My DD got accepted, OOS.
I heard Kenan Flagler and Honors come out later. Also waiting for their decisions.
My OOS son received an acceptance email today. No mention of an honors program that I think that he applied to. He has applied broadly to colleges via Regular Decision, but this is the first one that we’ve heard back from.
He is a solid student -
1530 SAT 6A/6R/8W
4.00 uw / 4.90 w (1st of approx 450)
National AP Scholar - he will have approximately 15 AP courses completed by the end of senior year (I don’t remember the exact number). By the end of junior year, he had taken tests for only eight of them, scoring 5 on seven and 4 on one of them. He is taking three more exams this year. His approach is to take what he can handle and do well on so he can devote time to other interests.
Other than taking SAT practice exams at home as well as some Khan Academy online, he did not do significant test preparation and didn’t feel that higher numbers were worth pursuing. On the other hand, his friends that did more intensive test preparation typically scored 1580-1600, with 800 on Math II, Physics, etc. As such, he is not a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist (he was commended). He did well on SAT subjects taken on Literature and US History (iirc) but don’t remember exact scores and know that he didn’t submit them to UNC. He has strong opinions on standardized test taking so only submitted the subject scores in applications where it was recommended or required.
He excels at writing. His various college essays have been a pleasure to read.
He is president or captain of various school academic groups that he has participated in since 9th grade. Most advanced to the state level, where he or his team have various wins. A couple advanced nationally/internationally. He has exhibited leadership in his school activities, dramatically increasing student participation in teams or groups that he’s led.
He has outside of the school athletic pursuits that he spends significant time on, and he had a meaningful and productive internship with a legislator for the summer between junior and senior year. There were many things left off his applications too, including years playing piano, with scholarships awarded.
His letters of recommendation are likely outstanding.
Both my wife and I are Asian, and our income is middle class.
