Definitely - what major is she considering? My son is a sophomore there as a non-STEM major and does not find it too too overwhelming. His brother is applying as a chem major and I am not sure if he will get in and if it is even a good fit - he does not do well with stressful events.
hi @hickorymom I have a son who is currently a sophomore Bio major (which is really Bio-chem b/c they have SO MANY chem requirements). It is hard. And very much a grade deflation for STEM classes, even more-so for the the 100 and 200 âweedoutâ foundational classes where the curve is rather tough.
Thereâs a saying for Chapel Hill: we work hard/play hard, except for those poor pre-meds, they only work hard
my kid got in from CA. he was a Robertson semi-finalist, he had ED-d Duke (and rejected) and got into UNC+honors college. Looking back, it was the best thing thatâs happened to him. Todayâs is ED day for many schools and I remember how insanely devastating it was for him to not even get a deferral. And now heâs having the best experience. UNC is hard through if youâre STEM. Good luck to your kid. Happy to answer any other questions you might have (I have another one whoâs going through the process and doesnât have a shot at UNC whatsoever
my kid was a Robertson semifinalist. My understanding is if you are a semifinalist for either Robertson or M-C, you get in.
my understanding (based on our own family experience and a couple of others I know) if youâre a semi then youâre in.
Carolina has a high success rate for their premeds but many believe the reason is so many are weeded out.
I completed residency there and many peers were UNC grads who both loved & hated their premed yrs.
thatâs amazing! the med school is ranked in the top 10 this year for primary care. That would be a dream come true for my kid. He has a long way to go.
Thank you for this helpful input! This is my guinea pig child. Figuring things out as we go. Steep learning curve to all of it.
Congrats on raising a young person whoâs obviously bright and more importantly, hard working! Enjoy the journey.
UNC CH Early actions results are being reported to students ?
Sounds like a good sign if your son is being prompted to file the necessary docs for need-based aid. Their scholarships & financial aid page (under âDeadlinesâ) states that they will only review and process CSS and FAFSA applications if the application is admitted. Seems cart before the horse to nudge financial aid materials if the application has been ruled out. Just my two cents anyway. Thanks!
Not that I know of, I believe the date for EA decisions is by Jan 31st. I was talking about my first kid going through the experience. My D24 is also applying now, but I donât think has a chance, being out of state and not as high in her stats
Thank you for this insight - I have heard the phrase without what appears an important caveat!
No, Jan 31st or perhaps the Friday before at earliest.
I just assumed it was sent to everyone who applied. It didnât seem like a targeted email, but who knows!
Oh, ok. Perhaps I misunderstood. Iâll go ahead and get the CSS app in. Many thanks and best of luck!
Did all applicants receive the âHappy Holidays - weâre in the office until xyz if you have questionsâ email today?
We received the parent letter several weeks ago and today my daughter got this email. Our son didnât receive anything like this last year and was not accepted so weâre kind of wondering if these communications mean anything. Probably not, but still curious.
We did
My son got this as well OOS.
My daughter received the Christmas email. It probably went to eveyibe who applied.
