Ummm, your child should be the one opening their own portals with decisions unless they gave you permission to check them.
My kid who is a ROBERTSON SEMI-FINALIST was flat-out rejected from UNC just now. And was flat-out rejected from Duke back in Decmber during ED.
I know the admissions offices are separate from the Robertson decision-making process, but all I’d read had said they work closely together. You’d think they would avoid choosing a semifinalist (one of only 100-200 semifinalists from all the literally tens of thousands of applicants to the two schools who are considered for Robertson) who wasn’t going to be admitted. She’s completely devastated.
Wow, that stinks. I am really surprised.

That’s crazy. I think back in the day it was much easier to assure the Robertson/morehead nominees but with so many more apps everywhere it’s not working. They are going to need to revamp the way this works! I’m so sorry for your daughter.
Everyone said that while it was technically possible to be rejected from both schools as a Robertson semi-finalist, they’d never heard of it happening. I kept telling her not to get her hope up, of course, but frankly I’m really, surprised, too. I heard Robertson worked hand-in-hand with the UNC admissions office. My kid thought her semi-finalist group interview had gone really well, too. She’s OOS. Dangit. This is kind of awful. And I’m the adult!
OOS waitlisted here which feels kind of like a win based on the number of apps. Although my daughter feels rejected anyway ![]()
We’re also very low-income (as in, on SNAP benefits low-income, not middle-class poor), and despite trying to keep a level head and not get hopes up, secretly this had turned into the big hope. UNC. Dangit. I think maybe my kid will be taking this better than I am, ha ha!
Does she have some other options? ![]()
So far, only American University, but they are asking $55,000 per year in tuition, which is out of our reach, by a longshot. Something else will come up for her, I’m sure! This is just very hard. Despite knowing she could still be turned down, the Robertson thing just gave her hope. Thanks for the supportive words! Having a bit of a mama meltdown over here.
S25 admitted OOS. WGPA 4.7, SAT 1540, strong ec’s, strong essays, strong LORs.
I still havent received an email from UNC that my decision is ready and when I log onto MyCarolina it says that “You have not yet started an application using this account.” My common app was definitely submitted and downloaded by the college, and I even got a registration email from UNC after I applied in October to activate my account. Anyone else in this position??
My daughter was just accepted Global Launch to Costa Rica! So glad to hear it was a good experience for your son. My daughter loves Costa Rica (she lived with a host family there last summer) so she is excited. When he got back to Chapel Hill, what was his dorm situation? Wondering where they stick these kids.
We are also OOS, applied EA to UNC and RD to Duke. I hope your kiddo got good news today from UNC, and that we get good news from Robertson soon!!
For those of you accepted Global Launch, what were your stats?
OOS 4.6 GPA, no test scores, 49 college credits, class president
S25 waitlisted OOS. 5 of his friends who applied were rejected. Last year’s nearly 11% admission rate from OOS waitlist gives some hope. Ideally though he gets into UMD and he would likely drop off the waitlist then.
11% does give hope. I didn’t see that on the 2023 Common Data set. Was that your reference? Thanks and congrats to your son!
S25 Rejected. OOS, 3.8UW, 4.2W, has owned his own profitable business for 5 years, 4 year varsity athlete, leadership roles, solid essays, strong LOR’s, test optional.
