet?
