UNC Chapel Hill Early Action for Fall 2024 Admissions

I would certainly think so but I guess there’s an element of crap shoot to all of it. The stats are in your favor!

The biggest factor for instate kids is what school you are from and who else applied from that school. That’s your competition. They are required to take kids from all over the state and some places are much more competitive than others. Other factors matter as well gpa, rigor EC, first gen (which is huge now) and race used to matter. My 2022 kid was rejected with 1530 (800 math) / 35 ACT, 12 AP including AP bio, chem, physics, calc BC, stats etc. but he only had a 3.7/4.3 gpa. Other kids from his school who went TO, with much lower rigor but higher gpa did get in.

Very good points and that’s crazy about your kiddo! 12 APs and 1530. Geez. I guess you’re right about local competition probably being the biggest single factor for in-state kids. Low rigor, higher GPA for a peer is frustrating for a kid that worked their butt off.

Yes, but some districts have much higher admit rates. Competitive schools in Durham, Chapel Hill and Wake (for example), have a much higher percent admit rates than other districts (or even schools within the district). In those schools, I think being outside the top 10% or not submitting test scores can be a bigger factor. But, 45 out of 107 kids from my kid’s school of 450 kids in a class school got in last year, so a 42% admit rate, compared to Alamance County that had a 29% admit rate. Chapel Hill Schools admit TONS of kids, far more than anywhere else. Not only do they have a high admit percentage, but they also have far more applying.

So I guess being a legacy also shouldn’t be an asset either? That gets far more kids into schools they aren’t really qualified for than first gen.

Agreed

Does the school send out email to the parents and kid when the decision is out?

i think to the applicants only

I am sure applicants will get an email. That has been true for all UNC schools that have announced so far.

fwiw, if you really have your heart set on UNC, you can always try to transfer as a sophomore. This was the strategy of 2 kids from my S21’s year (we’re from CA) who didn’t get in, but were able to transfer a year later and they both love it.
I agree with @Thorsmom66 the acceptance rate for OOS is going to be lower than 7% this year. UNC jumped in the rankings to 22nd (from 28th) and a lot more ppl applied this year (s21 is a sophomore now, took a gap year, d24 is applying now)

@lolosworld I meant to respond to you :slight_smile:
you have great stats, my son had the exact GPA as you, also PVSA gold, also bio/premed (he’s currently a sophomore). I really hope that you get in! Good luck to all

@lolosworld here’s what I posted incorrectly to another thread - there’s always the option of tranfering, I do hope that you get great news today though.

I believe the 82%/18% in state/oos mandate only applies to FY undergrads. I wonder if it is easier to get in as a transfer if oos, if that i what a student really wanted.

FY = first year
