It’s usually 3-5pm, more accurately I will say between 3:35-4:35 but I can’t narrow it down more
I have no idea about NCGS, but the data from the UNC system linked to above by MACXC1009 (Workbook: db_freshmen) would seem to indicate that for the last two years going test optional hurt your chances. If the data are correct (and they don’t match the CDS, so it’s hard to figure out what is or isn’t included), NC residents who submitted ACT Scores had acceptance rates to UNC-CH of 84% and 71% in 2023 and 2022, respectively. For those submitting SAT Scores, it was 76% and 70% (some of those are likely the same students, who submitted both). For all in-state applicants, it was 41% and 44%, and if we could separate out TO, those rates would be even lower. In 2023, the average ACT among all applicants who submitted ACT scores was 30.8, and the average SAT among all applicants who submitted was 1410 (again - pre-2022 numbers don’t match the CDS, and UNC-CH is a year behind in posting their CDS so we can’t compare 2022 or 2023, so take these with a grain of salt), seeming to indicate that even submitting test scores below those was a benefit (though I don’t know what your kid submitted).
Does anyone know what time they wiped the portal basically clear last time before decisions came out?
I’ve heard the portal started to change about 2 hours before decisions were released, but I’m not exactly sure.
That would make sense. That’s porbably how long it takes to upload all decisions.
Decisions were sent at 4 pm last year. I know this because our school ends later than that and kids were opening decision letters and crying/celebrating. Not fun for those not admitted.
which time zone?
It’s eastern.
No question being from the Triangle, Triad and CLT and a competitive school is arguably a disadvantage … there is no fixed “geographic dispersion quota” but based solely on merit 90%+ of the incoming class would come from those three areas. My son applied 4 years ago with 34 ACT, 10 AP classes including Capstone, 4 years marching band and leadership, fencing. In fairness his GPA was 4.2 weighted which was below the average slightly. Got a straight no EA, not deferred or waitlisted. But he went to a highly competitive school where probably 150 kids applied and in his class I believe 15 or so got in… it varies every year of course.
The encouraging story is he is went to App State in the honors college and, barring catastrophe will graduate with university honors, history departmental honors, a 3.89 GPA and has had a great college experience including leadership in their fencing club. I’m a UNC alum and it chapped me a bit at the time (he was my first to go through the application process) but I am a lot less stressed about it now … all our kids will be fine!
UNC only does accept reject right? no defer
Yes, the three possible options will be accept, reject, or defer. I think there also might be some transfer pathways but not totally sure.
Here’s a link to their decision types.
Decision Outcomes
ADMITTED
If you’re offered admission to Carolina, you’ll have our help as you decide whether Carolina is right for you. We look forward to introducing you to life at Carolina.
CAROLINA GLOBAL LAUNCH
If you’re offered admission to Carolina as a Global Launch student, you’ll have the opportunity to study abroad during the fall semester of your first year, and then enroll at Carolina in the spring semester.
WAITLISTED
If you’re invited to join our waiting list, we’re here to help you chose your best option. It’s likely that we won’t know if we can offer admission from the waiting list until after the enrollment deadline of May 1 (for first-year students) or May 15 (for transfer students), so we recommend that you reserve a spot before that date at a school that offers you admission. Explore Frequently Asked Questions about the waitlist.
DENIED
There are many paths to Carolina. If your application is denied and your heart is set on coming to Carolina, then we invite you to apply as a transfer student for a future application year. We appreciate your continued interest in Carolina.
sounds like no defer option.
So its admit, global launch, or deny.
They also waitlist – EA and RD I believe.
Yeah. Although global launch seems kind of cool tbh
Under 4 hours!
I agree. The only downside I can see is not starting off on campus with the rest of your class and having the traditional college freshman bonding experience. That would be either a complete non-issue for some or a deal breaker for others I think.
There would probably be a strong bond between all the ones that went to Global Launch though.
How many do they accept thru global launch?
100% and those tight, small group relationships are really desirable imo. The group I think that would struggle the most would be kids who are super into sports and wanting the Tar Heels sports experience as a major part of their coming to UNC.
