UNC Student Body President Murdered

It is raining very hard in Chapel Hill/Durham today…and a sadness has also descended. My son is at Duke and K’ville and the big Blue game between the rivals is tomorrow…midterms just ended. It will be interesting to see how the loss of this wonderful young woman is referenced tomorrow.
Duke lost a superb promising graduate student to a death by bullets just a few weeks ago just off campus in his apt. We always thought Chapel Hill was safer…but then, I live not far from Virginia Tech…and we were always under the illusion that kids from the DC corridor were safer when their parents left them in quiet Blacksburg…my nephew was in the dorm where the first two students were shot.

“Sometimes I’m not sure I could survive such a loss.”

My parents have. I am certain I could not.

Update from CNN:
[Slain UNC student’s car found - CNN.com](http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/03/07/unc.student.killed/index.html)

I hope they find the killers and prosecute them to the max! My heart goes out to her friends and relatives.

Faline, this is hitting pretty close to home in many ways, isn’t it?

My impulse is to wrap DS in bubble wrap and put him into a large mayonnaise jar with holes poked in the top.

I know better, of course. And my heart aches for her family.

I do hope that the hosts of the Game tomorrow have a respectful way of acknowledging UNC’s loss.

I understand there will be a period of silence at Cameron tomorrow.

Bubble wrap and a mayonnaise jar sound pretty good to me…my d lives two blocks from where Eve’s car was found. It is so tempting just to not put her on that return flight home, but I know that can’t be. I still have faith in Chapel Hill and UNC and know my d will be fine in that wonderful little town.

Celebrate UNC, Duke connections

Many of you have heard news of the tragic death of Eve Carson, the student body president of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. We hear the shock and sadness felt by the members of our student body, and as a board, we have extended our condolences to the UNC community through their student newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel. We would like to ask all of you to join us in supporting those connected to the UNC community, some of whom are members of our own student body.

On Saturday evening, our basketball team will participate in one of the most storied rivalries in college basketball. We hope you will attend, we hope you will cheer and we hope you will do so with the energy and passion appropriate for the best event in college sports. We also hope that we as a student body will take the opportunity to celebrate the connections between Duke and UNC in a positive way, particularly in light of the hardship the UNC community is experiencing.

To that end, please join us for a moment of silence at the beginning of the game to honor Carson’s memory, and please keep the members of the UNC community in your thoughts and hearts.

yes, saw that westcoatmom…all good but somehow hope that the Duke students will find other ways to recognize what a horrific thing has happened to Chapel Hill’s community. Many Duke students have ties to Chapel Hill or are co-enrolled…
Her murder and the murder of Abhijit Mahato robbed the world of two forces for good and broke many hearts.
mafool, I know what you mean…

Faline2 - Yes, the Robertson Scholars program has both UNC and Duke students so those students spend time on both campuses and the Robertson bus runs daily between the two campuses.

Both schools are on Spring Break next week, which means the majority of the students will be leaving campus this weekend.

I hope the communities in the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Cary and Chapel Hill) will take action after the senseless murders of two university students - in Durham in January Abhijit Mahato from India and in Chapel Hill in March Eve Carson from Georgia.

An arrest was made in the case of Mahato and I hope that the police are working efficiently to find Eve’s murderer. The arrest in Mahato’s case was made during a routine traffic stop. UNC has donated $25,000 for a reward to CrimeStoppers for Eve’s case.

Regarding Eve’s case.

Word last night is the police have a photo of a possible suspect they are circulating. There will be a press conference sometime today.

[Police have photo of possible suspect - City](http://media.www.dailytarheel.com/media/storage/paper885/news/2008/03/07/City/Police.Have.Photo.Of.Possible.Suspect-3259569.shtml)

The picture CNN just aired looks like a hooded person standing next to Eve at an ATM. They also said that one of the 911 calls said that a woman’s screams were heard simultaneously with the gunshots.

**** edit****
They just aired the photos of the suspects- a direct view of the UNC suspect at the ATM, wearing a hat with a star on the front under the hood attempting to use Eve Carson’s ATM card (according to CNN), as well as a photo of the suspect arrested in Lauren Burk’s case

It appears they’re making progress in the Auburn case as well. Both of these murders are so tragic.

Yes maximus, Courtney Lurell Lockhart, age 23, was arrested and charged in Lauren’s murder.

This is so sad, and scary!!! :frowning: Why aren’t the police releasing the footage of the ATM suspect to the public? If they release it, someone is sure to recognize the suspect…

ATM photos are up…just google.
Devastating. How long was this daughter of UNC Chapel Hill alive and I suppose he got her pin numbers before executing her. We will see what the investigators piece together…

horrified Duke parent, still reeling from the murder of one of our students, and plenty of armed robberies.

[Police release photos of person of interest - News](http://media.www.dailytarheel.com/media/storage/paper885/news/2008/03/07/News/Police.Release.Photos.Of.Person.Of.Interest-3259600.shtml)

The way the roof line slants behind the driver in the pictures does not seem consistent with Highlander contour. Someone can identify that car for what it is…lots of detail…hope there is lots of physical evidence to link him to her and her car once they find him…would hate to see a “I found this wallet and used the ATM card” defense. Regardless, she will still be dead, but perhaps some other family’s child will be saved from this horrible person.

i don’t know, lorelei, I have two highlanders in our garage…this could be it, some distortion from primitive camera captures. the cops will be able to know for sure what the car is shortly…

Yeah- at first I thought the same thing about the roofline. But I think, considering the angle of the shot and the panoramic-type (?) view, it is likely the car. Try sitting at the left of your monitor and glancing towards the far right of the monitor. The angle changes a bit and you can see the roofline differently, seeing the middle (passengers) window in a slightly different perspective.

Well, I hope they catch this guy soon. I agree with Faline2 - I am still reeling from the murder of Abhijit Mahato as well as the numerous armed robberies around the Duke campus.

Unfortunately, college students are easy marks for criminals - they are targeted as they have cash or ATM cards to obtain cash, cell phones, iPods and computers - all of which can be pawned for cash.

I did not think about the curve of the mirror reflection, just saw how it slants down, looks more like a two door coupe from that perspective. But what do I know, squat, clearly??? I trust that someone who knows has made that call, and if it is a different car, I bet they have model, color, the whole bit. He can run but he will not be able to hide…that is too clear a picture of his sorry face.
