UNC Chapel Hill Early Action Class of 2030 Official Thread

what does wake co means?

which county?

ours is opposite. he got into USC and but missed UNC

Well guys it doesn’t matter now :sob: but I got in to UNC just now! But the thing is I was curious and went to my common app to see what I wrote again bc like idk I just wanted to see what they saw and made them say yes to me ! And when I looked I realized FOR THE FIRST TIME since submitting that I copied and pasted the same answer for the ā€œDiscuss one quality ā€œ question for the the ā€œdiscuss an academic topicā€ question . I’m just shocked as to how tf I got in since I essentially didn’t even answer their second question…ig I had good stats? Did they even bother looking at my answers.

I believe you can ask to see the Application Review but not for some period of time. I know there are students at UNC who go to look at their app with notes and scores on it, but that was the year following admission.

I feel for your S26 (and you) - it stings.

We are now 3/3 on our kids being wait listed at UNC (which is almost as close as you can get to a No as you get until you get the actual ā€œno, we’re fullā€ decline letter in the summer). I’ve considered not paying North Carolina Taxes for a year or two out of spitefulness. :grimacing:

Our D26 has stats similar to your S26 4.4x WGPA, 13 AP/IB, 15 Honors, 33 ACT / 1450 SAT, Leadership (Captain / Co founder-President of school club), Volunteerism (Amnesty / Key Club / Asst Coach Soccer), Athletic Participation (Cross County / Track), Work Experience (Business Internship) - pretty well rounded. (One of my degrees is from UNC -so its a lesser legacy connection). I’ll blame WAKE Co compression of highly qualified kids but in the end, we just don’t know.

Our other two kids were similar but not quite as well balanced in total.

However - We now have a D22 graduating from UT Austin this semester (early) with a 3.9 GPA there and looking at Masters/Law options and S24 second year at Carolina with a hybrid Purdue/Carolina 3.97 / 3.85 GPA. I highlight this because while UNC is a Superior value for InState, a highly ranked/reputational school, and a pretty campus - it’s not like being declined by UNC keeps good kids from being successful – it just might be more expensive to go elsewhere. Your S26 is more than academically prepared to go elsewhere and crush it, because it’s about your sons ability not the schools ability.

And, if you S26 really had his heart set on UNC it’s still quite possible - you should look at the Transfer situation, as historically, kids who perform reasonably well in College (1-2 years) have a pretty good transfer acceptance rate to Carolina. (Hovers around 38-42% acceptance with college GPA of around 3.7-3.75).

Good luck on your S26’s other opportunities - it will work out for him, just differently than he may have imagined up to this point.

and uncommonly/rarely they will first wait list - and then offer a denial with a Sophomore Start Guarantee.

I wonder how much harder the business school will be to get into with the increase in direct admits? Has anyone seen or heard any info on this since they announced this new development? Might be the deal breaker for my son, and I was excited for him to maybe join his sister.

The school has expanded- new and a beautiful building. Latest info I’ve seen was only that the majority will be direct admits. The process getting in once your there at UNC has always been difficult, and honestly no specific pathway aside from prerequisites being needed. They work outside of the UNC mandate for in state students, thus the total of in state and OOS can be anything they want. I didn’t expect a direct admit. Have a sibling a few years back with 99 th percentile score, Val, leadership and wasn’t chosen. Ended up going to Duke which was first choice but yeah, very competitive each path getting into KF

I don’t think KFBS has really directly commented on how this will impact things - between the expansion in class size (with new Bell Hall Building) but switching towards Assured pathway for college admits. However, it seems unlikely to make things -easier- to be admitted as a current UNC student - and it was already quite competitive under the ā€˜old’ format.

Yeah. The word was that UNC KFBS did this assured pathway so they could be in line for the Highly Qualified / Elite candidates in consideration for other schools that did Direct Admissions (guarantee) versus schools that wouldn’t guarantee BSchool admissions.

So I think your caution and evaluating other reasonable options that offer direct admissions is warranted.

Absolutely! It’s very smart on their part. My daughter is OOS, just got into Notre Dame’s business school and IF she did get into UNC she would only seriously consider it if she got into KF too. Otherwise it’s too much a gamble when she already has an assured program.

And hahaha, it was hard for me to call my D25, a DD, darling daughter, last year, so D25 worked better for me.

This is our take on Indiana-Kelley… It’s unfortunate for D26 that they decided that -this- was the year to go from their two stat threshold automatic Direct Admissions (GPA / Test Score) to a more ā€˜holistic approach’ in admissions but given the DA guarantee versus the standard pathway, and that standard pathway has become even more restrictive with core courses and nothing lower than a B+ on any course… it’s either DA admission guaranteed or becomes a non-starter pretty quickly.

UVA is in my daughter’s Top 3. Fingers crossed!

Wake County

UVA is also heavily dependent on Class Rank Just like UNC. If one could not get into UNC due rank, I am not sure if one could get admission at UVA. Did anyone got into UVA (OOS) and not into UNC.

If you are OOS for both, you most likely have a far better chance of getting into UVA. UVA does put a strong emphasis on rank, but only because they want to see mostly As, but they also really care about the rigor of courses. If you are in-state for either, UNC might be a little easier. I don’t know what the in-state acceptance rate for UNC is, but for UVA it’s about 23%.

Sounds good. Even UNC doing the same it appears. It sounds like class rank + rigor. But how can they distingish among school competitiveness? Some schools can be very very competitive.

Other things appears to matter only after these two categories. UNC ranking limit is also appears to be around 20% ranking. May be if an applicant is around the border then otherthings could come into play.

It appears its all boils down to ranking. In our case, 0.1+ more GPA was all need to be accepted. Your exceptional scores or ECs only matter afterwards. Maybe there are too many in EA pool. We probably would done better going regular as most of the high rankers would have gotten in EA. For kids it is difficult to process it.

They know the schools in NC well, so the AOs can determine if your rigor is strong for hte school. Plus schools give a fact sheet with the app that shows the gpa and number of AP courses you can take.
