Colorado has a spring legislature, so the state budget won’t be voted on until May, and go into effect July 1. I’m sure they have a pretty good idea but nothing final. Take last year’s cost (and it does vary by major with more for engineering and music) and add to it.
OOS accepted applicant here, Question: how difficult is it to find off campus housing for three years? Do you stay in the same apartment for three years or move each school year? What is the approximate cost for off campus housing?
It is not difficult to find off campus housing as there is a lot of housing right near the campus (Greek houses, apartments, houses), but it is really expensive. I think most kids move every year. Most leases in Boulder go from Aug 15 to July 31, with those two weeks unoccupied to give landlords time for repair.
My nephew moved every year except maybe senior year/grad year in the same place. He lived on the Hill for two years (extremely expensive, in a garden level apartment with 4 other guys) and later found a house near the engineering building (great location for football).
A friend’s daughter shared an apartment one year but was able to find a very tiny apartment where she lived on her own for her senior year. She even got to have a cat.
Thank you. Can you elaborate on “really expensive”, trying to compare budgets across different options.
Well, my sister had me look at my nephew’s rental contract, and this would have been in 2015. There were 5 guys living in a house on the hill. The 11.5 month contract was something like $47K. Yes, forty seven thousand dollars! There was also a security deposit that I doubt they got 1/2 back (re-keying fee, cleaning fee, fee for this, fee for that). For an extra fee, they were allowed to pay monthly (but only one check for all 5 of them). All the parents got to sign the lease too. Rules about parking, rules about furniture on the porch (although I think that is a Boulder law).
That was on the Hill. I think there are cheaper places around campus andI think his second house was much much cheaper, but Boulder does have an ordinance that no more than 4 unrelated people can live together, so there are suddenly a lot of ‘brothers’ or ‘cousins’ living together… There was recently an attorney general’s investigation into one of the big rental management companies (a very big one, not just in Boulder but in Denver, Ft. Collins, Greeley) that was keeping security deposits illegally. They now have to give back millions of dollars.
There are definitely cheaper places to live than Boulder CO. One of my kids lived in Laramie WY and her rent, including utilities, was $400 (just moved in December). My other child lived in a really nice house in Melbourne FL for about $550/mo (that was in 2018).
Boulder is not cheap. But if your child gets any kind of job it will pay about $20/hr.
Anyone know the likelihood of being awarded more merit via the CU scholarship application process?
Has anyone gone on an Admitted Student Tour or the Buff Days Tour? I am trying to decide between these two options, thx
Holy moly, my dtr just got accepted! Deferred after EA, accepted today…this complicated things!
a great complication to have
congratulations!
Thank you ![]()
If it helps, my son is a freshman at CU Boulder and absolutely loves it. It’s far from home (we’re east coast) but he has embraced the mountain culture. He works hard (engineering) and plays hard. And it’s so beautiful there!! Congrats to those admitted.
My son was also admitted today after being deferred EA. 3.5, 1270, OOS, Multiple sports, solid # of AP/Honors. We visited in October 22’, may need to do the long trip back to CO for an admitted student’s event before deciding. Good luck to all.
Accepted after being deferred EA! Big surprise! 3.7, TO, OOS, Art undecided, EC’s in the Arts and Girl Scouts.
I’m in an Admitted student days right now, and so far it’s just very basic PowerPoint slides. There are hundreds of people here. It feels extremely different from the friendly, intimate admitted day at Mines yesterday. I’m in the PES presentation right now. Nothing so far you couldn’t learn in 15 min on the website.
Was he admitted into a specific college or PES?

Thank you!
My D24 was admitted early action in January with no aid. Today she got a letter that she got the chancellor scholarship $6250/yr, $25k total. I had written off merit aid a while ago. Although, I’m not sure it’s enough to compete with other schools aid and/or in state schools.
Same here … plus there are other scholarships in play still if your student applied for them! CU Boulder definitely still in play.
Yes S24 also just got an email with 25k total scholarship email also.
