Again, no. No one can have a weighted 5.0 GPA on a scale where an unweighted A = 4 and the student gets a +1 bump for some specific rigorous courses, because it is not possible for a student to take all +1 courses. That is why UF states an A in a +1 rigorous course is worth 5.0 on a 4.0 scale. My bold for emphasis. This is not an opinion, this is how GPA calculations/weightings work. You can PM me if you want, but students/parents should understand the facts.

I understand. I’m simply saying - the most someone could have - they can’t but if every single class they ever took was an AP - that would be the only way.
It’s simply a # to measure against. If you want to say a weighted 4.0, that’s fine.
Sometimes we see kids say they get .5 for an Honors and +1 for an AP and they have a 5.3….well that’s not possible.
Nonetheless. we are thinking the same thing. I like to think it’s on a 5 scale where no one can be a 5. I can say it’s on a 4 scale…it’s the same thing.
If UNC is using the +.5/+1 and I don’t know that they are, I put up the 4.5/4.7 of UF as a comparator.
We are using the same method.
At work, we have a metric vs. 100% but it can be doubled - you can earn 200%. Works says it’s a 100% scale. I personally use a 200% scale.
The underlying #s are identical - so when you note a 4.5, so do I too.

Yes, NC schools use the +.5/1.0 and you are correct, it is reported on a 4.0, so when you look at the Common Data set, the average gpa is about 4.49. I posted this before for people to see the 97% who say they had a 4.0 is weighted since the average gpa is above a 4.0. The 3% below that are likely private school kids without weighted GPAs or athletes.

some where in the common app when we submitted it ask for whether it is to the scale of 4 or 5. we mentioned 5. Would this affect our application? We did this after checking with counselor.
you are right average is 4.49. but it is listed under section c12 not c11. so you can not apply the description on c11 to c12.
They will see your transcript and understand. Not a concern. You aren’t the only. Many will interpret this way. This is why they get a transcript.

They do this for a living. They also have a school profile. You needn’t worry. You’re panicked over nothing. I promise. Just because common asks doesn’t mean it’s even looked at. There’s a reason you sent a transcript.
No, it won’t affect your app, so don’t give it another thought. This is not a required question on the common app, so those reading this thread later…you don’t have to answer this question. Colleges will rely on the transcript (or Courses and Grades section or STARS, whatever course/grade info they require.) Good luck to your student!
Right. These are pros and they also get the school profile exactly for this reason. They can’t completely trust what you put down so they verify using their methods. Unless your student is the only one applying from a brand new school, chances are they’ve seen your school on their radar before and know how it compares.

Are you at an NC public school? All are weighted the same per NC law, so admissions will know. If you’re super worried, call admissions, but as others have said, the school profile and your transcript will make it clear.

You might want to mention this to your school counselor for the future. The counselors should send something to all the students to clarify this. My daughter’s counselor sent out an email to all the seniors saying they should choose a 4.0 scale on the common app. Her school also gives 1.0 for AP/DE and 0.5 for Honors, but also a 4.3 for a 98% or above. But I don’t think this will hurt your child at all. The AOs know what they’re doing.
