UNC Chapel Hill Early Action for Fall 2024 Admissions

Really interesting. For our school, more than ever applied last year and more were accepted. Wish I could see stats of those kids, though I guess the number admitted lends some look. Class of about 400, 47 were admitted. Guessing one has to come close to top 10% of class to be in. (And I am guessing not all in the top 10% applied, but most probably did.)

That is interesting. Wow, your school must be strong academically, and I wonder if a majority of those students submit scores. The thing I find most fascinating is the actual number of students submitting test scores. It’s very low and when you look at in-state students who submit scores, their odds of being admitted increase significantly. Hoping this data point holds true.

I don’t think the majority submit scores. My daughter said a lot of people she talked to didn’t submit. She has a 33 and it was easy to decide to submit. Lots of her friends were in the 27-30 range and weren’t sure. And it’s funny. Lots of people say our school isn’t strong academically, but I think this points otherwise.
Is there a way to see those who submitted scores and were admitted? I’m going to poke around to see. And yes, I would hope mine who has a 4.45 gpa and a 33 ACT and all the ohter things should get in pretty easily. But who knows!

My son got an email a couple weeks ago saying to go ahead and submit it if you have financial need and that some scholarships, not all, are tied to financial need. Or something like that.

DS got that too - in state.

I’ll preface this by saying, I get that college is a challenge and I wholly expect my child to work hard. I am curious if there are any current UNC parents who have a child that has experienced grade deflation in stem classes/biology/chem? I’ve read mixed reviews on this and am currently waffling with prestige and stress levels vs being a big fish in a smaller sea at a less prestigious public university. At this point, my D plans to pursue PA, OT, or PT school after college and we’ll find ourselves in this same boat 4 years from now. There are so many things to consider in this whole process. Just really curious if any of you all have experience in this regard and have anecdotes that challenge this theory. This is our first child going through this whole process. She is the guinea pig.

The Common Data Set shows percentage who submitted scores but not related to who was accepted. In 2021-2022, 15% submitted SAT scores (25/75 %tile range was 1330-1500) and 60% submitted ACT scores (25/27 %tile range was 29-33). We are OOS and my D submitted her 31 ACT.
Also, very wide disparity in gender: 1,733 enrolled males, 2,944 enrolled females (freshmen).

Yes. I’m not sure if it’s grade deflation per se but they need to be prepared for likely lower grades, lack of curve, etc is very real - especially in the chem department (but other departments as well). At the same time, not a moment of regret - lots of life lessons and opportunities.

My son was a semi-finalist last year for M-C he made it to the finals but did not get it. He got accepted to UNC EA and the honors college. They said super rarely there is someone who doesn’t get accepted. Congrats to your son!!! Takes a lot of hard work to get there!

My son last year got nominated by admissions for the Robertson. He skipped the first round and started as a semi finalist.

Thank you for sharing. Did he matriculate to the honors college or to another school?

He went to another school.

Yes I realized I made a false assumption, I didn’t know the timing of the semi-finalist notifications so it makes sense now that anyone nominated from admissions is bypassing the first round, which in hindsight makes sense too. Thank you for confirming - filing away for future knowledge!

What are her odds of being accepted? I didn’t realize how crazy it is to be accepted until after we visited last summer.

OOS
4.0 unweighted GPA
36 ACT
Rural High School in the midwest
Took all the AP classes they offer - Calc, Bio, Chem - and several Dual Enrollment classes
Wants to major in biology or environmental science
Many school activities/leadership (like everyone else applying)

I don’t know if anyone can answer this accurately. The acceptance rate in UNC Chapel hill for OOS is almost the same as the acceptance rate of ivy leagues(~8%). Academic stats are good, if EC, essays and recommendations are great, there is probably a chance. Good luck!

I would say yes there is definitely grade deflation in the STEM classes at UNC. My daughter is a junior and getting good grades, but man, it’s been stressful for her. My current high school senior is waiting to hear from UNC but even if she gets in we’re not 100% sure she should go. The fortunate thing is that she is not planning to be a STEM major, so maybe her experience would be less stressful.

Thank you so much for this honest input. I really wrestle with this. I want my child to learn and grow but not be completely stressed out. We shall see. Thank you for detailing your daughter’s experience and good luck to both your kiddos!!

Midwest likely helps, coming from Maryland and Va is almost impossible because of the number of applicants. I know a student who got into Princeton and Columbia and not UNC (from MD).

My son has a 4.5 weighted GPA, AA from community college, he is a competitive skateboarder and has started his own company. He wants to double major in economics and entrepreneurship. He also teaches skateboarding to young kids at a church run park. He is in state which helps a bit. But he is not your typical high schooler so not sure if that will hurt him

Thank you! Good luck to yours as well!
