University of Colorado Boulder Early Action for Fall 2024 Admissions

Is it also in the portal?

Yes. Follow the link in the same location as the admissions decision.

+1 for letter today with $6250/yr
I thought all the merit aid was in the EA decision letters, so immediately checked here to see if this was batched and it seems so

Edited to add:
applied to aerospace engineering, rejected but admitted to exploratory studies.
Unlikely to attend because he’s pretty set on that major, but I think it’s funny he still got merit aid. What a weird process.

Aren’t these awards just the results of sending in the scholarship application that was due a few months back? I figured they processed the scholarship applications, and these awards are the result … as opposed to merit aid awarded with acceptance.

I don’t think so because I’m pretty sure he didn’t apply to any

Same for my son (Mechanical Engineering). After getting placed into exploratory studies, Boulder went from his second favorite to maybe his last. Tried to change his major to undeclared engineering but they wouldn’t allow that. He was directly admitted to two other higher ranked ME programs. Very strange.

Does anyone know when engineering honors decisions will be released? Or, maybe they have been and my kid missed it?

Same with us… Our son is also debating whether to take a chance or go with other option.

I think you should ask the percentage of those in exploratory studies who complete all the required courses but are not admitted to engineering or can’t get into aero. My understanding is that if you pass the exploratory studies required courses, which are exactly the same as the engineering courses (same calc, same physics, same chemistry) you are guaranteed to be admitted into engineering.

I don’t know if you are guaranteed into a specialty like aero, but I will say my nephew was in MechE and works for an aerospace company. He could have taken aero classes, but didn’t. I do know that his freshman Calc class was in Chem 140, a classroom right by the UMC. He had 10 minutes to make it from engineering building to Chem 140 (can’t be done, said all of us old timers!) so in some ways being in Expl Studies might be physically easier for getting from class to class!

Former students told us that the you have to have a much higher GPA to transfer into engineering than engineering students need to maintain for the same classes.

It doesn’t sound at all like a sure thing and it gives the impression that exploratory studies is more of a polite rejection than anything else.

Here’s the line from their exploratory studies website ā€œWe help students who are unsure of what they want to do, decide on a path and help them explore their options.ā€

Another helpful part of their description on the exploratory studies page. The transfer should not be considered easy by any means.

How likely is a successful transfer to the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS)?

On average over the last few years, about 17% of students who initially applied to but were not directly admitted to engineering end up in CEAS. It’s important to note that engineering has a two-part set of requirements - a minimum grade of C (2.00) in prerequisite courses and also a technical GPA of at least 2.70 across those courses. Students with higher high school GPAs have had a higher success rate of transferring to engineering. For example, 57% of students with a 4.0 or higher high school GPA have transferred to engineering compared to 7% of students with a high school GPA below 3.0.

I think 17% is the acceptance in to the program (instead of direct admit). It is the estimated progression if you choose it. +50% if you were a 4.0 high school student and less than 10% if under 3.0 in high school. Not great.

Some good news (I think) for folks slotted into Exploratory Studies!

I sent a query to our admissions contact about leveraging Exploratory Studies into a spot in the College of Engineering (they also have information for transferring into the College of Business)

Here’s the summary for their IUT process for engineering here

This website breaks down what a student needs to transfer successfully. The process is NOT COMPETITIVE! They state that the classes required are not easy (Calculus 1 + Calculus 2 + Physics or Chemistry), but if all the requirements are met, the transfer into engineering will be automatic. Students can meet with their academic advisor to set up a path to follow (take certain classes, earn certain grades, and maintain a specific overall GPA) that will allow them to automatically transfer.

Here are the internal transfer success rates here. The percentages shown are NOT the odds of acceptance, but the percentage of students who actually complete the GPA and course requirements.

Attended a standard info session / tour yesterday since we couldn’t make it to the Admitted Students Day. CU did a great job with the tour. The info session was improved vs the one we attended in 2022 and I felt like we got a better feel for the campus this time too. Also stayed in downtown Boulder (Pearl St) to get the full experience. If you can’t get to the Admitted Students event, I recommend just doing a regular tour if you need that last visit to make a decision. Good luck to all!

The Black and Gold (spring football) game is April 27) It will be really wild that weekend. This used to be a casual event with free tickets, people brought their dogs, you went for an hour or so and then went to a bar. Nope. Now it is sold out, regular stadium rules apply, and they have Hollywood entertainment (I think it is Lil Wayne). It is the Prime effect. But prices at hotels will be higher that weekend, just like a fall football weekend.

That’s what we are hearing. Do you know how tough is the placement exam?

I don’t remember seeing anything about a placement exam, but I could have missed it.
